Band to play all of London Calling this wkend

Any Snewsers in Nashville? I'd never heard of this band before, but someone told me last night that their next album to cover live, in its entirety, is London Calling. I'm not close enough to go, but even if the musicians sound a bit more blues-rock oriented, I bet this will be a VERY interesting night of music!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - We all have a soft spot for the music of our youth, but few take it as far as the Long Players.

Every few months, this group of busy Nashville session musicians gets together to perform a classic rock album, in its entirety, at a local venue.

Last month, it was Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." In December, Van Morrison's "Moondance." Before that, the Beatles' "Meet the Beatles."

The members are all big-time players, Gary Tallent is bassist in Bruce Springsteen's E. Street Band, John Deaderick a keyboardist for the Dixie Chicks and Michael McDonald, but they manage to squeeze in the Long Players' shows between their regular gigs.

Named for the vinyl LPs they love, the Long Players have re-created everything from the Rolling Stones' "Let it Bleed" to Elvis Costello's "My Aim is True" since forming in 2004.

"There are other bands that do this kind of thing," said founding member Bill Lloyd. "But the difference with us is that we keep it in the community and get guest stars to be part of it. That gives it a different spin and keeps it from being a karaoke night."

That's easier to do in Nashville, where you can barely swing a guitar without hitting a talented musician or singer.

A different guest singer joins the band for most every song. Southside Johnny did the Stones' "You Got the Silver," Marshall Crenshaw the Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," and Alison Moorer sang Neil Young's "Oh, Lonesome Me."

Sometimes, someone from the original recording will sit in.

For "Highway 61 Revisited," Al Kooper came down from Boston to replay the signature organ riff on "Like a Rolling Stone," one of the great songs in rock history.

Kooper, who once lived in Nashville, has a lengthy rock resume. He founded the group Blood, Sweat & Tears, produced the first three Lynyrd Skynyrd albums and played keyboards on "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Rolling Stones.

"When Bill (Lloyd) told me about it in the beginning I was kicking myself that he didn't do that when I was still in town," Kooper said.

"I only have one more Dylan album I think where I played on the whole album, which is `New Morning.' But then we were thinking we could do some Lynyrd Skynyrd albums, and that would really be fun."

During the "Highway 61 Revisited" show, Kooper sat hunched over the organ in dark sunglasses. A tall guy in the audience with spiky black hair kept shouting along to the cryptic lyrics.

"You've been with the professors, and they've all liked your looks. With great lawyers, you have discussed lepers and crooks," he yelled during "Ballad of a Thin Man."

The Long Players choose the albums in more or less democratic fashion. The only caveat is that everyone has to agree; no one is forced to play something they don't want to.

"The newest records we've done so far were from 1978," said Lloyd, a solo artist who was half of the former hit country duo Foster and Lloyd. "We've not been able to squeak into the '80s as of yet. I think culturally there was such a glut of what's considered classics in that time period. Given the age we all are, the median age is the late 40s, we're still kind of stuck in the music of our teens."

The members are all friends who started performing together at an annual John Lennon tribute concert to raise money for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. They're also avid record collectors who spin vinyl into the wee hours. It didn't take long for the idea to take hold.

Besides Tallent, Deaderick and Lloyd, the members are guitarist Steve Allen of the former new wave band 20/20, and drummer Steve Ebe of the early '90s pop group Human Radio.

Each is expected to learn his part on his own, and they usually meet for only two rehearsals before the show.

For something more ambitious, like the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," they will call in a string section or horn players to augment the sound.

Even a seasoned musician like Lloyd says he learns something from each album.

Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Cosmo's Factory" had jarring time shifts, and the Pretenders' debut record contained deceptively tricky rhythms and guitar lines, he said.

"It's a great education," agreed Deaderick, who at 36 is the youngest Long Player. "I'm playing records that I didn't necessarily grow up listening to, and I'm playing them with guys who did grow up listening to them. So I'm learning from the record and from the guys in the band."

Ten percent of the proceeds from each performance go to charity. For the "Highway 61 Revisited" show, the money went to Doctors Without Borders.

"We want it to be something we enjoy doing," Lloyd said. "We don't make a lot of money doing it, so we're largely doing it for the love and the experience."

Rude Boy screening at BAM in NYC!

hey all you hip hoppers, punk rockers and show stoppers-

The Brooklyn Academy Of Music is showing three of my films plus allowed me to pick two that i liked- one of the ones i picked was Rude Boy and they were able to get a print of it. I dont know about you, but the only time I got to see it on screen was in i think 83 at midnight at the 8th st playhouse... be great if all the NYC clash city rockers came out for it and we can make it into a show-ill be at the 9pm show on Aug 14th.

The other film i picked was a great one by Aki Kaurismaki, which I couldnt reccomend any higher. Plus, if you want- check out some of what I've been up to, but no pressure, I know the clash is what its all about...

yeah so i saw the Clash the first time at this gig an Mick had a pint of Gilbeys gin down by his mic stand an kept takin swigs an a couple times passed it out to us in the crowd. twice i reached fo it but couldn't get it. listen to the boot- you'll hear the sound of mick drinkin gilbeys gin (my old brand!) an topper sounding like God .

1) Tymon will next be performing his music at The Sage in Gateshead, UK (aka Gateshead at the Sage) on July 24th 2008, as part of Hal Willners three-multi artist concert event series: Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys. The Sage Gateshead is a centre for musical education, performance and conferences, located in Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne, in the north-east of England. Tymon will be appearing at the Hall One venue, which kicks off at approx. 7:30 pm.

- Tymon will also be headlining a special festival afternoon of folk and roots music at the Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival held at the Georgian Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees, England, UK on Saturday, August 2nd 2008. This is a completely free festival but best to come down early if you want a space! Super Furry Animals, Happy Mondays and Paul Heaton (Beautiful South and Housemartins) will also be appearing at this year's Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival (Wednesday 30th July to Sunday 3rd August) with support from John Power, British Sea Power and Clinic. Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival is organized by the Tees Music Alliance, with sponsorship and support from Stockton Borough Council and Arts Council England. 2) Tymon recently played two solo shows in Germany. The first was on July 11th, 2008 at the Wild at Heart Club in Berlin and the second was a headlining spot for the Woody Bash Festival at the Hasenschaukel in Hamburg on July 12th. Here is a short memoir of Tymon and wife Susan's stay in Germany, courtesy of Susan (July 14th, 2008):

"The two gigs in Germany went well - particularly the 'Woody Bash' in Hamburg where the level of musicianship of everyone on the bill was really high despite (or perhaps because of) it being a small venue. The co-owner of Hasenschaukel, Tan, is quite visionary and pretty well connected and congratulations are due to him for putting such an ambitious project together with such success. The event went on from 5pm until the early hours. Tymon went on last after Amy Rude who is from Tuscan Arizona and a very gutsy and interesting singer-songwriter who plays great guitar. Also a finely tuned young Swedish band called the Unreachables played and a lovely young singer songwriter who goes out under the name of BooHoo whose stuff is a bit like a German version of Jeffrey Lewis. The audience were truly appreciative of all the music and seemed transfixed by Tymon's performance of around 50 minutes. The tetraharp was the subject of much fascination, among audience and musicians alike. DJ Baby Doll (who looks just like the name suggests) then played some great music until the place reluctantly closed. Hasenschaukel (which means 'rabbit swing') is a really quirky venue and anyone going to Hamburg should check it out. It's in the red light district of San Pauli but couldn't be further removed from its sleazy location, decorated like a sort of DaDa dream in pink, green and gold. Also, fantastic food and hand-crocheted merchandise. Sunday we were kicked out of our hotel at a very cruel hour but were lucky enough to find a bar which has its own fake beach strewn with comfortable mattresses called Strond San Pauli overlooking the busy port of Hamburg. Again, highly recommended.

"The Berlin gig at 'Wild at Heart' on the Friday night was well attended by young punks, curious kids and older people who were probably Clash fans, and, much to Tymon's surprise, his long-lost friend Ralfe who played bass guitar on 'Hollowed Out' and was one of the 'Fools' along with Richard Dudanski. Berlin is quite a scene these days - or at least Kreuzberg where 'Wild at Heart' is - a bit like London in the 1970s, full of idiosyncratic dressers and squats and alternative living projects. We were fascinated to see people living in brightly painted wooden trailers right in the heart of the city in woodlands shared with rescued animals! In the park near the venue, we found lots of people having impromptu parties (without being told off by the authorities as they would be here in England) and walking and cycling despite the fading light. In England people take dogs for a walk - in Berlin it seems people take their bottle of beer for a stroll in the park on a Friday night before heading out for the rest of the evening! 'Wild at Heart' is quite a hardcore venue run by a great bunch of people (thanks Uli, Lea) who also have a veggie restaurant next door."

3) A few weeks ago, I came across two Tymon albums that have not yet been released (and were never intended to be), recorded with his 'Frugivores'-era partner, Helen Cherry, possibly some time between 1977 and 1980, or 1985 and 1987, titled:

From Immortality to Immortality and The Lotus Train

Both albums were once for sale as audiocassettes at the Sri Sathya Sai Book Centre in London, England, though the store now apparently no longer stocks such items. I emailed Tymon and Susan about such recordings, and received the following reply from Susan:

"I have heard from Immortality to Immortality - it's from a very spiritual time in Tymon's life when he spent a lot of time in India The site you mention is probably to do with that. I am not sure if these tapes are still available but if Tymon has any spare ones I'll post you one. Tymon says he is going to use some of the tracks from the tapes on future releases but the tapes themselves were for a particular project and not as a commercial release. I think he was pretty surprised to hear anyone has got copies of them to be honest."

So, a possible release of such material in some way will be available in the near future.

4) Here are a few words about the recent 30-40 minute headlining set Tymon played at London 's 'The Offside Bar' on June 13th 2008 as part of the 'Long Hot Summer Party', again courtesy of Susan:

"It went really well except at the end when, incredibly, the pick-ups went on BOTH Tymon's violin and his Spanish guitar!!! I filmed it and it was very well attended. We especially liked Adrian Mitchell's set, he is called the 'Shadow Poet Laureate' of Britain because he's a great poet and very anti-establishment. He's pretty old now - well into his 70s - and didn't stay for Tymon's set but they had a good old chat before he left."

5) Merrill Aldighieri and I are still looking for distribution and television broadcast for Merrill's 2008 9 Lives of Tymon Dogg feature documentary.
