Pig pen specifics

Hi all,

I would be most appreciative if those of you who have hogs could provide me with the following information:

Dimensions of your pig pen
Number of pigs you keep per year (not including piglets)
Dimensions of you hog house
Type of hog house (either enclosed, 3 sided shed or lean to shed)
Type of base for hog house (concrete, concrete covered with dirt, or dirt)
Type of base for pen (none-dirt, stone)
Type of drainage
Short description of the fencing around the pen.

I'm trying to get a project initiated for an adequate pen and the powers that be need this type of information. If you add an email address, I'll contact you if I have any questions or to perhaps get a photo or two.

Buying Lye for Soap Making

I used to make soap years ago, and I plan to do it again. But where does one buy lye? My local hardware store and farm supply store (where I used to buy it) no longer carry it. A police officer friend told me it's used to make meth, and he doesn't think I'll be able to buy it anywhere (have you tried buying sudafed lately?).

Can it be ordred online or through the mail?

Please let me know if you know of any sources to buy lye.

This is administrative work in which the incumbent serves as Director of Education for the agency's Museum Division. Work involves formulating, directing, and controlling the operations of the Museum Division Education branch through subordinate personnel and conferences with other branch managers, site directors, and administration personnel. Incumbent ensures coordination of activities of branch with all sites within the Museum Division. Incumbent establishes objectives, national level museum professional standards and control measures for education branch and determines, writes, and implements policy in own area of expertise. Incumbent is responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of a wide range of educational programming and events at Museum Division sites and off-site throughout the state.=A0 Incumbent develops strategic plans, prepares and manages education branch budget, and works with outside professionals and other agencies. Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:

Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university; AND four (4) years of experience in the special experience defined below, one (1) year of which must have included line or functional administrative or advanced technical supervision.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university; AND five (5) years of experience in the special experience defined below, (one (1) year of which must have included line or functional administrative or advanced technical supervision.

Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED); AND nine (9) years of experience in the special experience defined below, one (1) year of which must have included line or functional administrative or advanced technical supervision.

Special qualifications: At the Bachelor's or higher level, degree must be in education, museum studies, historic site management, archaeology, anthropology, history, southern culture, classics, or art, with required experience, all of which must have been in museum or historic site management of educational programming; or at the high school or GED equivalent level, the required experience must have been in museum or historic site management of educational programming.

Special Experience:
Employment must have been in an administrative, professional capacity in an area of work related to the functional responsibility of the branch in which the position exists. In those branches where registered specialists provide the primary source of functional and technical knowledge for planning and accomplishing the mission of the branch, the incumbent may also be required to be registered and experienced in that profession. Work experience must have included supervising and coordinating a variety of functions.

Historical Interpreter -Hartwick Pines Logging Museum

There is an immediate opening for one historical interpreter position at the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum in Grayling, Michigan. This is a field site of the Michigan Historical Museum and is an AAM accredited museum. Position details are as follows:

There is one position available for a motivated individual who can work on his or her own and with others as a seasonal historical interpreter at the Logging Museum at Hartwick Pines State Park near Grayling, Michigan. The Logging Museum is a field site of the Michigan Historical Museum interpreting the White Pine Logging Era in Michigan from 1840 to 1910.

This is a non-career State Worker 4 position. It pays $9.00 an hour and has an allotment of 500 hours. Candidates must be available from Memorial Day to late August or Labor Day, and ideally during the month of May. Qualified candidate must pass a drug test and background check for employment consideration.

Duties of the position: On-site interpretation of the Logging Museum, living history interpretation, presenting public programs, presenting an occasional evening campground program, assisting during the annual Wood Shaving Days Festival in July and the Black Iron Days Festival in August, conducting historical research and performing light maintenance of the Logging Museum buildings and exhibits, and other duties as apply. The successful candidate will be working with other interpreters.

Qualified applicants must have an interest in Michigan and U.S. History -especially of events during Michigans lumber era, be able to talk to the public, be able to work with large amounts of people, enjoy working out of doors, and be physically able to stand for long periods of time, work with logging equipment for demonstrations (axes, saws, marking hammers, etc.) and be able to walk long distances. (We will make reasonable allowances to you if you cannot meet the physical needs.) Students majoring in History, Communications, Education, Museums or related fields are preferred, but not required.

There is no housing availble, but we will work with the successful candidate to find housing.

HISTORIC SITE COORDINATOR-- The Milwaukee County Historical Society is seeking applicants for the position of Historic Site Coordinator to manage Trimborn Farm, and coordinate activities for three historic homes located throughout Milwaukee County.

Responsibilities include the supervision of daily operations at Trimborn Farm, as well as the coordination and development of education and restoration programs. Specific duties will include the recruitment and training of volunteers to serve as docents, marketing of the four facilities to targeted audiences, scheduling of tours for school groups and adult visitors, supervision of restoration projects, and planning and coordination of four major weekend events annually.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in museum studies, history or a related field (M.A. preferred), with 2-5 years of experience in a museum setting. Experience with living historical farms or agricultural museums is preferred, as is background and work experience in historic preservation and education. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, along with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Good morning all;
In doing some reading about the U.S. Christian Commission, during the Civil War, The period I work in.
I came across a couple things I am wondering if anyone might clarify. They talked of boxes of lemons. My thought is a crate more like an apple crate. Any ideas?
The other talked about breaking open a barrel of crackers. How large might this have been? I in vision quite large to feed an army. How about the crackers? I know that hardtack was called hard crackers. I can not imagine trying to feed sick and wounded soldiers on hardtack There is some of that stuff still around! I am hoping more like Westminster crackers. I think I could live on those.

We are currently exploring the idea of expanding an existing First Peoples program to include a contact period hunting encampment. The discussion brought up a few questions that the lists collective wisdom might help address. Can you suggest any Chicago-area contacts willing to help on this shoestring budget project? Do you have any reading list recommendations? And has anyone found a source for sewn cattail mats or artificial elm bark for lodge construction?

Capturing the flavor of a tavern in southern Michigan, James Gordon wrote in 1836:
"Our inn is crowded to suffocation and the sitting room filled with stage drivers and citizen boarders smoking pipes and playing euchre, the national game of Michigan."

The Michigan Historical Museum is looking for information about the card game euchre, especially as it was played in the Midwest in the 1830s. Was it as popular and widespread as Gordon implies? What social groups played it most? How close were the rules to those used today?

Information about other time periods and other card games would be welcome as well.
