Buddy Curtis and Higher Plane Productions at Joe Nall

I just watched the trailer of Higher Plane Productions from Joe Nall.

It looks like Buddy is dipping the entire tail section of a large Edge/Extra in the lake.

Barry is there too standing behind Buddy.

http://higherplaneproductions.com/media/JoeNall2008Tribute-H264.mov

The shot is about 1/2 way through the film.

It is a very large download. SO be prepared to wait awhile for it. 60Megs I believe.

Forum: General Discussion

Flint River RC Club - tip for site upgrade?

I'm new to the RC aerial world and I live in Rochelle, Ga. and I'm avidly looking for instructors, teachers, and people to meet who are also into flying.

Would it be possible for whoever maintains/updates the page for the Flint River Club that flies at Lake Blackshear to add a daily updated "weather report" icon/blurb (especially for the Sunday fly-ins) ? It's about a 30 mile ride for me, and for example, today (Sun July 13, 2008) it was BEAUTIFUL weather here in Rochelle, but I just happened to make a call to a friend in Cordele while trying to prep my plane and I found out that it was raining cats-and-dogs over there.... it was a real bummer b/c I was really stoked to see and meet some of the local flyers. I'm glad I just happened to make a call and find out the weather was in the dumps before I loaded up all my toys and made the trip.

Can someone add this to the page so that those of us who have to drive a fair distance won't make any wasted trips?

I'm really looking forward to meeting people at the field in the club and I hope that the weather looks better next Sunday.

Just my $0.02 worth and I think it would make an excellent addition to a great flying location.

Forum: General Discussion

Screw-In

After the last "Stick Contest," I made an observation.......The new Ultra Stick is lighter, faster, and more maneuverable than the old Tiger Stick. However the Tiger Stick is way more survivable and durable.

With the Ultra Stick, it almost seemed that if you misjudged your AOA while landing/touching at a high rate of speed, not only did the gear get ripped out, but the entire center section decintagrates!

I've been looking at Don Pruitts' Stick for a while. It looks like it used to be a Tiger Stick, that now has a foam wing and is built like a "TANK!" Six nylon bolts hold the landing gear in place and looks like it's designed to snap off before it damages the center section. Pretty neat I thought, but I decided to re-design and make my own Stick while using the Ultra-Stick as a guide.

First and foremost I did use a Stock Ultra Stick wings, and tail, but the fuse is completely new and my own.

One inch behind the Wing Saddle to the firewall is completely 1/4 light ply build like a tank in the dimensions of the Ultra-Stick. Well, not completely. Just the formers, and sides. The bottom is 1/8 light ply, and the hatch in front of the wing is balsa. The hatch is removable. There is a 1/4 inch reg ply in place inside the fuse where the gear will be supported.

Aft of the wing is 1/8 balsa married to the ply fuse and stock Ultra-Stick tail Section from a previous Stick was used.

The Wing is also from a previous Stick and gas been repaired. The wing fits like a normal Ultra-Stick Wing, however, instead of bolting the wing down, I inserted 1/4 dowel nipples to hold in place and the wing is held down via Rubber Bands.

The gear itself is bolted to a seperate 2 inch X 6 inch piece of 1/4 ply that has 1/4 inch dowels nipples that fit into the fuse. The assembly is held on via rubber bands.

The hatch has a built in "Bomb Drop" bucket.

"Stick-N-Stein" is ready for test flying.

Screw-Out

Forum: Tiger Stick

I can barely describe it, I got home and feel the need to bathe. I flew my new ( how can I say this?? ) SLIMER heli. And enjoyed it, oh the humanity.
To Heli or Not to Heli ?

My father-in-law recently gave me a Hirobo Shuttle Heli (old style, not sure of the model #; it's about 10 years old) with a glow engine (.30-.40 i think), all 4 mounted servos (Futaba FS128's), gyro, flight battery, Futaba 7 channel transmitter/receiver, chargers, starter, basically the everything you could possibly need. It's in all in good shape. The servo's are operational and appear to work great (I've tested them and adjusted them as best I could according to the manual).Overall the craft is in BEAUTIFUL physical shape with just a small ding and scuff here and there.

Here's the catch: I've never flown a heli before. Or for that matter, even a trainer plane.... BUT he ALSO gave me a Sr. Falcon (old school, 69" WS) with a .61 glow engine (I think it's on it's 3rd wing --- he had a few mishaps...), but everything seems to check out fine and the control rods are all in good shape and move smoothly. He was pulling the servos out of the Heli and mounting them into the Falcon when he wanted to fly it, so I know the FS128 Futaba servos are enough to keep it under control and up in the air (and of, course the transmitter/receiver are swappable also). I don't have enough $$$ to buy 4 more servos for the plane (throttle, aileron, rudder, elevator) so that's really out of the question for the moment.

My question is: Should I keep the Heli "in tact" and try to learn to fly it, or should I pull the electronics and mount them into the Falcon and start there? Part of me would love the challenge of flying a heli, but I'm not naive enough to think that this is even CLOSE to easy! I'm on a MASSIVELY tight budget right now, so busting blades on the Heli would ground it instantly and indefinitely.... I've heard the Falcon was pretty easy to fly and exceptionally forgiving ( it's got a nice symetrical wing). So is "starting out" on a mid-size Heli just a fever dream or what?

The bottom line is that I just want to get SOMETHING in the air :o) I've been reading everything from the FAA flight instruction manual to websites, magazines, and just about anything I can get my hands on related to flying (plus I do know a pretty fair amount about basic flight theory and airplane functionality -my 1st job out of college was building systems for FAA certified Level C & D simulators for Gulfstreams, Citations, MD-80's, etc...)

Any input, tips, advice, or thoughts in general are welcome. Sorrry for the long post, I've got alot of stuff to figure out ! :oD

Forum: Beginners Forum

Glider Day will be next Saturday, June 28. What is Glider Day? It will be an informal gathering of pilots of all types of gliders and sailplanes. How did this get started? I think by Richard Scarborough. He has been flying a Gentle Lady with .049 power but just built a hand launched glider. This new glider uses the discus launch technique and Richard has been having a ball with it. Other guys have seen it fly and are interested and the talk on the forum suggested a day to get together and fly gliders. So here we are, next Saturday. If you have a glider of any type, or are interested, come on out.

Don't forget the Stick Contest this Saturday, June 21.

Take care, Mac

Forum: Upcoming Events

New to the sport and looking for a trainer AC

Looking for a trainer alot of models have the word trainer in the name but they really don't look like they would work. I'm 55, I've flown sailplanes (full scale) about 20 years ago. I would like to try RC. I was going to get the electric NexStar from Hobbico, the one with the PA, the wing looks flat and wide it has leading edge extensions and flaps/brakes. I saw a T-34 from e-flight with the same, has anyone reading this had any experience or knowledge of this "trainer" aircraft?

Forum: Beginners Forum
