Coney Island out of the hat doubles

Cesar Sala had a one day of the hat (1-wall small ball) doubles scheduled for the 4th. After trying to wait out the rain he decided to reschedule for the 5th (which is the date for the womens doubles).

Shortly afterwards the courts dried up so he decided to hold a $5/player out of the hat doubles to give those players still hanging around something to do. Every round the names of the winners went back into the hat and teams were redrawn and handicaps were given.

SEMIS - JOSH GARCIA/DAVE ROJAS DEFEATED ALBERT APUZZI/JOHN "BUTTER" MATILLA 25-24 WITH A GOOD PORTION OF THE MATCH BEING PLAYED DURING A SLIGHT DRIZZLE. THIS RESULTED IN QUITE A FEW DISPUTES OVER SKIDDING SERVES, PAULIE ANGEL/JOE KAPLAN DEFEATED ALLEN LEON/CESAR SALA 25-? AFTER RECEIVING A 3 POINT SPOT.

FINAL - PAULIE ANGEL/JOSH GARCIA DEFEATED JOE KAPLAN/DAVE ROJAS 25-24. THE KIDS WERE GIVEN A 10 POINT SPOT. KAPLAN AND ROJAS CAUGHT THEM AT 13 ALL AND BOTH TEAMS STOPPED SCORING AT AROUND 17 ALL. ANGEL WAS GOING FOR BROKE AND CRAZY SHOTS AT EVERY OPPORTUNTIY HE GOT. THE KIDS GOT UP ABOUT 6 TIMES AT 24. JOSH'S SISTER TOLD HIM THAT HIS MOM WAS GOING TO KILL HIM, FOR BEING LATE, WHEN HE GOT HOME. MAYBE THIS ACCOUNTED FOR GARCIA'S DECISION TO GO FOR A BIG SERVE AND ALL OR NOTHING SHOT (OFF THE RETURN OF SERVE) WHICH PAID OFF AS THE KIDS WON 25-24.

Everyone got two matches to 21. Full day of handball from 9 a.m to 10 p.m. 14 Open/A teams and 8 B/C teams, about all you can fit in on two courts if you give everyone two games.

30th Royal Flush Singles Entry

The Las Vegas Handball Club will be hosting the 30th Annual LV Royal Flush Singles August 15th-17th, 2008. Prize money for the Open is currently $400 1st and $200 for second. 2008 One Wall juniors summation

A bright torch lights the way.

Hosting the One Wall Junior Nationals has become a major undertaking and while I have always held that belief in my head four years ago it was not so daunting. Beginning with the thought process that juniors should be treated like adults I started my journey knowing full well it could end in ignominious disgrace or underwhelming adulation. I have learned much over the last four years and I have greatly strengthened my belief both in our game and the people who play it.

We now have a strong core of sponsors and helpers that can and will propel this event to greater heights. We have plans to expand and better the event and using the things we have learned we will succeed in these plans but most of all we will continue to make changes and take risks that may to some seem destined to fail. Life is about risk taking and this is just handball. If we fail it is back to the drawing board. The work never stops and when it is my turn to pass on the torch I will do so with the knowledge that I did my best to help the game grow and prosper.

I would like to thank our tournament sponsors, New York State Assembley Women Marge Markey, B.P.O Elks of Queensborough Lodge #878, The Maspeth Kiwanis, WPH and Maspeth Federal. Persons of Note, Vern Roberts for his work at the desk, Ron Flores for the same, Victor LoPierre for Running the Drop Down site by himself, Ken Davidoff for his help at the Desk and Tom Rudzewick for all the logistic Support. Also of note is the pleasant Parks Dept staff at Big Bush and the Guys from Rosas Pizza and 69^th street Distributors. Bob Hickman who saw the promise in me or maybe he just wanted to shut me up. Last but not least all of the kids who entered and their coaches and parents who helped them along the way. None of this is possible without the entire chain.

I will admit that I like to make records and do things that others have not, my ego is such that I try to compete in a passionate way without regards for personal animosity that may be gained along the way. I hope that people see this undertaking for what it is and that it the growth of handball. I have made a few mistakes in the last four years and I feel that I have learned from them. I know that I will make a few more mistakes that will come from a desire to do more and create better then what was before. We have done great things but there is so much more to do. So much more that can be done.

When we get panicked emails or phones calls from kids looking to know their start times or letting us know that they have doctors appointments or last minute school events it does cause a lot of extra work but I feel it is well worth it as the payout is happy faces and growing numbers. We say all the time that it is for the kids but in truth it is not. It is for the game and ourselves that we do these things because the kids were once us and they will be us soon again and it is our duty to show them the right way because that truly is the only way you can pass the torch. There was a movie a few years back called pay it forward and that is a good motto however mine is a little different. I am not giving back but rather helping it along. We are all part of a grand and long chain that carries the torch and Only a willing hand will grasp it after all.

i dont recall hearing about him at the junior nationals last december n he won the juniors 17-under singles at the nationals and barely lost the to the eventual champ in the 19's in a tiebreaker

If you are a Kansas or Missouri resident, the annual sunflower state games has added handball as a competitive event this year. At $25, it'll be the cheapest tournament you can play in, and you can compete in other events as well. The tournament is the weekend of July 26th, and the entry is due July 11th. Get to it!

Greetings,

I have a quick question that may seem odd. I am hosting a very small regional tournament in North Carolina and have received an entry form from a pair of Siamese Twins. These Siamese Twins are attempting to compete in a singles bracket- should this be allowed? If not should they be entered in the 60+ doubles bracket since they are each 32 years old?

I know a lot of you guys know your stuff, so any input is really appreciated. I do not want to have any disappointed players in our tournament.

Guinness Hurling Cubed

This is a new marketing campaign by Guinness. Basically, they set up a large perspex box in city centres and let anyone register to play a three minute game, with winners qualifying for the next round and a grand final played later in the year (on the weekend of the All Ireland senior hurling final when 82,000 fans will descend on Croke Park).

This could work for handball! Imagine the possibilities of getting a perspex court - for exhibitions in shopping centres, cities etc. And for big matches - the court could be set up on a basketball court, could be plastered in advertising like squash courts are, it would be ideal for TV too...

It's obviously fairly easy to construct because Guinness are moing it all around the country.

I don't know the dimensions but maybe the Irish Handball Council could buy this thing when Guinness are finished with it. They could run a similar competition even, with random people entering... The possibilities are endless with this thing.

How about a hands v hurley exhibition game even for now?

Hopefully the IHC will follow up on this. There is no message board on the Irish handball homepage now unfortunately...
