What 'cha doin' Red???

Working HARD - Putting a lot of time in on Little River Dragway, either there or working at the "times" office in Itasca on promoting the Grand Opening April 12th. Mike Elrod & I were there until 9:30 last night finishing up their communications system. We've put in the large amp that I had at Eastex, New speakers through the place and last night finished up "Radio Free Little River" It's a low power FM radio station that broadcasts on 91.9 and now you can listen for your lane calls all the way up to the CEFCO station in town when running for a 12 pack.
...The place is painted, striped, mowed, trimmed, patched, racing surface worked over BIG TIME, ground and polished. Hutch was working on it at sun rise he told me yesterday as he was hanging in with us last night 'till we left. Yea, there's still stuff to do that takes a lot of time or money or both but right now it's in as good a shape as I've ever seen it... Hope I get to show it to you all sometime soon - I'll be back working on Gulfport and the Labor Day Weekend Temple Drags probably next week - hollar

Funny e-mail story from Granddaddy Joe Smith

----- Original Message -----
From: Joe Smith
To: editor@texasscooter.com
Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2008 3:33 PM
Subject: Texas Danger, in the old days don't stop at a rest area.

Cool Web Site you have.

(Red's Answer)

Thank you pardner, Actually there IS a rest stop on the interstate here at Itasca and it's always been a point of contention. Construction on I-35 through here went on during my high school years and was finished in '68. It was a playground for us crazies back then...
Red

(Joe Smith's Reply)
Red,

Actually, Texas and Oklahoma didn't have very many rest area's in the old days. My Wife always hated going thru those states when we were tour racing, women have to pee a lot.

One year, going thru Oklahoma, Boris Murray, Dave Campos and my Family were driving along in a line (caravan). Murray was in the lead, I was right behind him and this old truck pulled in between us from a dirt road and got up beside Boris and the passenger stuck this big chrome western looking pistol out his window right at Boris but didn't fire the thing, Boris almost pissed his pants, we had to pull over so Boris could get his breath and while sitting there it started to hail, the damn things were the size of golf balls, some bigger. Leo Payne was traveling with Dave Campos and Leo stepped out the car and one hit him on the head and knocked him colder than a dead fish. It also ruined a couple vehicles. When there was bad weather in the East it could really be bad weather.

Granddaddy Joe
Labor Day Weekend '08 - 26th Temple Party Drags ARE ON!!!

Yep, that's right!!! My old friend Robert "Hutch" Hutchison who I was partners with at Eastex Dragway closed on the famous old dragstrip yesterday afternoon purchasing it from the widow of the former track owner just before it went on the courthouse steps for back taxes.
...Hutch had already assumed day to day operations of the run down racetrack 3 weeks ago and according to knowledgable local racers, "has already done more with it than was done in the last few years."
...Last week Mike Elrod & I put in a new p.a. system while Hutch had a concrete grinder come in and mill the track for 400'. He then sprayed a liquid sealer on the track and ran a Friday Nite Street Race and a Saturday Test & Tune. All the buildings have been repainted and the grounds are undergoing a SEVERE Cleaning.
...Expectations amongst the local Central Texas drag racing community are running wild as Hutch a 2 time NHRA National Champion revitalizes both the grounds and the operations of the newly renamed racetrack - Little River Dragway !!!!
...Quote me as saying that the track will be PRIMED & TIMED by Labor Day Weekend - Get READY....

What a life

Dear Ann, Hold your tears for Blanton you know he wouldn't want us fretting about his departure,John was ready for any situation that came his way. We talked for a good while at the AHDRA races last year. This is when he told us about his illness just didn't realize he would be gone not long after. When we got the news I questioned myself if I had said enough to console his spirit. As in our elderly it would be tough knowing life on earth could end at any given time,it's the being ready to face the master. I feel John had made his peace. He took his last road trip beings he rode into Dallas from Odessa for his last race,he got to have the thrill of the 'Big Boys" nitro burnin, ground shaking, lets haul ass Day!! I mean what a way to go!! My luck , I'll be hit by a bus !
Hell, now days riding can be a deadly thing, not for fear of crashin out but, for the thought of getting my tail shot off my bike. Sad but true, this is where the being ready to depart at any givin time kicks in..Just think, Blanton is going to miss out on the true battle...lock and Load Baby...
I believe he is at peace. True Peace. Blanton was a hoot though, We had fun together runnin our old fuelers! During one of our night races he pulls out his helmet and it has like an emergency light flashin on top! Style points he says!! James and I were at KT's one weekend working on our bike,we needed a rear tire for some reason. We called up Blanton to see if he had one, he did and we were off to Blantons for
our find. He lived in Kema off the Galveston Bay. Beautiful. He lived in a neat Beach house and served the best Margarita of the day! What a life he lived! I hope he knew how much he was loved all BS aside.
Well, we miss seeing our racing friends! Hello everyone! That's all folks...Kruel Girl 033
