Environmental impact of stocking

Can you imagine the EA being prevented from authorising the stocking of rainbow trout because a full environmental impact study had not been done!

http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/localnews/ci_11114886?source=rss

A couple of tackle questions

1) Can anyone recommend a nice lure rod to use with the baits I mentioned in my previous posts (i.e. small soft baits, Mepps type spinners, small plugs etc). Budget would be about 30-50, so obviously no Hardy rods....... I've looked at the Empire Light FS (2-Piece) available from sovereignsuperbaits as well as various Shimano rods (something like the nexave spinning rod 3-15g or 5-20g). Are they all very similar at this sort of price point?

2) What's the deal with baitcaster reels? a) what advantages do they give over fixed-spool? b) can you use them on any rod, or does it have to have one of those trigger-things sticking out?

Cheers,

Pete

New Berkley line

New type of Fireline - Fireline braid.

Looks like it consists of about 8 strands if fused linear dyneema, braided around each other to give a more flexible product. They also reckon it maintains cross section well, so should have good knot strength.

http://www.berkley-fishing.com/prod.php?k=134072&sk=134070&u=FBFS#zoom-/dimg/fc82343da62ef49c9ee0e39f2600ca99.jpg

Thames piking

Has anyone had success at lure fishing for pike on the Thames? Can anyone recommend a good set up for Thames lure fishing from the bank, i.e. rods, reels, lures, etc.?

To date I've been using a nine foot rod, fixed spool reel loaded with 40 pound braid and lures with single hooks such as shads, to minimise losses with all the snags. I've had a few pike to 14 pounds, but mainly jacks.

Thank you
Bib or Lip shapes.

Assuming we're using exactly the same profile crankbait, same sized lip, can anyone explain the different actions i might get from a rounded edge lip as opposed to a square cut lip? 99% of the lures available seem to have a rounded lip, but i've seen a couple with square lips.

Pike and water Temperature

Been going back over catch returns recently and transfering data to spreadsheets. This was mainly to look at moon phase, but while at it I recorded other stuff as well.
Its a bit of a pain, but once you have the data tabulated there are all kinds of different ways to look at it.
This plot of numbers of pike caught against water temperature is quite interesting.

Cork handles

Mentioning corks on the other thread has just reminded me.

Several of my rod handles are showing signs of wear and tear from rod holders and I would like to patch them up. I was thinking of mixing up some sawdust with something to fill up the nicks and then sand smooth.

Any suggestions as to the magic something?

In my tackleshop days I remember the boss using nasty stuff called cascamite (spelling?) to fix corks.

Yours in anticipation
Knobbly rods of Abingdon

New boat, any equipment tips?

I do a fair bit of kayaking, now it's time to combine it with fishing, so I've just got myself a new (2nd hand!) fishing boat, a Native Watercraft Ultimate 12.
It's not a fishing model, even though they do make one. I'll be fitting a couple of rod holders, but I'd appreciate any advice on what else I might need to fit or carry that I wouldn't need for fishing from the bank, or for normal canoeing. Also, what length handle do you have on your boat nets, to use with a short lure rod?
Thanks!

Lazy pike?

I'd be interested to know what you think, but I've got a theory that pike in some waters that are heavily fished for carp become too used to mopping up the huge amounts of boilies thrown in as groundbait, and forget about eating fish.
This might be a big leap, but I've noticed that in my local carp lakes (which I know hold pike) they're just not interested in taking lures. I don't know if they'll take deadbaits, as I only ever lure fish. Are some pike just not interested in chasing lures? Could I be wasting my time fishing there, or is there something else I could try?

Year-round fishing?

Hi. I'm new to this forum and relatively new to lure fishing, so I've got a few questions.
I started fishing only a year or so ago, with my brother in law and I've since done a bit of float fishing on rivers/ponds etc. However, I like to take my 4 year old son and so the appeal lure fishing is unquestionable as he can be much more involved (selecting lures, retrieving etc) plus of course we're never sitting still for too long so he doesn't get as cold in winter. I've bought a season ticket for Bicester DAA which allows me to fish Oxford waters - quite a few miles of the Oxford canal, a short stretch of the River Cherwell and some of the Thames. To date, we've just been spinning on the canal, using light tackle in conjunction with Mepps spinners (they catch perch!), floating lures etc. We're not after monsters - any catch is a small victory at the moment and perch seem to be taking at the moment (or at least they were a couple of weeks ago). Can anyone recommend fish to be targeted at various times of the year using lures/spinners? I understand now is a good time for pike, although we'd probably not target these specifically. Will perch take a lure all year round? I prefer to put floating lures on my lad's rod as they're less likely to sink when he pauses in his retrieve and end up snagged on the bottom. Are floaters any good for perch? Can anyone recommend any other targets or methods that might be suitable? I have noticed spinnerbaits on various tackle websites, but have never used them. Are they good?

Sorry that this is a bit of a rambling post. I'm basically after any tips or advice going at this point in time!

Cheers,

Pete

boat nets

Any opinions on the best boat net available at the moment - i loaned my masterline toothy critter net to some buddies for a Thames trip and they managed to capsize in a thames weir and lost everything. Thankfully they are ok thanks to the emergency services and their lifejackets.

I thought the masterline net was ok but it was not totally fish friendly due to the large mesh side which meant I did not like to lift fish into the boat using the net as sometimes it resulted in split tails.

Is there a more fish friendly net out there so I can take this as a chance to improve my kit?
