Embedding a forum into your OpenCMS website

OpenCMS is a powerful, open source content management system built on Java. It gives organizations full control over web content, templates, and publishing workflows, which makes it a solid fit for larger websites that need reliable structure and multi-user editing. OpenCMS does not include a native community forum or discussion feature.

That's where Website Toolbox comes in. You can embed a fully featured discussion forum directly into an OpenCMS page, or simply link to your forum from your site's navigation. Either way, you get user accounts, moderation tools, and real-time conversations.

This works really well for:

  • Member communities and membership sites
  • Customer support forums
  • Documentation and knowledge base discussions
  • Internal intranet and team discussions
  • Feedback and feature request boards
  • Education and training communities
  • Interest and hobby groups
  • SaaS product communities

This step-by-step guide walks you through the process.

Step-by-Step: Add Your Forum

Embed the Forum

  1. Log in to your OpenCMS Work Entrance (Workplace) with an account that has editing rights for the site.
  2. Open the site you want to edit and switch to the Sitemap editor or Page editor for the page where you want to add the forum.
  3. Get your Website Toolbox forum URL or embed code:
    1. Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
    2. Copy your forum URL. You'll need this for the linking approach.
    3. For the embedding approach, go to Integrate EmbedEmbed your forum, and copy the embed code.
  4. In the OpenCMS page editor, click Add content in the toolbar.
  5. Choose the HTML content element and add it to the page. (The exact label can vary with your template; look for an HTML or Content element that accepts raw HTML.)
  6. Open the HTML source of the element and paste your Website Toolbox embed code, then save the content.
  7. Click Publish to deploy your changes to the live site.
  8. Copy the URL of your published forum page.
  9. Configure the embed in Website Toolbox so the forum loads correctly in your embed container.

Link to the Forum

  1. Log in to your OpenCMS Work Entrance (Workplace) and open the site you want to edit.
  2. Open the Sitemap editor and create a new page (or select an existing page) to host the link to your forum.
  3. Get your Website Toolbox forum URL:
    1. Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
    2. Copy your forum URL.
  4. Add a link element pointing to your forum URL, and place it in your site's navigation or on the new page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OpenCMS have a built-in forum feature?

No, OpenCMS does not include a native forum feature. However, you can easily add a forum to your site using Website Toolbox, either by embedding it directly into a page or by linking to it from your navigation.

Should I embed the forum or link to it?

Both work well. Embedding keeps users on your OpenCMS site and integrates the forum seamlessly into your page layout. Linking is simpler to set up and opens the forum in its own page, which can be a better experience on mobile devices. Choose whichever fits your workflow.

Can I customize the look of my embedded forum?

Yes. Website Toolbox provides a theme editor with a variety of themes you can choose from to match your OpenCMS site's design. You can customize colors, fonts, layout settings, and more to create a seamless look.

Can I make the forum private or members-only?

Absolutely. You can restrict forum access to logged-in users, create invite-only communities, or charge for access with subscription plans. Your forum members will use the Website Toolbox login system to access the forum.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You add an HTML content element in the OpenCMS page editor and paste in the embed code from Website Toolbox. No coding knowledge is required to get your forum live.

Will the forum work on mobile devices?

Yes. Website Toolbox forums are fully responsive and work great on phones, tablets, and desktops. If you embed the forum, the iframe adapts to the container size automatically. Website Toolbox also offers a mobile app so your members can participate from their phones.
