ID Action Vote 2008 Grant Guidelines

For the 2008 presidential elections, ID Action wants to invest in activities that will encourage Iowans with disabilities to vote on Election Day, November 4, 2008. ID Action will make awards of $500 - $2,000 available. The funds may be used for community get out the vote efforts. Since ID Action is a nonpartisan political action program, the grants may be used for initiatives such as educational workshops, grassroots activities to register Iowans with disabilities to vote, coalition building activities, voter forums, etc. However, the grants may not be used for partisan purposes, such as advocating for a particular political party, candidate or issue. Use your imagination and be creative in your efforts to organize vote-related events! Grants are only available for a limited time, so submit your application early to increase your chances of receiving a grant.

Participant Eligibility / Requirements:

The person submitting the request must be an ID Action participant.

In a letter to ID Action, please provide the following details:

o Explain what specifically the funds will be used for and how your efforts will encourage people with disabilities to go to the polls.

o Explain how the funds will help your efforts and estimate how many people with disabilities you are planning to reach and encourage to vote.

o Provide the date, place and time of the activities / meetings / events.

o Provide background on your planned activities / meetings / events.

o Provide personal daytime and evening contact information.

After the activities / meetings / events, provide a written summary that includes number of people attended, action/activities, outcomes and next steps. (Also, please include any materials produced for the meeting.)

Send to ID Action a copy of all receipts totaling the grant amount.

The activities / meetings / events must take place in Iowa.
While families of people with disabilities and other advocates may participate, attendance must be made up of at least 50 percent of people with disabilities.
During the event / activity / meeting the grantee must acknowledge ID Action and encourage participants to register for ID Action.
All voter outreach activities must be completed by November 4, 2008.

Once a request letter is received, a decision to award the grant will be made in 10 business days or less.

ID Action Vote 2008 Campaign

ID Action implemented a new Caucus 2008 Project early in the election season to increase awareness of and participation in Iowas first-in-the-nation caucuses. While training was an important strategy to increase caucus participation by Iowans with disabilities the centerpiece of the project was a Caucus Guide developed to answer common questions about the Iowa Caucuses, the issues and the candidates. The project included grassroots efforts, targeted media relations and community outreach programs that resulted in increased awareness of and participation in Iowas Caucus.

To build on the momentum of the 2008 presidential caucuses and primaries, ID Action is sponsoring the Vote 2008 campaign offering a variety of activities and resources to engage individuals with disabilities in the political activities leading up to the November elections including:

Voter Captain Program ID Action is seeking a total of 10 Iowans with disabilities from all areas of the state to coordinate regional voting-related activities. These 10 individuals will serve as Voter Captains for their regions from June through November. ID Action will provide training on managing get-out-the-vote efforts at a local level and successful applicants will be reimbursed for their time and effort. Free Voter Trainings Beginning in July, ID Actions Advocacy University will offer Voter Training in a community near you! New voting laws and equipment have made voting in Iowa more accessible than ever. These entertaining, interactive workshops will help Iowans of all abilities get more comfortable with voting, know their rights, and understand the importance of showing up on Election Day. dental care for Title 19 patients

I'd like to write about dental care for Title 19 patients.

I have had some painful experiences dealing with lack of dental coverage for dental procedures.

Title 19 pays for checkups, but not root canals and crowns on back teeth.

Dental care is expensive, yes. But it really is a necessity.

I've called my state senator, written to the governor, and written to a U.S. Senator. The director of the Iowa Department of Human Services wrote me back, and told me he agreed that these benefits should be restored.

But nothing has been done.
