Single Channel amp - channel switcher?

Hi, recently got a 15 Watt Orange Tube amp. I want to use it for both rythum and lead Playing, but I don't want to be twisting knobs in the middle of a song. And I dont want to use a distortion box because the amp already has great distortion. Does anyone know of an inexpensive gadget that would tweak your amp's volume and gain remotely?

thanks, Luke

Forum: Technical Discussion

Laney 50 watt pro tube lead

Hey guys, this is my first post. I am trying to fix a laney head for a friend. It is very very low volume, like it can only be heard if I play an iPod through it really high and crank the pre and master. I have checked all pre amp tubes, and am clueless to what else it could be. I don't have extra el34's to check if its the power tubes. Any ideas?
Forum: Technical Discussion

groove tube and sovtek 6l6 match

I had a couple sovtek 6l6s getting microphonic on me and needed to replace for a show that evening(w/o biasing). On the sovtek the numbers 00 08 were painted near the base. The guy at the shop sold me groove tube #7s and said they should be close enough to my 8s. Recently I saw a set of sovtek 6l6s with the numbers 03 14 on them. So were we wrong to assume that 00 08 would match to groove tube #8 being that their rating does not go to 314?

Forum: Tube Topics

Hi! Im kinda newb with tube amps. I recently bought peavey classic 30 combo 1x12 + a 4x10 peavey classic bottom. Someone told me i can use a ''power atenuator'' to get 100% of my tube potential. I understand how it work but dont know where to find 1 unexpensive or if i can find some schematic to build one myself :)

Forum: Technical Discussion

Mystery component

Hi all. New guy here with question. I've seen feedback circuits in a lot of amp schemos, but this one for an Ampeg V4 adds a .001 cap in parallel with the limiting resistor. This is the only amp I've seen it on, and am wondering why Ampeg might have included it. Thanks.

Best, Paul

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p71/goosefat/V4.jpg

Forum: Technical Discussion

Okay, I recently came across some Sovtek tubes ('60's, if I remember correctly) 6L6s and 12AX7s.

So my question to you all is, where can I find a great deal on a vintage (or at least vintage flavored) tube amp chassis to throw these bad boys in?

Thanks
-Fanta

Forum: Technical Discussion

6v6 gta and a few rectifiers

hey, im new in this forum. does anyone knows about making an small tube amp with just one 6v6 gta power tube??. i mean, i been looking to build this small amp pretendig to have only one power tube. i have some few rectifiers tubes but i dont think that i ve to worry to much about them. my problem is the amp itself, the power part.
i was thinking to build a preamp with op amps with tone controls and finding a way to mix this part to the tube part, i really dont know how to do it, and of course, i dont have an schematic of the tube part to follow. so, if anyone knows about a simple but effective tube amp with only just this little 6v6 gta tube i ll be very happy until the end of this year!!!!

Forum: Small Amps

Hot Rod Deville/ Mesa Lonestar?

I own a Fender hot rod deville 4x10... TO me the amp is harsh sounding every thing is stock... Im in love with The Lonestar tone...but not the price..Im sure I could clean it up with a compressor but Does any one know what could be done...to acheive that spongy tone like all tube amps including the rectifier.... Less harsh... maybe 2x12s changing tubes....THanks Tim....

Forum: Technical Discussion

Gradual building up of distortion on clean channel

I have a Fender '93 Super amp, 60W, 4x10 combo. When switched on, the amp gives a great clean sound. For about five minutes. Then slowly but surely its starts to distort, giving a fuzzy sound. If I turn down the volume on the guitar to zero, wait a few seconds, and then turn back up, the distortion is gone but it soon comes back. I'm just playing the amp at low volume (1 to 2 on the dial).

Any ideas what is the problem? I have found the schematic for this model and could try to replace parts. The guy I bought it off said it had been re-tubed about
1 year ago. It is a real pain to get to the pars because the PCB needs to be completely taken out, which means removing all the valves and a lot of screws.

Forum: Technical Support

18 watt has static-y distortion when cranked

Hi folks, another 18watt.com refugee here.

I've got an 18 watt I built recently that sounds great until it's cranked (8+ vol). At high volumes, especially when I really lay into the strings, there's a bit of high frequency static/buzz on top of the good/tasty distortion. It's fairly subtle, but once I hear it I can't stop hearing it, if you know what I mean. It's not an obnoxious 'farting-out' kind of noise. Is this crossover distortion I'm hearing? I did try upping the cathode resistor, as the bias current seemed high, but it required a pretty large value (300ohms or so) to get rid of the static-y noise, and that also got rid of much of the good distortion.

Currtently, plate voltages are 323v, bias current is about 39ma. I'm using a 150ohm cathode resistor with a 50uF bypass cap.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

John

Forum: Technical Discussion

Hi S2,
After I read your VJ upgrade instruction, it seems we like the same kind of tone.

So I've decided to put in my VJ a Weber 8F125. Here are some informations to order one of those :
Power : would you advise me a 20 W setting?
Dustcap : standard ?
Impedance : which value would you advise me ? 4, 8 or 16 ohm, assuming that I've got a Hammond 125DSE OT ?

Forum: Technical Support
