Flowering Cherry Trees

Hi there. I'm a total beginner in gardening and tree planting so I'd like to ask help from all the kind folks here. For the longest time, I have wanted to plant a flowering cherry tree here in my backyard in Toronto but I'm not sure what kind I should plant or if it is even possible. Although I've heard that there are Yoshino cherry trees in High Park in Toronto I'd like to know what flowering cherry trees are suitable or can survive the weather here. Any opinions and advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. :)

Forum: Trees and Shrubs

Green Soil

Hi There; A little help please!

My new rose garden is doing quite well. But I have recently noticed some soil with an almost lime green color to it. Yes basic mold struck me first, but this doesn't appear to be growth. It's almost like some one took a spray can of paint to a small area. Just on the surface.
I am a complete novice, so if it is mold I just don't know any better. Any help on what it is and what to do about it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dazz

Forum: Insect Pests and Diseases

Hi,
I've had Ruby Stella and a Stella d'oro daylilies for about 3 years now and the d'oro is blooming but the ruby has never. I do plan to split it just to be sure that is not the problem but have you ever had a lily that was not able to bloom? and if so what is the likely reason?
Linda

Forum: Annuals, Perennials and Flowers

Amur maple

Hi, can anyone tell me if the seeds of the Amur maple "Acer ginnala" sprout new trees? My predecessor had planted several common maple on my property, and the seedlings they produce are my most prevalent weed. I love the Amur maple because of the lovely flowery seed clusters in spring and the red fall color, but don't want the extra work of weeding seedlings. Thanks.

Forum: Trees and Shrubs

I live in the chicago land area,i have a new port plum tree, and they are full of japanese beetles, the tree is two years old.The beetles ate the leaves last year, and now they are starting to do the same this year.I went twice to the garden shops and each told me some thing different, first i got something consintrated that i diluted and put at the base of the tree, which did not make sence to me because the bettles are eating up the leaves, then i got another consintrate and sprayed the leaves the beetles slowed down and after a few days they are back in full forse. please help me.

I live in Centeral Alberta and I have Irises (not beared) that are next to a pond. They have done very well here for the past 4 years, but this year one clump of them is starting to turn yellow and brown. Could it be because of the landscaping fabric (which may be preventing them from spreading), overwatering or some type of insect. Could someone help me to figure out what the problem may be. I have never had problems with this before and have no idea what might be wrong.

Forum: Annuals, Perennials and Flowers

Success growing tulip tree on prairies

Has anyone had success growing a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipfera) on the prairies? They have a listed cold hardiness of zone 4 or 5. I planted one last summer and it survived the winter with only minor tip dieback. It is presently leafing out, after a slow start this spring. The tree is only about 2 feet tall and of small diameter, so as it grows I am hoping it's chances of survival increase.

Forum: Trees and Shrubs

Asparagus Blossoms

I have some newly planted Jersey Supreme plants, and a couple of them have little yellow blossoms. Are these male blossoms, or does this mean they are female plants? Is it beneficial to pluck the blossoms off to help the plants get established like they say to do for strawberries and blueberries?
Forum: Edible Gardening - Fruits and Vegetables

Pepper identification

My husband and I started some peppers from seed in the house early. After we planted them, we had a hard frost and thought we lost all them. In the patch where I have planted some other spreading plants (rhubarb, chives & mint) there are 4 other plants that are growing there. My husband is not sure if they are peppers that may have survived or not. I am not sure either but they are growing where I planted some of the peppers earlier. They are spreading out and have green almost heart shaped leaves. If they are a weed, they will have to go. I haven't seen anything like them growing anywhere else in the yard or forest. Any ideas what they might be would be most helpful. Thanks.

Forum: Edible Gardening - Fruits and Vegetables

I need help selecting a tree!

I have a raised deck, which looks onto our neighbors back yard. I want to put a tree in between my deck and my fence to get a bit of privacy.

My main concern is the tree will have to be planted about 8 feet away from the house, and I do not want a risk of having the roots damage the foundation. I was originally thinking of a Swedish Aspen as it is a quick growing tree that isn't very wide, but I read somewhere that the roots will damaged a foundation.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally I would like a faster growing tree so I do not have to wait years to get privacy...

Forum: Trees and Shrubs

holes in boulders

Has anyone ever seen large square boulders with a hole in the middle used as an ornament on front lawn?? I live in RI and in Providence the houses are 100-200 years old and in the front of some of them there are these rocks. I've heard that it might have some relegious meaning (actually supposedly Satanists lived in these homes), but I think it could be Urban legend. I can't find anything on line and I'm hoping someone out there knows anything about this. Thanks

Forum: Topical Discussions
