Heres an update in the casting department

Right now, by my count, weve got eight men and five women

and, by my count, we have four male characters, four female characters, and four characters that could be either male or female:

Note: While those four either way characters have male names right now, I dont think theres any denying that any of them could be written in the other direction with a simple first name change if we decide to do so soon.

Anyway, heres what that means: weve got the right numbers right now of men and women to do the play were planning on, IF almost everyone on that list up top is, in fact, going to be playing an onstage role. It also means were one character shy, so either we need a thirteenth character, or one of us is going to need to take on an offstage position, such as stage manager. What Im getting at is this it will be really helpful to us if we can make those choices BEFORE we get too far into writing, so I think we need to try hard very soon to nail down who is set into what role. Some of you have spoken up with various interests, some of you have yet to speak regardless of which you are, please either email me with the characters that most interest you (hipius@twcny.rr.com) before tomorrows meeting, or come ready to declare your interests we can try our best to accommodate everyones wishes, but we can only do that if we all know what they are!

We also need to know right away if any of you are not going to be onstage with us (either because you can be involved but cant commit to the shows, or because youre thinking you might like to be stage manager this time around or something). So, please come with that info too (or email me if you wont be at the meeting).

Script Bits and Assembly

This thread is for posting up sections of rough script that you write. Take the ideas from the Plot Development message thread, and see if any of the plot segments get you thinking - try and write out some beginning dialogue for that section of the play, and post it up here.

Of course, also read what other people post and make your own comments and suggestions...

Plot Development

Well, we had two fantastically productive sessions this week, and we left today with a full, complete plot. It's a great one! I'll post it here... but first, a note on the next step...

The next step is to read this, comment and expand on it, and to begin to develop sections of written dialogue. Even if it's really simple, basic written dialogue based on any of the sections in this plot outline, it's still a start. This is the toughest part, so PLEASE help us get going by:

(1) Reading this and replying in this thread with your opinions, comments, ideas, and such.

(2) Taking any sections you think you can and beginning to convert them into scripted dialogue. Go ahead and post anything you write in the next thread, for Script Bits and Assembly, so we can all begin reading things, and posting suggestions and ideas for things to add and change.

We'll meet again next WEDNESDAY, JULY 5TH and THURSDAY, JULY 6TH in the Clubhouse at Appleseed Productions, hopefully bringing lots of script pieces and scenes with us to assemble, edit, develop, and fill in the blanks to a full and complete script!

The next post after this one in this thread will be a big one, the basic plot work we did this week. Get a drink and some popcorn, and enjoy!

Brainstorming: Which Production?

Well, the first question we need to answer together is which production idea we're going to go with. We brainstormed a few of them last weekend, any of which we could choose to run with, or we could still shift gears to something completely different... but we need to commit to a final choice really soon.

Under this thread, I'll post descriptions of a few options we've come up with. Please post any further ideas you have for variations on those options, or options that we haven't considered yet, and then also post your opinions about which option(s) we should consider closest...

Taming of the Shrew event announced

In August, we'll take in the Syracuse Shakespeare In the Park Festival's production of Taming of the Shrew. The performance is an especially good one to plan to go to, since it features Scene One alum Ted Limpert in a significant role, and also stars past occassional Scene One volunteer staffer Mark Allen Holt in a leading role.

WHERE: The performance is at the outdoor amphitheater in Thornden Park, just off of Ostrom Avenue. You can plan to meet us there, or if it would be easier for you to ride there with us, you can meet us at Appleseed.

WHEN: Thursday, August 17th. If you plan to meet us there, expect to look for us in the amphitheater at 5 PM (don't be much later - it's "festival seating" and you don't want to get stuck without a seat with the group!); if you would like a ride in, meet us at Appleseed at 4:15 PM (why so early? Parking can be a bit tricky at Thornden Park for this event).

HOW MUCH: Free! The Syracuse Shakespeare In the Park Festival summer performance is always free to the public. That's why we want to be there plenty early, since you're not guaranteed seats the way you are when you have to buy specific tickets...

RESERVATIONS: Reservations are needed for this event (if we don't know you're coming, we won't know to look for you or try and meet you), although you're welcome to just show up too - but we can't guarantee to be there saving a seat for you in that case! Renaissance Festival event announced

General Event Announcement:

On Saturday, July 22nd, Scene One makes its fourth annual trip to the Renaissance Festival in Sterling, NY, to spend the day browsing the shows and exhibits. The weekend we're going is "pirate weekend", so if you're the particularly crazy type, feel free to come in costume. It's been a great time every year so far, and we hope you'll join us! Limited transportation is available (and once we're full, we'll help arrange more rides if necessary, but you have to let us know when you make your reservation!).

WHEN: Meet at 9:45 AM in the Appleseed parking lot to load up vehicles, and expect to arrive back at the Appleseed parking lot at about 4:30 PM.

HOW MUCH: Going with us on the 22nd costs the DISCOUNTED admission price of $15. You'll want to bring money, too, though, for lunch (lots of really good places from whom to get food) and any money you care to have for souvenirs and such.

RESERVATIONS: Reservations for this event are MANDATORY (don't just expect to meet us as a surprise on the day of the event!), and can be made by leaving a message at 437-5141, or by emailing hipius@twcny.rr.com

Tuesday, June 27th, 5 to 8: Meeting to brainstorm and review ideas, begin assembling the structure of our story and the characters, and hopefully add participants to the group...

Wednesday, June 28th, 5 to 8: Meeting to finish assembling the structure of our story and characters, and set up some specific sections of the play to draft out over the next week...

Wednesday, July 5th, 5 to 8: Meeting to read through drafted play segments, edit and adjust them, and brainstorm further ideas...

Thursday, July 6th, 5 to 8: Meeting to finish making all remaining choices about the plot, determine segments still needing writing or revising over the next few days...

Scene One Summer Production Underway

Well, we had our first meeting for the summer production this past Saturday, and we generated quite a few ideas, some of them pretty promising. The next step will be to brainstorm ideas about characters, plots and subplots, and other ideas, so that we can begin to organize the play at our meetings next week and get writing. With that in mind, I've created a forum on the message board for the summer production, and I'll be shortly posting a few of the most promising ideas that we discussed this past week. Read them over, think about any ideas you can come up with to add to and expand on the ones we're working with, and then read other people's ideas and reply with feedback and additions to those. That way, if we all keep checking back in at least once most every day to respond to the new ideas and build on them, we should have a lot to work with next week.

Also, certainly the one thing we most need right now is more people... tons of people told me they were going to do the show, but I was disappointed that many of them didn't attend this past weekend... get spreading the word, and try to make our group larger - we'll need at least a few more people for most of the ideas we've been tossing around!

Let's get postin', and I'll see you next Tuesday at 5 PM at Appleseed!
