Grav is a fast, flexible, open-source flat-file CMS that lets you build websites from simple Markdown files instead of a heavy database. It's popular with developers, documentation sites, and anyone who wants a lightweight site they can version and host anywhere. But like most CMS platforms, Grav doesn't include a built-in community forum or discussion feature.
That's where Website Toolbox comes in. You can embed a fully featured discussion forum directly into a Grav page, or simply link to your forum from your site's navigation. Either way, you get user accounts, moderation tools, and real-time conversations without writing any complex code.
This works really well for:
- Developer and tech communities
- Documentation and knowledge base sites
- Product support forums
- Open-source project communities
- Company intranets and member areas
- Corporate and portfolio sites
- Private member groups
This step-by-step guide walks you through the process:
Step-by-Step: Add Your Forum
Option A: Embed the Forum
- Visit getgrav.org and log in to your Grav admin panel. If you don't have a site yet, install the Grav CMS Skeleton package, which includes the Admin plugin so you can manage your site from a browser. The admin panel is typically available at yoursite.com/admin.
- From the Grav admin dashboard, click Pages in the left sidebar to open the page manager.
-
Get your Website Toolbox embed code:
- Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
- Go to Integrate Embed → Embed your forum and copy the embed code.
- In the page manager, click Add Page to create a new page for your forum, or open an existing page where you want the forum to appear.
- In the page editor, switch to the raw content view if your theme uses a visual editor. Paste the Website Toolbox embed code directly into the page content. Grav renders inline HTML, so the forum iframe will appear right where you placed it.
- If the forum iframe doesn't display, Grav 2.x blocks certain raw tags for security. Go to Configuration → Security and remove iframe from the Dangerous HTML Tags list under the Content XSS security settings, then save.
- Click Save and then Preview to confirm the forum displays correctly on your page.
- Copy the URL of your published Forum page from your browser.
- Configure the embed in Website Toolbox settings.
Option B: Link to the Forum
- Visit getgrav.org and log in to your Grav admin panel at yoursite.com/admin.
- From the dashboard, click Pages in the left sidebar.
-
Get your Website Toolbox forum URL:
- Log in to your Website Toolbox account or create a new forum if you don't already have one.
- Copy your forum URL.
- Open the page where you want to add the link, or click Add Page to create a new page.
- Add a link or button in the page content that points to your Website Toolbox forum URL. You can also add it to your site's navigation menu.
- Click Save and then Preview to make sure the link works.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Grav have a built-in forum feature?
No, Grav is a content management system and does not include a native forum. However, you can easily add a full-featured community forum to your Grav site using Website Toolbox, either by embedding it directly into a page or by linking to it from your navigation.
Should I embed the forum or link to it?
Both work well. Embedding keeps users on your Grav site and integrates the forum seamlessly into your page layout. Linking is simpler to set up and opens the forum in its own page, which can be a better experience on mobile devices. Choose whichever fits your workflow.
Can I customize the look of my embedded forum?
Yes. Website Toolbox provides a theme editor with a variety of themes you can choose from to match your Grav site's design. You can customize colors, fonts, layout settings, and more to create a seamless look.
Can I make the forum private or members-only?
Absolutely. You can restrict forum access to logged-in users, create invite-only communities, or charge for access with subscription plans. Combined with the SSO integration, you can seamlessly connect your Grav site's user system with the forum.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Grav uses Markdown for content, and the Admin plugin gives you a friendly web interface for creating pages. Adding the forum is just a matter of pasting your embed code or forum URL into a page. No programming experience is required.
Will the forum work on mobile devices?
Yes. Website Toolbox forums are fully responsive and work great on phones, tablets, and desktops. If you embed the forum, the iframe adapts to the container size automatically. Website Toolbox also offers a mobile app so your members can participate from their phones.
