Batch Size confusion

I have tried to search. I've looked at Help. I have raised a topic in another forum, but I'm still confused, and I'm not alone:

Is the Batch Size setting in the recipe the volume of wort at the end of the boil (prior to any wastage to and out of the fermenter)?

Is this setting figure calculated for shrinkage as if cold, or is it the volume of the hot wort?

Cheers.

Forum: ProMash Help

Hop AA%c Loss Adjustment

When you calculate AA% loss, what date do you use as a starting point? If I bought a pound of hops in January 2008, how old are they?

Am I better off calculating the age (and the resulting reduction in AA%) from September/October 2007 since that's when they would likely have been harvested and processed?

Forum: ProMash Help

Volume Measurements: hot or cold?

In the "Water Needed" window, are the figures measured hot or cold or some hot, some cold?

If I measured 12L mash water cold, it would be 12.48 (+4%) after heating. ( - to 100?)

For example, I was wondering whether to measure the mash water and the sparge water cold, and then heat it up to dough in/sparge temperature, or to heat it up first and then measure - but this then means slightly variable readings depending what temp your dough in/sparge temp is.

I've just built a new system and I'm trying to get all these figures in this window as accurate as possible so knowing this would help a lot right now. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
-Ryan
Forum: ProMash Help

When I try to do a new recipe in the ProMash Recipe Formulation Window, I've discovered that the Mash Schedule Bar at the bottom of the window does not come on. Do I have to uninstall/reinstall this or is there another solution to get around this problem? The Mash Schedule Bar will work for my old recipes but not the new ones. Any help would be appreciated.
% ADF formula?

I was wondering what formula Promash uses to calculate %ADF? I already know the relationships and differences with ADF and RDF so this is not what I'm asking about.

I thought the basic formula for %ADF was: OG-FG / OG-1

Example: 1.072-1.018 / 1.072-1 = .75
This is 75.0% ADF

When this example is entered into Promash however, it tells me 73.85% ADF?

I've also noticed in the Promash calculator, that if you enter two examples of different OG's and FG's but identical attenuations: The example with the higher OG will be even further off from the formula that I use?

Not a real big deal, just wondering.

Forum: ProMash Help

L Water/KG Grain Ratio

I have ProMash setup in the metric system.

Error: The L Water/KG Grain Ratio value changes for no apparent reason.

How to reproduce:

When working on a brewing session and having both the 'Edit Ingredients' and the 'Mash Schedule' windows open:

1. change the L Water/KG Grain Ratio value on the Mash Schedule window
2. on the Edit Ingredients window, change either the amount of malts or the efficiency percentage
3. Now check the L Water/KG Grain Ratio, it has about doubled, resulting in a way too large After Cooling (4%) value on the Water Needed window...

When clicking Ok on the Mash Schedule window after changing a value as in 1. above, the error does not appear.

Forum: Bug Reports

Different IBU results on different computers

Our brew club uses Promash on several different laptops. When we all input the same recipe, we get different results for hop IBU's. We have ensured that we are all using and have saved the same setting in the 'system setting' tab. The difference is large enough (10 - 20 percent difference) that rounding should not be an issue. Can anyone help explain why or how to correct it?

Thanks

Forum: ProMash Help

Transferring session files

I recently pieced together an old computer setup to have in my brewhouse to diddle with whatever recipe I'm brewing out there. I formulate my recipes on my main computer in the house, then burn them to a cdr and load them onto the brewery computer. The problem is that the transferred files are read-only. I can open them and play around with them, but I cannot save any changes that I make. What am I doing wrong? Can I transfer files and have them turn out normal?

Forum: ProMash Help

Inventory rounding issue

I have finished a brewing session and have finalized my inventory.

When I opened the grain database and checked 'Only Show Items In Stock', I found some entries with 0.00 Kgs In Stock. I would have expected them to have disappeared, because I have used exactly what was in stock...

I think that after using 'Lock Ingredients to Batch Size' or some other feature which causes ingredient calculations, Promash rounds the kgs to two digits for display, but in reality works with more digits.

You can reproduce it, because when you double click an ingredient entry, you can edit kilograms with 3 digits and even grams with two digits. Everywhere else you only see two digits. Enter 9,999 kgs, which will show up as 10.00 kgs. When you have 10.00 kgs in stock, after finalizing, you will have a stock of 0.001, which shows up as 0.00.

It is not really a bug, but it is confusing for a first time user. You can enter more precision that you see.

Maybe truncating the values to the set precision would solve this...

I have opened the inventory screen for these items and clicked 'Set to Zero' and then all is fine.

Forum: Bug Reports
