Embedding a forum into your Moodle site

Moodle is a free, open-source learning management system (LMS) used by schools, universities, and training organizations to deliver courses, quizzes, and certifications online. Like most LMS platforms, Moodle does not include a built-in community forum for general discussion.

That's where Website Toolbox comes in. You can add a fully featured discussion forum directly into your Moodle site using a Text block, or simply link to your forum from your course menu or front page. Either way, you get user accounts, moderation tools, and real-time conversations for your learners.

This works really well for:

  • Online course communities
  • Student questions and answers
  • Cohort and study group discussions
  • Faculty and teacher collaboration
  • Training and employee onboarding groups
  • Alumni and continuing education networks

This step-by-step guide walks you through the process:

Step-by-Step: Add Your Forum

Embed the Forum

  1. Log in to your Moodle site as an administrator or a teacher with editing permissions.
  2. Open the page where you want to add the forum. This can be your site's front page or a course page.
  3. Turn editing on using the toggle at the top right of the page.
  4. Get your Website Toolbox embed code:
    1. Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
    2. Go to Integrate EmbedEmbed your forum and copy the embed code.
  5. In the block area on the right of your Moodle page, open the Add a block dropdown and choose Text. This is the block formerly known as the HTML block.
  6. In the new Text block, click the gear icon to open its settings, switch the editor to HTML source view, and paste your Website Toolbox embed code.
  7. Click Save changes to store the block. Your forum now appears directly inside your Moodle page.

Link to the Forum

  1. Log in to your Moodle site as an administrator or a teacher with editing permissions.
  2. Open the page where you want to add the link. This can be your site's front page or a course page.
  3. Turn editing on using the toggle at the top right of the page.
  4. Get your Website Toolbox forum URL:
    1. Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
    2. Copy your forum URL.
  5. Add a Text block (formerly the HTML block), paste your forum URL into the block, and make it a clickable link. Or add the URL to your course menu or front page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Moodle have a built-in forum feature?

Moodle includes a basic forum activity that is tied to individual courses and is limited in flexibility. It does not provide a standalone community forum with broad moderation, member management, or customization options. You can easily add a dedicated forum to your site using Website Toolbox, either by embedding it into a page or by linking to it from your navigation.

Should I embed the forum or link to it?

Both work well. Embedding keeps users on your Moodle site and integrates the forum seamlessly into your page layout. Linking is simpler to set up and opens the forum in its own page, which can be a better experience on mobile devices. Choose whichever fits your workflow.

Can I customize the look of my embedded forum?

Yes. Website Toolbox provides a theme editor with a variety of themes you can choose from to match your Moodle site's design. You can customize colors, fonts, layout settings, and more to create a seamless look.

Can I make the forum private or members-only?

Absolutely. You can restrict forum access to logged-in users, create invite-only communities, or charge for access with subscription plans. Combined with the SSO integration, you can connect your Moodle user system with the forum for a seamless login experience.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Adding the forum to Moodle only requires pasting your embed code or forum URL into a Text block, and your forum updates automatically based on your Website Toolbox settings. No programming skills are required.

Will the forum work on mobile devices?

Yes. Website Toolbox forums are fully responsive and work great on phones, tablets, and desktops. If you embed the forum, the iframe adapts to the container size automatically. Website Toolbox also offers a mobile app so your members can participate from their phones.
