Angelino or Angeleno

Angelino or Angeleno? If you have not noticed, there has been a difference of opinion about the proper spelling of Angelino Heights. The Angelino with the an "i" is how the city of Los Angeles spells the name as does the EPHS. But Bruce Lash of the Angeleno Heights Trolley group and other residents say it should be spelled with two "e"s. He asks the EPHS to recognize this as the proper spelling.

"Personally, I would like to see it spelled in its original and correct Spanish language form. But, at least lets have it spelled as close to the way that it was meant to be spelled by the founders of our neighborhood," Lash writes.

What do you think?

Forum: History

History (?) and Finished Carpenter

Hello. I am trying to find out any information about the house I live in. It's at 1566 Parmer Avenue (cross street is Morton). There is a picture at the Post Office on Glendale Blvd. that shows our house in the early 1900's and there are not many other houses around it. That leads me to believe the original owner of our house was someone respectable. If so, we're just really curious to know more about our house and it's history. Have any suggestions?

Also, I am a finished carpenter and I really enjoy refinishing floors and doing detailed restoration. Please call or Email me if you're looking for a reasonably priced carpenter who has a passion for preserving Echo Park.

Thanks,
Benny
323-395-8047
audiomekhanik@hotmail.com

Forum: Restoration

VERY specific Historical Photo Request

Hello,
After reading the blog entry about the uncovering of the Echo's arches and seeing those great historical photographs, I was wondering if anyone could help me find images of some very specific locations.

I need:

The intersection of Temple and Glendale, looking SOUTH, BEFORE 1930. I need to see the building at 1542 Temple, now a storage lot for Prestige Auto Body.

The intersection of Sunset and McDuff, looking NORTH, BEFORE 1950. I need to see 1306 McDuff, now the parking lot of A1 Warehouse Market.

Temple Street, between Patton and Douglas, looking NORTH, BEFORE 1940. I need to see 1413 Temple, which is next to that huge new condo that was recently built, across the street from the EP library.

In all cases, I have photographs that are either looking the wrong way or taken at the wrong time period. I'd be interested in any photo that even partially shows those addresses, from any angle. For example, I know many of you lived around Laveta Terrace, and you might have an old family photo that shows the area down towards Sunset as well.

I've looked in all the usual places (archives, lapl, ucla, etc.). But since I don't remember seeing those shots of the Echo before, I obviously haven't seen everything from this era in my searches. If anyone has seen any of these images (or knows of new places I could look) I would appreciate the help!
I know this is a long shot, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Forum: History

Building at Temple and Echo Park

I am researching architect Howard E Jones who, in 1908, designed a building at Temple St and Echo Park Ave. It was said to face Echo Park and Children's Playground. The building was to have seven stores and twenty apartments. An article, which includes a drawing of the proposed structure, appears in the Oct. 11, 1908 issue of the Los Angeles Times, page V22. The owner was Charles M. Stimson.

Does the building still exist? Does the intersection still exist? Is there a photo? Anything on the architect?

Forum: History

i just wanted you guys to know that i grew up on belmont and bellvue ave. above the lake, over glendale blvd. and when me and my friend would play in the backyard of my grandmas house,we would throw stones into the lake from it...this was in the mid 1980's,and one day we were wondering "why" do they call "echo park" echo park? well we decided to start screaming in the back yard...and the truth is,that.... "echo" does come back to you! seconds after that yell. so this is true. i have experienced it for myself. so now this should be documented. go to the top of the stairs and scream. you will here your echo! and also 4th of july fireworks echo aswell.

Forum: History
