Oriyas in Johannesburg, South Africa

Hi, my name is Guddy Nanda.I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have been in this country since 1997 & my husband since 1989. When we came first to this country, there were no Oriya family here but as days & years passed many people from Orissa started coming to this country. Now we are about eight to ten families staying here. It is very nice to see so many people coming from Orissa & still maintains their culture & tradition. We still observe our Ekadashi, Dewali, Holi, Panchuka, Kartik, Kumar Purnima, Manabasa Gurubar, Savitri Amabasya etc.Even though our children goes to local schools & speak only English, we, as parents make sure to comunicate with them in Oriya & Hindi. One thing above all which we all agree that no matters where we stay & what we do.....we always eager to welcome anyone coming from Orissa & go back to our BHITAMATI....MAA UTKALA JANANI when time comes.BANDE MAA UTKALA JANANI..

What's the best thing u did yesterday?

Dear All,

It appears as if Oriya Nari Message Board is mostly filled with monotonous postings. There is nothing in it to keep us involved on a continuous and instant response basis. Here is a way to make it interesting.

I begin with a question to be answered by anyone of you. Then whoever answers will raise a question to be answered by another. This process continues till there is quest for finding answers to questions.

Remember, the question has to be short and relevant to various issues of human existence. Similarly, the answer has to be short and practicable.

So here we go. The Question is: What is d best thing u did yesterday?

Spiritualism and wellbeing

A lot has been said and done about what keeps us healthy and fit. Yet there are problems in health with most of us living in this modern age. Regardless of what we eat and how we adopt various activities/exercises to remain healthy, often we fall victims to several ailments and seek medical relief.

But, take the instance of our ancestors who led a simple life and did not have all the comforts of modern days. How do they remain so fit even at an advanced age? What did they eat? What did they do?? The answers are not uncommon. They led a very systematic life, doing some spiritual activities. Most of them remain on fasting often in the name of worshiping or doing some ritual. The food they take is very simple, vegetarian invariably. Yet they are much stronger than many of us in the present generation. Is the secret of their health due to their faith in God and the spiritual practices? Would it be possible on our part to replicate their behaviour in order to remain fit?? There could be many such questions which are worth pondering about to find solutions which could bring in sustainable wellbeing among us. Views and comments are most solicited to set forth probably one of the most urgent discussions that we all could contribute to. So let all of us ponder and inform whatever ways we could to carry on this topic. The key issues to focus on are as follows:

- Are spiritual practices necessary to remain healthy?

- Can anybody remain strong by taking simple food?

- Can fasting have any positive contribution to health?

- What activities in normal course of living could sustain good health?
