First ski

Scott and I were a bit skeptical, but after reading the trail conditions report on the CC Ski Association of Manitoba site, we decided to head out to Bird's Hill Park to check out whether or not we could get a decent ski in. To our surprise, there really was a good track along the road. Weather conditions were perfect, and we headed off.

I had a bit of a disappointing start - almost immediately my arms were tired and it felt like my gripwax was nonexistent, but we realized in short order that we must've started on a bit of a false flat as things sorted themselves out quite quickly after that. We just did one (5K) loop - apparently skiing uses different muscles than cycling or running and my legs were starting to ache by the time we made it through one circuit of the loop road.

The ski was awesome and it felt great to get back out in the snow!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Fruita Mtb video - training motivation surprise

Surprise Surprise ... I was on the bike trainer yesterday and selected one of my downloaded mtb trail helmetcam videos that I used last winter to pass the boring time on the trainer (hey Santa - sure would be nice to be able to make my own !) ... it was one of MoutainBikeBill's videos from the Kokopelli Trails at Fruita, Colorado ... cool enough ...

I uploaded a portion of the video here.

but ... after missing the movie title slides while adjusting trainer tension, I settled into pedalling and enjoying the scenery ... that's when it struck me ...
I recognize these trails
... son-of-a-"gun" if that's not the same trails that Brian Dyck and I road in Fruita on the way back from our Moab trip this past spring ... very cool ... I had no idea that one of my favorite trainer videos from last winter would end up being where we would be riding in the spring (our stopover in Fruita was a last minute trip add-on)!

The scenery and riding on the Kokopelli trails in Fruita is awesome!

One of my favourite pics from our trip south (thanks to Brian's camera eye) was from riding that day in Fruita !

Suddenly, I am re-motivated to find more good videos and push it on the trainer!
Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Olympia may order a few of these, and they are of course always available as a special order. I think the wide-lense version (the one recommended for sport shots but not pictured here) is about $220:

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

I don't know if I'm the only one (I doubt it) but when I'm eating 'well' I'm usually also having food-related dreams. Usually my food dreams are of foods I shouldn't be having. Case in point: Last week I dreamt that my mother gave me 4 family-sized chocolate bars to eat. I dreamt that as I was leaving her place I ended up aimlessly wondering the streets, promising myself that I would only eat one square of the coveted chocolate I was holding in my hands. Of course one square led to 'just one more' until I looked down and saw that I had only one square left - I had consumed the rest already. In disgust I threw the last square away and (for some unknown reason) returned to my parents' place, where my mom was waiting to offer me a piece of pie. Now I don't think I'm as tormented as the dream might indicate, but still...

A funny thing happened last night though. Instead of dreaming of foods I shouldn't eat I dreamt of being at Wendy's, ordering a grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo and a side of salad with no dressing (yes the dream was that detailed) and then noticed that for just $0.59 more I could get the chicken sandwich with a whole wheat bun instead of white, and I was excited.

Does this mean that I've turned a nutritional corner? Does it mean I live a sad, slightly disturbed life? Or both?

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Grudge Cross Photo Dump

So Grudge Cross time arrived ...

the riders showed (must with slick tires - unlike me on my standard cross tires ... what can I say, no slicks ) ...

Tomek and Scott had prepped the course to slippage perfection ...

and they were off ... reigning champ Dave D racing off to the early lead (ok, he left most of us in his dust ... I mean snow!) ...

Tomek was lurking somewhere behind (and way ahead of me!) ...

Jonny G and Hal were slipping away just ahead of me ...

my added traction eventually gave me the edge to cruise past them, but that gain was very hollow ...

here's Susan A pressing through the snow ...

sometimes it's better to just run for it ...

and pick your place to rejoin the fight ...

or just use fat tires ...

Dave schooling the rest of us and retaining his champ status ...

Luc A in hot pursuit ...

here's Paddy H ripping in his new MUCR bodysuit (great to see Paddy and Naomi back in town !) ...

everyone was working on their own grudge ...

getting lapped by Dave (right at the start/finish area of course!) ...

funny how most of the pics that Lori took with Paddy and Luc in them have some pink edging ...

Dave L on his grudge cross quest ...

Paddy giving it his all to finish ahead of Luc ...

which he just did ... the start of a new grudge!???? target=_blank target=_blank>Bourkevale CX Race was another huge success even though "Old Man Winter" set in just a few days prior to the race! It was really impressive to see so many racers (35-ish) show up on a cold day after so much snow and ice had recently accumulated.

Thanks to overall coordination by Scott and Deanna, preparation of chili and fixings (Rhonda and Lori) and race course marking and shoveling by (Scott, Deanna and Graham, plus help from Scot Miller - thanks for pitching in Scot) and Greg Keeler and his "<A href="http://www.thesleuths.com/The%20Bottle%20Rockets.html"
Tomek has just distributed a poster (below) for the unsanctioned Grudge Cross, coming up the week after Bourkevale. This is the annual event that bridges the official cx season with the unofficial Nordic Cross, and always proves to be fun. Tomek is in charge, but I imagine there will be hot coco or something back at our house afterwards seeing as we live pretty much on the course.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

CX Provincials - Wildwood

I didnt get out to this years earlier race at Wildwood but I really enjoyed last year so I was pretty stoked about riding there again. The weather was perfect. Seema and I were the only two in our category and I knew there was no way I could stay with any of the other women so I decided to race my category only and ignore everyone else. I followed Seema for the first couple of laps, then made my move and stayed in front for the rest of the race. I felt really strong and even though I was pushing it felt good. My kind of course I guess.

I realize I didnt ever post about Altona. This race went pretty much the opposite of Wildwood. Heres a brief summary:

Lap 1 oh crap tried to do that way too fast (for me - it was still actually quite slow)

Lap 3 why why why why why

Lap 4 delirium

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Well I've been feeling good about my strength training workouts these last 3 months (I have 2 weeks left in a 12 week cycle that has been really hard but has produced some real results, and I'm patting myself on the back for not having missed 1 workout in the past 10 weeks), but...

I've been in class the last 4 days taking a personal fitness training course, sitting beside a classmate who 'leans out' to 248 lbs (his top weight goal is 285). He's 6'0" tall. He's about 260 lbs right now and looks like he's got maybe 8% body fat. In other words, he's huge.

Let's put his strength in perspective: I haven't done a max effort bench press in years, but if I estimate using my high rep/set dumb bell press weight (65 lbs per dumb bell) my hope is that my max single rep bar bell press would come in a little over 200 lbs (based on some charts and calculations I won't bother with getting into here). That's not bad for a guy like me, who currently weighs in at 165 lbs. But here's the thing: My classmate should be able to, according to calculations and what he was pressing when we went to the gym together yesterday afternoon, press the 200 lbs that I can press PLUS my own weight of 165. That's right, he could press me and the bar I'm pressing at the same time.

I'm just happy we got along. Sorry, I have no pics. I actually had a camera with me and wanted to take a couple shots of him in action, but I thought that would come across as a bit weird.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Menno Cross 3: "feelin the burn" from the sidelines

Well, I just got back in town after almost six weeks away and I am nursing a nasty cold that has settled into bronchitis, so I figured my bike racing year (what there was of it) was over ... then I got a call from Deanna to let me know about the Menno Cross race going down today at CMU. So I geared up my bike and extra weather gear for a ride over to CMU to check out the race, snap some pics and soak up the racing vibes again.

Here's a link to a slideshow of my pics Mennocross 08 Slideshow
Here's a link to a grid of the pics Mennocross 08 Grid

Here's some of the happy few who risked the poor weather forecast and enjoyed some menno "suffering"!

Deanna was right there helping register and track the racers ...

First a quick warm up lap led by Hal "Mr Menno Cross" Loewen on his sweet new Truelove

Then a Le Mans start of course ... who was that shifting all the bikes around anyways?!

The post start cluster of riders ...

Tomek in the early lead ...

Dallas "Hey anyone got a long alan-key?" S. getting it cranked up ...

Once the rain and hail kicked in not even the elites were cleaning it up this little hill ...

And soon enough the rain and hail arrived as forecasted ...

Adrian H. grinding through the hail ...

The little guy's perseverance was great to see ...

and he brought it home ... followed by his suitably impressed dad!

The end to the "suffering" and Menno Cross #3 ... next year I hope to race!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Altona race report from the sidelines

Well, once again affirming my unexplained reluctance (actually it's more apathy than reluctance) to saddle up for a race this season I was content to watch others race in Altona this weekend. That didn't mean I couldn't have my own little 'bike' ride though; I took my first hwy trip on my newest motorcycle (yes, I traded in my spring purchase about a month ago for a more powerful, fuel injected, triple disc brake, 0-60 mph in 3.8 sec. beast - for the record it's only about mid-range in terms of bikes available in that category, but it's still a heck of a lot of bike for me).

For the ride down to Altona I tried plotting out a route that would take me on some secondary highways and backroads but I ended up a little too rural, with much mud and gravel to navigate thru (I felt like I brought a cruiser to Dakar), so on the way back I just drove up hwy 75. I was pretty cold and sore by the time I got home (I wouldn't want to do a longer hwy ride without a windshield) but it was an interesting adventure, and I'm not expecting a lot of sympathy considering everyone was racing yesterday.

As for the race, once again Altone proved to be a very, very spectator friendly course, and from all reports a very good, if brutal (in a good way), course to race. Kudos to all of the organizers/help.

I took a lot of pics but unfortunately only a handful turned out (appearantly shaking a cowbell and snapping pics at the same time does not yield in-focus shots) but I'll post what turned out below:

Deanna left her 'cross bike at home, in favour of her Salsa. Whatever turns your crank.

Tomek powers thru the sand on his beautiful I.F. 'cross bike.

The spritely Luc (I remember when I weighed 120 lbs, sort of) hops thru the sand.

Hal and Al duke it out in the sand pit.

Chris performs well despite a poorly set-up headset. No word on whether it's poor Chris King workmanship or the hapless 'mechanic' that installed it - namely me. Chris, I'll follow up with you on that today.

Jared, the eventual winner. Actually, he was winning from start to finish.

Dallas unceremoniously laps my wife. Jerk

My parents (pictured right) lurk in the shadows during the race (but still managed to offer their heart-felt support)

The only thing to surpass the excellent day of racing was my too-brief visit immediately afterwards to my Altona-residing Grandparents. Grandma had the world's best homemade noodle soup and buns waiting, and Grandpa was in very good form for a man who turned 94 earlier last week.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Cycling friendly Montreal

I was just in Montreal for a weekend visit with our son Jordan, who recently switched to Concordia university. The weather was very nice and people were out and active ... but it was the bike friendly aspects of the city streets that struck me and made me wish for better in Winnipeg ...

A lot of the main thoroughfares have dedicated bike lanes separated from traffic like a boulevard or by concrete blocks.
This includes right into the busy downtown!

On many narrower streets, they have established a system of oneways and marked bike lanes.
We could soooo do this in Winnipeg on some of those older residential streets where there is parking on one side and two way traffic that really doesn't fit!

At a few key crossings with busier streets, they have closed the crossing to cars and marked bike paths ... cool!

Result ...

Cyclists everywhere ...

neighborhoods with lots of bikes and less problems finding a parking spot!

If we want to save the environment and have a healthier community, we should look to places cities like Montreal ... c'est excellente !!!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board
