Obedient cards

After seeing Michael Close "jazzin" with his mem deck in a lecture, where he can pretty much magically reveal any named card repetitively, I wanted to investigate this type of "obedient cards" effects.

Close discusses this effect and related techniques in his Worker #5. The difficult part is to get comfortable with the estimation techniques required to "hunt" the cards. He suggest using "the wishing trick" from Worker #5 to get there, because there is a built-in error correction procedure in the routine, i.e. there is time in the patter to correct estimation errors.

In Mnemonica, Tamariz discusses the obedient cards effect, but he simply suggests ways to reveal the cards, he doesn't give tips on how to enhance your estimations.

I recently read Ortiz' "Last laugh", where the named card is cut during a well-placed joke. Ortiz counts to the card from a break halfway through the deck. This is longer, yet more safe than an estimated cut, and the patter allows for this time.

Do you know of other tricks that offer these built-in safeties?

Forum: Tricks

Doing mem deck work by mind mapping

Mind Mapping is a new technique that substitute calculations by simple steps in a two dimensional mind map (an easy to remember picture of whole stack). Every step counts depending at direction -1, +1, -10 or +10.

For more details you can download for free the book "Mind Mapping for Memorized Decks v. 2.21":

http://www.solka2.privat.t-online.de/memdeck/mindmapping.htm

Warning: This stuff is only for hard cored mem deck nerds.

Forum: General Discussions

m3d-stack

m3d - the "Mind Map Mem Deck", is a stack, which is fast and easy to learn.

m3d was developed by me in 1994 - 1996 in Germany. m3d was a well guarded secret only available for selected magicians.

The m3d was developed as a tool for mind mapping. Mind Mapping is a new technique without calculations in memdeck magic.

m3d cannot be forgotten despite long demonstration interruption or small exercise frequency!

m3d is a completely new approach in memdeck magic theory because m3d-stack is memorized like a simple two-dimensional layout - the so-called "Mind Map".

Once "Mind Map" is visualized you know the relative positions of all card values to each other values immediately.

The m3d-stack is a real memorized deck.

Memorization of m3d does not work by brute force, arithmetical rules or mnemonic words. m3d works by a simple geometrical figure.

m3d is presentable, you can cut the deck. m3d is extremely easy to learn. Once learned, m3d-stack never can be forgotten. The m3d is also re-activatable after long demonstrating breaks.

You can download for free the manuscript:

http://www.solka2.privat.t-online.de/memdeck/m3d.htm

Forum: Other Memorized Stacks

Ortiz' Scams & Fantasies with Cards

I recently went to see the lecture of Darwin Ortiz in Ottawa, on November 1st.

He performed the following effects from his book "Scams & Fantasies with Cards":

1) The last laugh
Nice handling on the "named card magically appears" trick. A named card appears between two red aces. Memorized deck effect. The "hunt" for the card is done on an offbeat moment, after a joke.

2) The color of money
A follow the leader effect, where 10 blacks and 10 reds are placed in front of two poker chips of corresponding colors. The packets are exchanged repetitively, but the right colored cards are shown in front of the poker chips.

3) Appointment in Samarra
Interesting presentation about fate and how we can't escape destiny. A fate card is removed from the deck, placed in an envelope that gets signed and placed in a wallet. The spectator freely chooses a card. The fate card is shown to have vanished from the envelope. The spectator reveals his selection, and guess what, it's the fate card.

4) Hitchcock travelers
Four aces are signed and placed on the table. They travel to the magician's pockets, the tabled cards are revealed as four spectator selections.

5) Ultimate oil & water
An oil and water effect with six cards (apparently). Very cool ending where the shuffled deck is shown separated in blacks and reds, then squared and immediately respread to show alternating blacks and reds.

6) Liar's poker
A princess' card trick type of effect, where each selection is found in the context of being able to tell if a spectator is lying in a card game. In the lecture, Ortiz failed to perform it because he picked up the wrong packet. He was quite amused by that... "that NEVER happens!" :)

7) The new back off
Very clean wildcard effect. Four "misprinted" double-back cards are shown, and one by one, their face appear.

There is a lot more stuff in the book.

It was the first time I saw and read Ortiz, it's quite interesting. Good style, well documented, well illustrated, good psychology. Good material for card enthusiasts.

At the end of the lecture, he did some gambling demonstrations. Nice evening... it was well worth the two hours drive from Montreal :)

Forum: Discussions and Reviews

As some may have noticed, I am having less and less time to write on the Joyalstack Message Board. Since my native language is French, I have to read twice what I wrote in order to be sure it is correctly written.

It is now time for me to appoint one or more moderators. Would you be interested in becoming a moderator for the Joyalstack Message Board or for one of it's forum? If yes (or if you would like to suggest a name), please post a message here.

If you like card magic, if you have good ideas, if you think you can be of help, if sharing knowledge and helping others is of your concern, please let me know.

Forum: News, Comments and Suggestions

Impossible 1 to 52 - Eduardo Kozuch

I just recieved this great card trick from the inventor himself, its a great concept. The spectator names any number from 1 to 52. The cards is handed to the spectator that counts the card up to the chosen number: amazingly that card matches the only card in a envelope that has been in full view all the time. He can deal the cards face up showing 52 different ones... Remember the magician never touches the cards, ever.

This is a extremely clean open prediction. Can it be better?

I give it 9 out of 10.

Easy to do.

Mats

Forum: Open Prediction

Some stacks--e.g., Mnemonica and others--can be gotten into via faro shuffles, runs, and cuts from new deck order. So if one has a shuffled deck and wants to get into the stack, one first gets into NDO, then does the faros, etc. The first step--getting into NDO--is something I can do pretty quickly without even needing a table, or anyway without needing much table space. (First separate red and black, then suits,...) So: going from a shuffled deck to stack order with this sort of stack doesn't require a great deal of time or space (assuming that one is good at faros).

I'm wondering about other stacks--Joyal's or Aronson's, for example. My question for those of you who use these stacks: How *exactly* do you get from a shuffled deck to stack order? Do you first go through the deck looking for card number 1, then 2,... This would seem pretty time consuming. Do you make a lot of piles on a table? What are the steps you take?

Forum: General Discussions

Program for SHoCkeD Joyal Stack

Hi all,

This is my first post here so excuse me if I missed something (I started reading everything but it can be overwhelming). In any case, I wanted everybody to know that I wrote a python program that will quiz the user in the SHoCkeD Joyal stack. It asks both "what card is at position x" as well as "what position is card x at?" That is, you are asked to name cards or name positions, it does both (randomly). Entries can be made with or without caps but need to be in the format like 6S or KH. Position answers are simply the numbers (1, 2, 45, etc.). I'll try and attach an image and if anybody likes it, I can post the code here. I tried writing a simple script to make the CHaSeD order as well, but there are a few little quirks I have yet to work out. The program will be easy to modify (the code is simple), or I can try and make it CHaSeD compatible if there seems to be a lot of demand. To run the program, you need to have Python installed on your computer (python.org). Let me know what you all think.

Lemniscate
Forum: The Joyal Stack

Clocking The Deck

Hi. I have been thinking about ways of "clocking" the deck. The techinque i am doing now is i think from Harry Loyrane.

for ex. If someone took out a red card, i clock the red cards. And i add up all the red cards and drop the 10s. So jacks=1,queen=2,king=3 (since you drop the 10s). and when you are done, you subtract the final # by 12. 12-F = value of card. And than you have to go back through and find out which suit is missing.

Now, I want to find a way to do that but without going through the deck twice. Does anyone know of a way to "clock" the deck from a shuffled deck?

Forum: Other complete stacks
