I was wondering if anyone out there has this problem. I run through my small town alot and pretty much see my whole town drive by while I run. Every senior has to tell me I'm ruining my joints, I'll need knee replacements one day. I had one lady literally stop me the other day while running and tell me I'm ruining my breast tissue. PLEASE, having three kids does that not running. I mean who does that, stop somebody they don't know and talk about their body parts. I almost told her that is what implants were for. I don't know it just rubs me the wrong way. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Forum: General Forum

Nashville Urban Greenway Ultra

http://www.nashvilleultra.com

Anybody know anything about this?

October 18. There have been no local announcements that I know. It is kinda like a stealth ultra, and the website does not say much.

The website states:

There will be a 50K, 60K, 70K and 80K. The course is about 80% paved and 20% grass trails. Of the paved portion, 90% are trails that are part of the downtown Nashville Greenways system. The other 10% is a bike trail along Davidson Street in East Nashville.

Looking at the maps, it appears to include the Gay Street connector up to Metro Center Greenway, but I thought this section was not built yet.

Anybody, anything?
Forum: General Forum

Anything like this happen to you?

Well I posted about my race this past weekend. Wanted to mention how it went and if I took something the wrong way.

I always arrive at the races by myself and usually dont know anyone. I saw this gentleman who was decked out in all the fancy running gear which was pretty cool. At the starting line, He comes up to me and says, What are you going to run it in? said, I dont know, probably 21 minutes. He said Ill beat that. You look like a runner and I thought if you were going to run it in 15 minutes or something I was not going to try and take it easy. He said, Ill run it in the high 18s, maybe low 19s.

So we take off, He is 2nd, I am about 5th. At the 2 mile mark he is first, I am 2nd. At about 2.75 miles there was an uphill section and I get within 30 feet of him. Then it goes downhill and he speeds up to the finish. He beat me by 9 seconds.

So afterwards he comes to me and says that he thought I was going to catch him in the uphill section but that he was a good downhill runner and that helped him at the finish. He said he intentionally at the end tried to run faster, trying to use some psychology on me to discourage me from chasing him.

At the awards ceremony, they announced he had ran Boston a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I thought it a little strange. It was a really really small event, but I guess people are competitive no matter where it is probably including me. I dont know if I would have told someone I was trying to use psychology on them even If I was though. Anyway, has anyone else experienced anything like that?

Forum: General Forum

I am so excited I could burst, so I need to spread the news! As runners, I'm sure all of you appreciate the health benefits of your livelihood. I have been studying exercise physiology since I was a teenager and have always appreciated the healthy returns of my favorite passtime. A few months ago I was asked by the American College of Sports Medicine to push our most recent initiative, signifying May, 2008, as "National Exercise Is Medicine Month". This initiative encourages all physicians and healthcare providers to talk to their patients about the health benefits of physical activity, and to lay off the pills a bit and write exercise prescriptions to treat or prevent chronic health conditions. Here's where the good news comes in...

I am holding a proclamation from Governor Bredesen in my hand (**screaming with giddy excitement**)... As proclaimed by the Governor of Tennessee, May is forever more Exercise Is Medicine Month!!!!

Forum: General Forum

I have read that if you get 2 pair of shoes and rotate them day to day, letting them have time to get their full flexibility back before you run in them again will give you more miles on each pair. Does anybody know anything about this?

Forum: Injuries and Prevention

My daughter

I just wanted to mention my daughter ran a kids fun run this past weekend. SHe is 8 years old. For whatever reason they paired the boys and girls up and they ran togther. To make a long story short she got 2nd in her age group both against boys and girls! The best part is I got to run with her. At about the 1/4 mile mark she kept saying "dad, dad I'm in 3rd place" I kept having to calm her down and tell her there was stil 3/4 a mile to go.

ANyway, it was a neat experience. I am thinking of running at Portland but I dont think I will do very well as there are alot more people and it seems alot more competitive, but I am going to try to get her to do the kids fun run up there.

Do any of you have kids that run? Any advice on getting them started out and keeping their interest in the sport?

Forum: General Forum

I was thinking about this as my 2nd marathon, it gives me plenty of time to build up a larger base and do a nice plan. I ran the half a few years ago and remember some hills. What do you guys think of this course. How is it compared to CMM? I really want to cut some time off. I did a 4:45 and would like to get ALOT closer to 4hrs. This is semi-local so it is the easiest thing to get too, and I can get a fairly cheap room.

Forum: Area Races
