Running/Kickboxing Causing Pain

I have been running moderately for years. Lately, I've increased my workouts dramatically. I've been running 3-4 miles 4x a week. I've been doing this for about 1 1/2 months. After about 3 weeks of running daily, I began doing a kickboxing class 3x a week. After about a week and a half, I started having slight ankle and knee pain. The pain was felt only when running, because of the impact. I've continued to do the kickboxing class, but the pain when I go running is getting worse. The pain is now easier to identify- it's on the inside of each knee (if my knees touched, that's where the pain is). After some research online, I found out it could be my meniscus. I can walk fine, but running is painful. I've been bearing through it, and I get used to the pain, so I continue my run. Could I be doing more damage? My ankles have also been in pain- just generally around the joint. I don't want to stop my workout routine because I really like it. Can I still go running? I think the injury is from kickboxing- we do pivoting and kicks while balancing at weird angles- and it's very intense. What should I do to ensure I'm not causing permanent damage to my body? The pain is only when running, and slightly at kickboxing (but usually is worse the day after my kickboxing class). I've been hoping that my pain is just my body getting used to the new movements. I do not have any inflamation that I can see, but I've been taking tylenol once a day before exercise and elevating my legs for about 15 minutes a day. Thanks for any advice you can give me!
Melissa

Forum: Ask the Run Doc

I know this is cutting it close, but a few of my team members for the relay had to drop. One of the 5K's has been spoken for, but all other legs of the relay are available. The Sand Run leg is the 5K that is open. I am looking for two people either male or female to run. If anyone can do it please send me an e-mail to junroe@kent.edu.
Labor of Love Results

We had great VR representation at this year's 24th Annual Labor of Love Run at The Chapel in Downtown Akron. The race consisted of a competitive 5-miler, 1 mile fun run, and a 2-person relay in the 5-mile race. Lots of VR tech tees stood up to accept age group awards...congrats to all! Andrew Riggins captured 3rd overall running a 28:07, a 5:38pace. This year was a record-breaking year in terms of attendance (397 5mi finishers) and money collected for Akron Pregnancy Services, the primary beneficiary of the race. I'll also brag on my 5 and 7 year olds who completed their first race with me in the 1-miler...a great time!

Age Group Results

Overall Results

Photos (to name a few...Rich W.
Shin Issues

Hi Doc,

I have been running for years now and have started to get into the marathon running the last few years. I usually run 15 miles a week and have never had any problems for years. I have one marathon that I finished in 06 and I am training for the Marine Corps marathon this Oct 26th.

My question has to do with a shin issues that will not go away that started about one month ago. The pain is like a toothache. It is down the length of the shin but not in one spot. In the last week, my knee and ankle have started to hurt. I have rested for two weeks at the start of the problem and have started back slowly but the problem has returned. I have had a visit to an orthopedics Dr. and he took an x-ray of my shin and did not see a problem bone wise. The dr. said the shin/bone my still be an issue and he could do more tests but he told me to run off how it feels and to cut back if it hurts. I have increased my swimming and biking and have no pain issues when I do those. I walk with a limp at this point in time. Shin hurts to walk on hard concrete floors. I was wondering if anyone Dr. Wise could look at my stride mechanics and see if this is causing my problems. I have changed to new shoes and that has not helped the problem. The model that I normally run in is not made anymore. I am in the process of trying to find a new pair I like but this issue is making things hard. I was running on shoes that were overdue for a change which probably started this issue. I was up to 40 miles about 4 weeks back but just doing 20 miles at this point is getting to me. I am almost ready to throw in the towel and say maybe next year. I am in the Cleveland area so a visit to your office would not be out of the question.

Thanks for any advice,

Steve

Forum: Ask the Run Doc

One.....More.....Mile!

I had this idea and shared it with Vince a long time ago, but finally did something about starting a late fall into winter fitness challenge that will also raise a little money for charity. The basics are:

Starting Nov. 1st any entered runner (or walker) runs one mile. Each consecutive day you run an additional mile so that you do 2 miles on Nov. 2nd, and 3 miles on Nov. 3rd, etc. The entry fee is $20 per runner, ALL of which will go to two charities (one of which the last runner going gets to pick) and the rules are pretty simple, but will be held strictly. It IS an honor system on reporting you did the daily mileage, but you also HAVE to report it (email or blog post) by midnight each day, or you will be dropped. Each day's miles have to be run ON THAT DAY.

These miles can be run on tracks, roads, trails, treadmills, and are perfectly acceptable as part of a race. They have to be done consecutively (i.e. no 3 miles in the morning and 3 miles at night on day 6.) Since walking is allowed, there is NO speed limit, so ANYONE can do this.

I personally doubt anyone will make it much past 30 miles (think about the TIME spent each day as the limiting factor - that IS a challenge by the way Kurt) but am very excited to see what happens. Having just started it there are FOUR entrants (I am one of those) but I am going to post this on a few other boards and email lists to try to get some excited runners to join in.

The site to go to if you want all the nitty gritty details and maybe an entry form is:

http://www.1milechallenge.blogspot.com

Well, that is about all I can think of to say about it for now. Thanks for reading if you got this far!

Mike Keller
jetfuelburner@yahoo.com
330-338-5381

(feel free to email questions...or call if you like too.)

Forum: Local Races & Events

Feedback wanted: 100 miler training schedule

I'm addressing this to those of you who've completed one or more 100 milers.

Reference: August issue of Ultrarunning, page 30, Table 1: "Training"

Question: While looking at Table 1 on page 30 which outlines the 12 weeks prior to a 100-miler, do you feel this is adequate and a "good" schedule to follow to help best prepare for the distance? I know first-hand that no one knows what perils each will face on race day (weather/injury/etc.) but I've heard so much from those who train as little as 40-50 miles/wk to those in excess of 100 miles per week. As you will notice on this schedule, no run exceeds 28 miles but weekly mileage tops out at 70/71 miles 5 weeks prior to raceday, then begins a very slow decline until it's cut in half 2 weeks prior. Assume the long runs happen on similiar terrain to what the 100 miler will offer and planned nutrition is practiced.

Referencing also the paragraph on page 30 titled "Sample 1," the sample person described fits me to a tee as I average 40-50 miles/wk throughout the year regardless of whether I'm near an event or not and I train heavily on weekends on our beloved BT.

I tend to like this schedule because it is doable given my higher priority of family. My question is to you veterans...would you consider it adequate and a solid plan?

Thanks in advance,

Nick B.

Forum: Ultra Running
