Pinske "miracle bit" 1000 ipm

Just needed to drop in here and thank Tom and the Pinske folks for their help. We have been using 1/4" bits from "another manufacturer" on our CNC for about 3 years now. We were going through 4-6 bits per month, or more, if we cut any hard veined or mica material. I read on the Fabricator Network site about a bit that was cutting 1000 i.p.m. and lasting up to 3 months~!!! I was skeptical at first, until I saw the "Pinske" name was attached to it, so then I was intrigued. I called Tom and asked him for some more information. He took the time to give me the details and his recommendation for the cut rates for our CNC. I then ordered the bit and started cutting 4 days later when it arrived. I'm about 10 days and 60 sheets into using this bit(30 of the sheets were 144" x 8" window sills, so we were cutting alot of inches in those sheets!) and it was Veined material! Seams are good and "pull-able" right off the machine. Our programming guys and our shop is still in awe on the efficiency we have gained!

I just spoke with Tom again to thank him for his time and his contributions to the Industry. He is the man!

Thanks again,

Brady Hudson
Maxwell Counters
Sanding cove splash glue lines...

Here is one perhaps you can set me right on...Most of my experience comes from being a granite and stone fabricator, but now I work with "solid surface" material and we frequently do cove splashes off the V-groover.

When one sands these glue seems down...is it imperative to keep your DA sander completely flat?...or is it ok to angle it a little with lighter grits on "random" action? Sometimes there can be some real low spots and sanding them evenly can take forever and also eats way too much material.

I'm usually hitting them with 120 micron paper on rotary until the glue line is smaller than a 1/16th of an inch (staying as flat as possible) and then 120 random with sometimes a bit of an angle to the sander until the line can't be seen/felt anymore. Followed be a 60 micron random finish (usually).

Maybe the grits vary shop to shop, but is this basically the standard operation?

Thanks

Screwed up Cove

Built up a SS split level island with vertical SS connecting the two surfaces. I tried gluing the cove strip in after it was built. I apparently didn't get the cove strip seated very well because it looks like crap. Glue lines are glaringly apparent. My options are to route out the cove and try again, but given my success the first time, I am hesitant to try it this way again. I'd like to separate the two decks by cutting 3/8" up from the bottom deck along the entire length of the backsplash. Then remove remaining waste from the rest of the bottom deck and route and glue in a cove strip before re-attaching the the upper deck/splash, the way I should have done it in the first place. My problem is how to make this cut. The counter is pretty much fixed in place. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Steve
No Drip Edge

What kind of router bit is used to produce a no drip edge for solid surface countertops with inside radius corners?
Is there a router bit with a bearing guide that allows you to set the router on the counter surface? Any info would be helpful!
The bits I see all need to be run holding the router horizontal.
Split level counter

I have a customer who wants a split level counter with the upper level having a 8 - 10 inch overhang. The split levels are to be tied together with a 7" high backsplash. Coving the backsplash to the lower level isn't an issue, but I've never seamed the upper edge of the splash to another horizontal level of SS. On top of all this, the counter has 2 45 degree bends to form a 90 degree angle. I've got the support for the overhang already installed. I plan to strengthen the backsplash/ upper counter with a strip of ss on the inside of the seam. I guess my question is, is it easier to run the seam between the upper edge of the backsplash and upper counter under the upper counter, or the seam on the backside of the backsplash and fit the upper counter to the backsplash? Also, any other suggestions would be appreciated.... Whew, long description....

Steve

I've been in the solid surface/stone surface industry for several years and I was wondering if it is recommended to apply a small bead in the front of my solid surface edge details or a thick bead in the middle until I see glue squeezing out the back(for Corian type countertops not stone)? Thanx, Mike R.
