Two more Michigan foods

1) Blue Moon ice cream

2) I have a theory that City Chicken originated in Hamtramck during the meat strikes of 1935. It's on the menu at every Polish restaurant in Hamtramck, but outside of Southeast Michigan and a few east coast cities, people have never heard of it. City Chicken is pork and veal cubes on skews, breaded and then baked.
I am planning an event for some students who will also be seeing the exhibit, and I would like to include a taste of some traditional 'Michigan' foods, expecially those they may not have had before. Other than pasties , what should I include? In other words, what do you think the top few foods are that represent Michigan as opposed to other regions?

Thanks for any help!
sour cream coffee cake with hickory nuts

The recipe sounds wonderful. The nuts in the container look just like the ones I picked from the trees in my yard. However, shelling the meat is quite impossible for me. The shell is so convoluted and the meat so tight I am frustrated. The bits I have extracted are wonderfully sweet and flavorful, but even the squirrels leave them on the ground. Is there a method to coax the nut meat from its shell? I have kept some nuts in the garage over the winter hoping drying them might shrink the meat and pull it away from the shell. Haven't had much luck with that either. Please advise.

Norwegian Lefse & Children's Ethnic Recipe Contest

(posted by MHC with permission from Anita Campbell and Cindy Drake):

Dear Anita & the rest of the Isle Royale Natural History Assoc.:

I wanted to _thank_ you for the fabulous project you just conducted
- the Children's Ethnic Recipe Contest! We participated in it and had a
fascinating and fun time every step of the way. We started with
learning a lot more about our heritage than we knew before - some
fascinating stories. Then we worked together for an evening making our
Norwegian Lefse. Danielle asked me "Did those Norwegians have a lot of
time on their hands?" After laughing we talked about perhaps more time
was spent in the home than happens now. Then the contest itself was
exciting and interesting. It was incredible reading other collected
histories. The kids enjoyed the food demonstrations/cooking projects.
Topping off the whole event with such a scrumptious smorgasborg was the
best! Danielle was so proud of herself entering this contest.
This whole experience gave everyone who participated so much
pride in each of our heritages, coming together as a family,
intergenerational connections and revival of family traditions. One
more thing I observed was that unlike traditional methods of history
collection that tend to emphasize men's accomplishments in the world,
this method really highlighted the "tradition or culture
keepers"...women in families.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Do it again sometime.

Sincerely,

Cindy Drake (Danielle Drake-Flam's mom)
Houghton
