Presentation night

I have a dilema.

4 of my kids went off to form their own team - 2 dads decided I wasn't good enough. They tried to take all of my best players with them, even asking a dad that helps me to coach if he would manage their team. All this done behind my back, or so they thought.

The problem I have is that one the SAAC-WAAC dads has phoned and asked about presentation night, whether their son would be allowed to collect his trophy.

Now if he had just left to join another team, so be it, it happens. But the fact that he tried to take all my best players, then denied he'd done it, means I don't want him their. Now I can tell him his son can come, but he wouldn't be welcome, what happens if he does turn up?

C OF E - protocol

I was chatting to a guardian of an u14 player -DIV 1 and in the rep team ,who was told by his manager that scouts from the local pro club had watched several of his games .

The locker room vibe is that he has been chosen but no-one has heard anything or put anything on paper ,this was in april .So obviously the lad is going to be concerned .

Is there a protocol that clubs are supposed to follow ?
I don't know anything about this area of football .

Is the advice to ask the manager to chase it up ?

Hi, i am delivering this next weekend.

set up -target zone -1 target player and 2 wide servers
7 defenders plus gk 2-3-2 attacking target area
7 attackers 3-2-2 attacking big goal

(see diagram in post below)
start position -target player to central attacker 5 who plays a ball wide to attacker 2 to create a possible 1v1 (attacker 2 v defender 8)
Key factors
penetration -develop 1v1 situations
dispersal -create space wide, alert to combination opportunities
support -unit adjusts behind and around the ball
mobility -stretch opponents, create space behind and around defenders
Movement of all players to create space for 1v1 scenarios
positive attitude
techniques of dribbling -feints, scissors, slow in/fast out, change of pace.
when - when there is 1v1 situation
where -final third
how -techniques
end product -shot -cross -pass

cover if dribbler loses possession, recovery runs.

any thoughts on formations or coaching points?

FA Workforce Awards

I'm over the moon that I received a letter today from the FA, informing me that I have been chosen as one of the National Football Workforce Award Winners for 2007/2008 season.

As I understand, the winners of the County FA awards will be submitted to the national FA, which in turn will choose seven National Workforce winners and three National Young Persons Workforce winners to attend The FA Community Shield as their VIP guests. I didn't even know that I had been nominated, let alone won the County FA Award (Sheffield & Hallamshire).

I don't do my football for awards, I do it for a love of the game, but I feel this is a great honour for Bessacarr FC and every single person past & present who has been involved with the club.

We finished rock bottom of our league but our players won a tournament when we played at our level and the icing on the cake was winning the sportsman ship award at the end of the season.

Dear Manager / Secretary,

We are delighted to invite you to our Annual Football Tournament on Sunday 3^rd Aug 2008

Teams will take part in 11 a-side and 9 a-side football depending on their age group.

The tournament is taking place at Newbridge High School, Coalville, LE67 3SJ

11-a-side

Under 13s, 14s
the squads can consist of no more than 16 players
The duration of all games will be 15 minutes one way.
The entrance fee is 30.00

9-a-side

Under 11s and 12s
The squads can consist of no more than 12 players
The games will 15 minutes long one
The entrance fee is 30.00

There will be 2 groups of 4 teams in each the age group, your first three games will be played on a league basis, which will give position for the start of the knockouts.

Players must be of the appropriate age group for the 2007-2008 season (not for 2008/09). If you find that some of your regular players are not available, guest are allowed but no academy, school of excellence or over age players will be allowed to play. Players can only play for one team during the tournament.

Cheques should be made payable to NORTH WEST LEICESTERSHIRE YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE and sent to the above address with the application form(s)

The closing date for applications is July 25th but please reply early to avoid disappointment. Confirmation of your place will be sent with rules and start times etc nearer the time

Refreshments will be on sale at reasonable prices during both days.

I ran a session yesterday, well call it "ran". I told kids with a smile that I couldn't be bothered to coach them today and was having the day off. I said that they had to sort themselves out for the hour, all they had was 8 poles, 16 cones and 4 footballs, I would sit down and watch but would have absolutely no involvement unless absolutely neccessary (fights, injuries).

It took only 3 minutes for the 12 kids to sort themselves out and to my utter surprise and delight, instead of setting up a 6v6 game the made 2 pitches and had two lots of 3v3 this without my involvement and all their decision making. They picked teams and make themselves the pitchs to play on which I would estimate would be about 20 x 30 but don't know as they made it. They put the ball down and started playing some of the most beautiful football i've seen from them. 5 minutes from the end they packed everything away and even stretched themselves before going and getting their stuff and heading off.

Funny really as it's the session i've done the least in but the session they got the most out, not dissing my own coaching because there will be times that they will need some sort of technical structured work to improve individual skills but they really enjoyed themselves and were awesome in terms of attitude, determination and ability. At the end of the session a couple of the kids were saying "does it feel like this session has finished really quickly?" To which they all agreed. I then said to them...

"So guys you think the session has finished early?? A session like the one you have just done doesn't need to end after one hour, you did everything yourself today without any help from me at all, why don't you carry on with this session? Go home, have some dinner, then knock for eachother and go over the field and continue your matches???"

Great thing was that 9 of the 12 kids were over the field an hour later playing 4v5 and it was brilliant to see, it was quality and I felt alot of pride in myself for seeing them all down there, hopefully they all enjoyed it and will do it more regular and they will really develope the independance that will improve them for when they get older.

A quiet 5 minutes.

I took the training of the Nightmare under 14s last week and as usual you get the kids coming along in drips and drabs .

It was an unusal day in that the sun was shining ,there was for once no dog doo to pick up ,the lads keenly and without argument put the samba goals up .set out a beautiful pitch ,all had drinks ,shin pads ,no bling ,all in fact perfect .
I was extremly proud especially as they looked "good " to the under 9s who were training .

At drinks break there was a lot of chat about the Euro 2008 and then came a killer blow ,an older brother of some of the boys friend had died .
Then one by one all of them told of people that had died or pets that had died .
I told them about GUBOG world games day honouring a young footballer and also of Hoppys story ,of the liverpool supporter ,some are liverpool supporters and had seen it .

On their own intiative they decided that they must honour the dead as they do in football matches and also as they do on rememberance sunday .

They stood in a circle ,I did not join in ,but stood away in respect .

They stood still arms around each other shoulder height ,heads bowed for a full 5 minutes in total silence .

Scottish FA Talent Development plan

The Developing Talent Plan is a player centred approach that aligns technical and tactical development with the physical development of young players. The plan also includes the promotion of mental, social and lifestyle qualities which underpin the development of young players at every stage of their playing journey. This player centred approach emphasises the role of quality training programmes, together with the appropriate competitions structure which is correct for the age and stage of the player. The process is over a long term and is focussed on performance rather than the short term peaking for the weekend approach with its win at all costs mentality. Children and young players will always want to play a game and want to win in any game format and this needs to be fostered and encouraged. However, the role of practice and preparing to win needs to be addressed with varying emphasis at the different stages. Therefore, the proposed Player Pathway will:

Support player development

Reflect the principles of the Scottish FA Developing Talent Plan

Maximise the opportunity for playing but not to the detriment of practice

Avoid duplication in a players competitive schedule

Define clearly the appropriate game format to match ages and stages of development

Provide structured opportunities for both the identification and development of talented young players

Provide a structured player pathway that will allow the gradual introduction of appropriate rules and complexity to the game

Provide a structured player pathway that will allow the gradual introduction at appropriate levels of need to win competitions to all level of players

Promote a development culture and long term approach for parents, coaches, players and administrators in the game

RECREATIONAL COMPETITION PATHWAY:

The pathway will consist of the 4 a side game up to 7/8 years old (Under 8/9s), leading to the 7 a side game up to 11 year old(U12s). The 12 year old (U13s) season will be used as a transition to the parent game of 11 a side. This season will be split into 2 parts. The first half will consist of Developmental 11 a side with a retreating line, use of Match Supervisors and 3, 25 minute periods. In the second half leagues would have the option to continue with the developmental format or move into the full 11v11 game. No leagues or recording of scores

The Stages

Desire to Play (Male ages 6-9, Female 6-8 )
Learning to Play (Male ages 9-12, Female 8-11)
Developing the player (Male ages 12-16, Female 11-15 )
Preparing to compete (Male ages 16-18, Female 15-17)
Preparing to win (Male ages 18+, Female 17+ )
