Some businesses welcome recession

According to a new Workforce article, some businesses welcome an economic recession. Career counselors, supermarket owners and discount retailers actually say an economic recession can be good for business.

Those who welcome an economic recession are much fewer than the rest of us who can't afford to fill up our cars or refrigerators. What do you think?

Forum: News

Don't take a loan against your 401(k)

Scary story on Laurie Ruettimann's blog today warning everyone to not touch any retirement benefits, no matter how much you think they will help right now.

She shares a story about a company she once worked for as an HR Generalist. The company allowed people to borrow against their 401(k)s while the company was going through reconstruction. Many employees lost their jobs and employees were forced to pay back their loan within 90 days of termination.

A word to the wise - Don't touch your 401(k)

You can read the post here.

Forum: HR Advice

Motivating through song

I found this great article at Workforce.com about how corporations are using songs to build teamwork and morale. There's even a whole new industry behind the corporate songwriting trend. Companies can hire consultants to come out and help their teams create and perform songs together.

What do you think?
Commuter Incentive Programs

Our company is thinking about bringing in a consultant to start up a commuter incentive program. In our research however, it is unclear as to whether we are REQUIRED to have a commuter incentive program. Some documentation indicates that employers with 250 or more employees are required to have them - does this mean at each job site, or total in the company?

Help!

Forum: Miscellaneous

They Called To Say I Was Hired --- But THEN !

I recently had a 2-hour interview with ColganAir in Manassas, Va. Several days later, a HR rep called and congratulated me on being selected for the position, told me to report to work on May 12th, and said the offer package was sent out the door that morning, to be delivered by FedEx... I anxiously waited for the FedEx truck for 2 days, then today I decided to call the airline, after the offer package did not arrive.

After being juggled around to various people in the recruiting and HR departments, finally I spoke to a person who had me on speakerphone. He said, he was sorry but they were on a hiring freeze and had been for a while, and that the job offer was not valid.

HOW can they do this? Also, they had collected every part of my personal history for security clearances and a FAA clearance (financial/credit history, everything they have collected about me).

If they knew they were on a hiring freeze, why interview people to begin with? The people who kept giving me the run-around were the exact people I met at my interview, so how can there be a so called 'misunderstanding'?!

I am so upset with how this company works, and there is nothing I can do is there ??
Forum: Hiring and recruiting

A job offer and then taking it back!?

I need everyone's opinions on this because I'm quite frustrated!! So I went for a job interview this afternoon just north of where I live, about 30 minutes away for an Administrative Asst position with a small company. Anywho, things were looking good... the interview went well for the most part, it wasn't the job I really wanted but it paid really well and it worked well as far as hours. When they called to offer me the job, I asked if I could possibly talk it over with my parents, etc for the next day and that I'd get back to them by tomorrow afternoon or early Thursday morning. The lady I spoke to (it's a wife / husband company + one other associate) said, "Sure! That's understandable!" I've also been talking with another company that pays just a little better but like an hour less per week over these guys I spoke to this afternoon.
I had the interview for this other place yesterday but I won't hear back from them until tomorrow as she's out of town until then. Basically I didn't want to tell the company "Sorry but I'm talking to other companies so can you wait?" So the company that offered me the job called me back a little later this afternoon and said, "We've decided to offer the job to the next person down the list. If you're having doubts or felt something in the interview, then you won't be happy here!" and I said, "No the reason I wanted to wait until tomorrow was because I'm talking with another company and they're not able to get back to me until tomorrow afternoon" and she's like, "Ohhh! Well sorry". How unprofessional is that!? I didn't want to blurt out that I was talking with another company and that I'm waiting for them as I mean really, it's none of their business. I can understand if they chose the next person down the list say by tomorrow afternoon but less than an hour after they made the offer? How tacky is that?
The other thing I was going to mention was during the job interview itself, they asked me "Do you have a boyfriend?". How is this part of the job?? How does it relate to it? I sat there stunned thinking in my head "Ok, I need a job and really it's none of their business but... ??"

Forum: Hiring and recruiting

Checking Criminal Records On the Rise

It is now common for a job applicant to have been raised in Japan, educated in the U.K. and now seeking employment in the U.S., according to Michael Rosen who heads the screening division. As a result, employers are carefully vetting candidates for entry level, senior management, and positions in between, he said. Employers are recognizing that screening job candidates at all levels is more complex and vital to the well-being of the organization, Rosen added.

Full article available at: http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/article.aspx?Feed=BW&Date=20080422&ID=8519201&Symbol=MMC

Forum: Hiring and recruiting
