ships store operator AWOL

The ships store operator (bum boat man) is over the hill again visiting the kids and grandkids in the DFW metromess, no orders will be received or filled again untill June 10th.

After the USS Cole incident, and the war on terror, obviously the bumboats are a thing of the past, unlike the days we spent in Tangiers when the bumboats were trading anything you could put in a bucket and lower down to them, I remember when one of the bumboaters cheated Old I.W. Cooper and he was so mad he grabbed a battle lantern off the bulkhead and tossed it through the bottom of the bumboat, and I can still see that raghead trying to row away and keep the hole in his boat filled with rugs, while still ranting at us lining the rail.

Well this time the bumboat is not going to such drastic measures but will be laid up for a well earned vacation and to catch a few
Texas Ranger games when they get back in town.

Since I will probably overstay my leave just have a report chit waiting for me on the quarterdeck, their should be some already typed with my name on them in the quartermasters log.

Hope all of you had a nice Memorial Day holiday

Members receiving the Vietnam Service Medal are authorized to wear a bronze star to indicate each campaign. There are 17 designated campaigns during the period of 15 March 1962 through 28 January 1973. Units which receive campaign credit for any of the campaigns would display a streamer with inscription as shown on the unit's lineage and honors. The designated campaigns are:

Vietnam Advisory 1962-1965
Vietnam Defense 1965
Vietnam Counteroffensive 1965-1966
Vietnam Phase II 1966 - 1967
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase III 1967-1968
Tet Counteroffensive 1968
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase IV 1968
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase V 1968
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase VI 1968-1969
Tet 69 Counteroffensive 1969
Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969
Vietnam Winter-Spring 1970
Sanctuary Counteroffensive 1970
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase VII 1970-1971
Consolidation I 1971
Consolidation II 1971-1972
Vietnam Cease-Fire 1972-1973

Joint Re-Union with the Edmonds

 Shipmates,

Sounds like from the e-mail's and forwarding e-mails that a Joint Re-Union with the Edmond's is not a good idea. Charles has noted that some of the shipmates from the Edmond's don't want to have a Reunion in Seattle. And I agree with Bill Deibel, we should consider the USS Prevail, USS Sheldrake, USS San Pablo, USS Serrano. We have proposed this to the USS Tanner but haven't received any reply as yet.

If we were to have a joint Re-Union with the Edmond's, then we would most likely require separate banquet rooms and was mentioned, different name tags.

Shipmates, we really need some input from you on this one. What do you think? Send me your thoughts on having a joint Re-Union with the Edmond's and I will forward them to Charles Howe and we will go from there.

The Newsletter will contain the dates and hotel information on when the 2009 Re-Union will take place, hopefully it will be out this week.

Terry
Name of Island North of Kwajalein Atoll

Shipmates,

I have a request from MM3 Bill Zylstra.

In late 1966 we went to the Kwajalein Atol. At some point a day or two later we setup a tri-anhgulations base on "one" of the other islands to the North of Kwajalein. Does anyone remeber the name of the "other island" where the base camp was? I remember a Japanese Zero still on the beach and finding many live 20MM rounds or shells washing up on the coral.

You can contact him: wrzylstra@aol.com

Thanks,

Terry
Shipmates,

Just recieved an E-mail from Tom Lawson who I believe served aboard the USS Tanner AGS-15. He created a small Web Site for the Tanner and you can visit it @ http://cboats1.tripod.com/usstanner. I am going to link it to the Military Links on Maury's Web Site. He taken some pretty interesting photo's which I would like to add to Tanners Page on our Web Site. Also for you CT'S another Tanner shipmate William Lockhart has added some photo's as well.

Check it out........

Terry
Many Navy veterans who served off the coast of Vietnam, so-called "blue water" veterans, have health problems commonly related to herbicide exposure, but have endured lengthy legal struggles to prove these problems are service-related.

They were recently dealt another legal blow when the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a decision in the Haas v. Peake "blue water" case. This ruling reversed a Veterans Court of Appeals decision which had previously ruled in favor of Jonathan Haas, a blue water veteran. The US Court of Appeals ruled that the VA's definition of "service in the Republic of Vietnam" (which includes those who set foot in, served on inland waterways or put into port in Vietnam) should remain the standard for proving exposure. This definition, used by VA for more than a decade, excludes Navy veterans who served off the coast of Vietnam.

FRA again addressed this issue in its testimony before the House and Senate VA Committees in April, and clearly stated the Association's opposition to legislation and legal efforts to reverse the original ruling. Based on this most recent action, Vietnam vets must again show they set foot in country, their ship operated within Vietnam's inland waterways or put into port in Vietnam in order to prove exposure to Agent Orange or other toxic herbicides.

Those interested in reading the Haas v. Peake decision can find it at: (www.cafc.uscourts.gov/opinions/07-7037.pdf)

Reunion in SanDiego,CA

It is time for USS Maury AGS16 Association to have a reunion in California after all we have a lot of members that live in California that cannot afford the cost of a trip out of state. SanDiego would be a great place to have or 2013 reunion. The Naval base has tours of Ships,Air shows and museums to see and a lot more.SanDiego is city that is made for a Navy type group like ares to have a reunion. Also we could have a day trip to Mexico.
I will be receiving from the SanDiego chamber of commerce and the SanDiego visitors burrow soon. I will review it and then drive down and meet the staff of the two groups I have named. Then I will report to the membership.

God Bless You John F. Michler:
