Help with GGP muting switch

I completed assembling my new GGP kit except for the muting circuit. I'm having trouble seeing how the components (two resistors, cap, and three wires) hook to the terminal strip from the picture supplied with the kit.

Can anyone help me with this? I don't know enough about electronics to figure this out on my own.

I've been running the unit without the muting circuit for almost two weeks and really like it.

Thanks,
Doug
Using "The Beast" on special active ribbon speaker section?

Hello everyone,

i would like to know if i can use 4x "The Beast" on my active ribbon speaker. The Beast would drive a 89db efficent and 5ohm midrange ribbon and a 4.7ohm (dont know the efficency) woofer midbass ribbon. 2 amps would play 70Hz to 250Hz only and the other 2 amps would drive 250Hz to 9KHz midrange ribbon. The system is 4 way and fully active. I love OTL amps and because they have no DC output i wont have to worry about the DC Offset destroying my ribbon.

Thanks for the info

Florian

Blocking Cap Mod

Hi,

Finished building the kit a couple days ago and listening to MUSIC through my Oris Horns. Sounds great!
Together with the GG and the Balanced Power Supply, it looks nicely matched too.

Just a question, would using low ESR caps eg Nichicon muse etc on the output give any sonic improvements? Anyone done that?

T16 Bias Adjustment

I've just built a pair of mono bloc T16's. One is functioning perfectly but the other I cant get the bias Voltage to Zero Volts. With the pot wound fully clockwise the lowest reading I have managed to obtain after swapping pairs of tubes from back to front is 0.15 V on the 2 Volt scale of my tester (it has no millivolt setting). Any suggestions as to what to look at? I'm considering swapping the sets of tubes between the two Amps but doubt that this is the problem.

Eliminating preamp entirely?

I'm thinking of getting the T16 kit to use with 16-ohm Feastrex fullrange field coil drivers . . .

. . . and I was wondering if anyone has experience driving their T16 or other OTL amplifier more or less directly from the output of a CDP/DAC. (It is understood that at minimum at least some sort of a volume control is needed.)

I would probably use a DAC like this one:

http://www.lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/LAMPUCERA/LAMPUCERA%20DAC/Lampucera_boxed.html

That takes the output from the DAC chip, bypasses all op-amps and puts the signal through the tube buffer shown, and then out. Different amounts of gain can be realized at that point, of course.

What sort of input signal characteristics make the T16 happiest, and (assuming only digital sources) is it easy to keep the T16 happy without a GG or other preamp?

Many thanks,

Chris Witmer
Tokyo

GG- weak right channel

OK, so I got my new grounded grid kit last week, spent 4 or so hours soldering it all together, and after finding 1 bad solder joint it has worked nicely for a week or more. Now today I noticed hissing on the right channel (some, but less on the left), and much weaker output than the left channel. I happened to have a spare volume control laying around, swapped it out and no change (I changed the control because the original was a bit noisy). It doesn't matter what the source is or if there is a signal. Also tried a different amplifier to remove the st-70 as the culprit. All the solder points now look solid, clean and shiny. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Step up transformers...

Hi everyone, just curious on the opinions here regarding step-up transformers and MC carts...

As the Transcendent Phono Stage requires a step-up transformer to run low output MC carts, and with the general OTL philosophy here, I was wondering from a more practical and technical point-of-view (rather than an audiophile one) whether a dual gain stage or a step-up transformer would be the preferred route for LOMC.

Does adding another transformer to the signal path just colour the sound, add a "veil", or restrict the bandwidth?

Is LOMC even *really* worth the effort over MM or HOMC? Is LOMC just part of the flea-watt SET obsession?

Is an MM/HOMC through a simple Phono Stage *technically* more pure and uncoloured? (Which would seem to fit with the TS philosophy and the current Phono Stage...)

Just throwing a few questions out there...

Taz. :)
T16 vs Beast question...

Hi all!

Just a quick question regarding the T16 vs the Beast...

I've got 91dB sensitive 3-way speakers and I listen at pretty reasonable levels in a smallish room. I assume the T16 stereo would be adequate (although if anyone thinks I *really* need more power let me know!)

My main question is... Is there a significant difference between the T16 vs Beast in regards to quality / resolution / tone? Obviously there is a significant difference in power and therefore headroom and dynamics... But is the overall sound similar between the two?

I ask because I suspect that the Beast may be overkill, and if I got one, I would be unnecessarily spending more on re-tubing for power I don't need. Whereas the T16 has much cheaper tubes, and a nice upgrade path by buying a second one at a later stage and converting to monoblocks.

Thanks for your time!

Taz.

Hi, I purchased and built this kit some time ago. I recently moved and now cannot find the documentation for it. I removed the tubes from all my projects for transport and now I don't know which tubes go in which sockets on this power supply. The documentation also showed hook ups for different voltages. Any chance of getting the docs for this emailed to me?

Thanks and Aloha!
Stephen Geiger
