Communications

Learning Objective:

Experience in a fast-paced, strategic and creative communications team.
Participate in the development of national and local communications campaigns.
Create writing samples, and/or other project samples based on interest and availability.

Projects:

Assist the local communications department on a variety of projects that may include marketing, media and web site research; writing, editing and fact checking; events preparation and coordination; and data compilation.

Qualifications:

At least one year of college with a preferred major in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English or Marketing. Office experience preferred.
Interest in television, radio and/or public broadcasting.
Familiarity with programs produced by WETA and those that air on TV 26 and Classical WETA 90.9 FM.
Desirable skills and experience include: writing, editing, research and event coordination.

Learning Media

Learning Objective:

Experience with coding language and various systems.
Experience with managing, marketing, and researching inventory for an online revenue source.
Customer service skills.
Knowledge of reading and the issues that face struggling readers.
Experience working with an International multi-media literacy project.

Projects:

Coding and proofing various materials for 3 major educational websites.
Logging and reviewing footage for PBS television program.
Managing inventory and aiding in marketing for online store.
Writing and summarizing material for the Web.
Researching various topics utilizing the Web.
Various other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

One year of college with a preferred major in English or Marketing.
Comfort with HTML; other coding languages helpful, but not required.
Familiarity with the Web and how to use it for research purposes.
Interest in marketing, experience preferred.
Comfort with editing and proofreading various written materials.
Customer service experience.
Ability to write clearly and concisely, following standard grammatical rules.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, and in an atmosphere of multiple projects.
Spanish skills a plus.

Learning Media (LD Online)

Learning Objective:

Improved writing skills.
Knowledge of education policy.
Knowledge of how to organize material for the Web.
Knowledge of learning disabilities.
The opportunity to produce Web material that can be used in a portfolio.

Projects:

Reviewing articles and organizing them into categories.
Making recommendations as to which articles will go on the Web.
Copy editing material for punctuation and grammar.
Abstracting articles.

Qualifications:

Three years of college with a preferred major in Education or Special Education.
Knowledge of learning disabilities and special education.
Basic knowledge of education theory and practice.
Ability to code articles and use HTML.
Proven ability to write clear and grammatical prose.
Excellent reading comprehension.
Proficient in office productivity software.

Learning Media (Web Team)

Learning Objective:

Experience with the daily maintenance of a website.
Experience with various coding languages.
Experience using a content management system.
Experience using an e-customer database management system and managing bulk email mailing lists.
Experience working in a professional environment.

Projects:

Assist with HTML coding and web production.
Help maintain the websites, update content and web pages.
Assist with podcast development and distribution.
Assist with electronic newsletter production.
Assist with forums management.
Update graphics and assist in implementation of new graphic design.
Answer customer emails.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

One year of college.
Strong technical skills, including ability to code using strict XHTML standards.
Familiarity and aptitude in using a content management system.
Basic PhotoShop skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, and in an atmosphere of multiple projects.
Writing and proofreading skills highly desired.
Ability to communicate is a definite plus.

Major Giving

Learning Objective

Experience in a multi-faceted media company, fundraising, donor/prospect research and event planning.

Projects:

Conduct current donor and prospect research utilizing LexisNexis and other online resources.
Support major giving staff.
Assist staff with event planning and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Two years of college with a preferred major in Communications, Journalism, or Political Science.
Proficient in office productivity software. Experience working with databases preferred. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities to complete projects in an accurate and timely manner.

National Programming

Learning Objective

Broader understanding of media requirements of broadcast medium.
Gain comprehensive knowledge on how to write proposals for public television.
Develop research skills.

Projects:

Assist in researching and developing proposals for national programming.
Assemble research in a meaning layout using office productivity software, administrative tasks (securing internal and external meetings/conference calls and organizing files)

Qualifications:

College student or recent college graduate with preferred major in Broadcast Media. Journalism, or Communications.
Basic understanding of television broadcast operation.
Excellent writing, analytical and organizational skills.
Proficient in office productivity software.
Attention to detail.
Ability to research and compile data in a timely fashion.

WETA Television (Production & Creative Services

Learning Objectives:

Program research and development, production scheduling, studio and location shooting, script-writing, and post-production techniques.

Projects:

Assist producers in all aspects of pre-production, production and post-production.

Qualifications:

Two years of college with a preferred major in Communications.
Knowledge of television production techniques such as editing and shooting are helpful but not necessary.
Good office computer skills, internet searching skills, communication skills.

Job Summary

Manages all IT functions and personnel for assigned office. 5. Provides high level technical input, support and works with IT team to design, implement, install, integrate, enhance and document in-house technology for maximum Firm-wide productivity.

6. Ensures that office systems are operational at all times and works continuously to resolve any major system outages or malfunctions to ensure maximum system availability for users. Updates users and all appropriate parties regarding status of system malfunction and resolution.

7. Develops and maintains current knowledge of trends and developments having an impact upon area operations. Analyzes and evaluates present and future technologies and trends within area of responsibility to provide creative yet realistic input for the Firm's long-range technology plans. Continually strives to identify ways to improve service offerings and the delivery of service through process improvements to meet the constantly evolving needs of the Firm.

8. Assumes responsibility for maintaining the highest level of confidentiality of all firm records and files.

9. Participates in departmental project teams and task forces designed to streamline workflow and/or resolve issues; assists with various firm and/or departmental projects and initiatives as assigned.

I am a parent of a TJ senior, who has been offered a full scholarship to U of Okla, because he is a National Merit Finalist. We know nothing about this school except for what's on their website. Do any of you alumni know anything about it? My son wants to major in computer sciences. He's applied to MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, UVa, and VaTech, but of course we don't know the results yet. Financing is a big consideration for us. It seems too good to be true to get a "free ride." We may go visit, but is it worth considering at all?

Return of Video Lab

TJ Alumni,

Earlier this month I received the final word from the TJ administration that the Video Lab would be reinstated. After two years of discussion and an attempt to run the video classes as electives, the decision was made to bring it back. The lab name will change from Video Technology and Communications to Communication Systems. I agree with this change since video has evolved so much in recent years. There will be more opportunity to investigate signal compression and how it can be used in streaming information in areas like vodcasting and the use of flashand other evolving software. Students have already discussed the possibility of using the video lab in collaboration with the foreign language classes to prepare material for schools in Germany and other countries.

I have always thought that a significant amount of study, engineering application, and research was part of the Video Technology Lab. The things students did prepared them for careers as well as assisting them in other classes when in college. In my view, Video Tech was always a step above what most students were doing at the high school level in other schools.

I was probably the last to know of the alumni support for the reinstatement of the lab. Numerous letters were sent to the principal and school board. Several students took time to meet with the principal regarding this issue. I recently learned that over 300 signatures were on a petition on Facebook requesting the lab status of the class be reinstated. I appreciate your support in this endeavor. I addition, all of the tech lab directors and a large number of the TJ faculty requested the lab be reinstated.

As I write this, 42 students have chosen the Communications System Lab as their first choice for their senior tech experience. Two expressed an interest in mentorship. It will be an interesting year because some of these students will not have the elective training to support them. They will have to spend at least the first grading period learning the basics of video.

Thanks again for your support. It has been a rough two years for me, and in some ways I kind of feel like George Bailey in Its A Wonderful Life. Just when I thought there was not future for me at TJ, all of this support flowed in! I humbly thank you and wish you all the best for 2008.

What can we do to capitalize on TJ's recent #1 Ranking

So, TJ has been receiving quite a bit of buzz lately in regards to its #1 US News ranking. So now what? How do we capitilize on this buzz to help TJ raise the money it deserves? TJ cannot continue to produce the country's top grads without the vital resources that it so desparately needs to fulfill the learning initiatives of its students. Many people (taxpayers) and politicians in the county think that TJ should not receive any special treatment from public sources because they do not want to favor gifted students versus regular students. However, their actions directly contradict these statements when they brag about how great TJ is, its #1 ranking and so on an so forth. They use TJ as a poster for their success as educators, administrators and politicians, but when it comes to helping TJ succeed (by giving it proper funding), they turn the other way. So what can we do? I'm interested in hearing from the alumni on this important issue.
