Octoberfest 5k

Flyer announced "sleeveless race shirt" would be given to all participants, but regular cotton sleeved shirts were given instead. I was looking for the race shirt - as I believe was used in prior events.

A much earlier start would be nice - say 8 or 9 latest. Very sunny and hot at an 11 start.

Race for the Cure Question

I am always one that will run for a good cause and the Race for the Cure is just that type of event. I was looking at the info on the Komen NE Ohio Affiliate website and saw two things that made me wonder...

1st) Under "About this race" there is info on the run and the walk stating the following:

For those who like to run, a 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) Race will be held for men and women. For walkers, the Race offers a non-competitive, untimed 1-Mile Walk. Those who want to walk a longer distance may join the runners in the 5 kilometer Race.

2nd) Under "Race Day Details" and then "Race Day Schedule" they have the following info:

9:15 am Competitive 5K Run

9:30 am 5K Race/Walk

9:45 am 1-Mile Walk

The point being is there going to be a competitive run and then a 5k race/walk, then the 1 mile....? There is no other info on this on the site.

If there is a real competitive 5k this might be worth doing....?

Does anyone know what is going on here?

OROC was a very fun race and a great cause!

One thing to think of for next year as this has gotten to be a much bigger event is to have a separate start for the runners and walkers. Either that or make the start area bigger... another idea would be to go to a chip timing system.

Loved the coarse and it was nice to run thru that part of downtown.

I have written a song about running called 4 Runners Only. It is a hip hop song that talks about how fun running is. I talk a lot about the runner's high, give fan appreciation. I also mention Fleet Feet and Achilles Running Shop shoestores thanking them for good service. And finally on the last verse I throw in a romantic line. I thought of that after I read in Runner's World how running can be like a date for some people as some couples have met through running. Here is the link to the song.

Ohio City Run Question

Did the Ohio Run & Crawl this past weekend... had fun and the actual run was great. Did have one comment - I understand the weather and this caused things to be a little mixed-up at the start, but something was missing.... what happened to our goodie bags?

I know I don't do runs for the shirt and the extras, but everything that had been talked about for this event said it included the following:

What You Get

Short sleeved t-shirt (OK not bad)
Goody bag (did not happen????)
Post race refreshments (OK water and fruit)
Live music (I am thinking weather)
Post race pub crawl (not well mapped out)

Just wondering why after paying $25 for the race this did not happen (I know I could have paid a few days earlier and saved $5).

About the Lake Erie Island Fest

If you haven't been to a volleyball tournament on Middle Bass Island, you don't know what you are missing. This is the 8th Annual tournament on the island and it grows in popularity each year. Unique to the volleyball world are the amenities offered for the same price as other tournaments. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that your tournament shirts are included in the price. There is a players party that includes food and beer on Friday night. Dont forget to dip your feet in the pool or relax under the stars in the hot tub both right on the premises. Yes its hot in June and August, so your bottled water is on us too. Maybe an adult beverage is more your speed? No worries There is a convenient store with a large beverage selection right across the street from the field. And since the tournament is on private property, you can enjoy them at the tournament without worry of a container inspection. Dance the day away at the tournament to the non-stop tunes and then continue the grooves at St. Hazards afterwards where your first beer on Saturday is on us.

Other Perks
All nets are centrally located in one large flat field that can accommodate over 250 teams. You wont be scattered all over the island playing on mounds and in divots. Finding your friends wont be an all day adventure.

If you want to stay on Middle bass there is a Caribbean style resort there called St. Hazards. They offer our crowd a discount on their accommodations. They have camping, small cabins, small houses and condominiums. If you prefer to stay at Put-in-Bay and play, you can catch the Sonny-S over to the Middle Bass for the tournament.

Having trouble getting 6 people to commit? We know how hard it is so we are introducing coed 4s this year.

Have a spouse who doesnt play volleyball? Dont worry, so do I. New this year is Cornhole for all those non-volleyball people. What other sport can you hold a beer in one hand and throw a beanbag with the other? Cornhole includes all the amenities of volleyball.

Ever wonder where everyone went after other tournaments? Not a problem here, everyone goes to St. Hazards to relax, swim, cookout and enjoy the non-stop entertainment both inside and out. And St. Hazards offers spectacular drink specials for the volleyball and Cornhole crowd. Ask about your drink specials on other islands, you might pay less than $8 a beer after standing in line for an hour.

I try and run in 5 or 6 races a year (I figure someone has to be the anchor). Just thought I would send a note to those who volunteered and sponsored the WSCC race this morning and let them know that it was by far one of my favorite races. Everything was well done. Great t-shirt, gift bag, course (I loved seeing the homes and buildings along this course), band, food, and participants. Thanks, and hopefully you continue to have this event.

Solon yates 5K-was it actually a 3.5 miler?

It was hot and it seemed to go on longer...and worse yet, my time was about 2.5 minutes slower than my former 5K times.

I heard that it was actually 3.5 miles from a volunteer, which would account for the time loss...and others were saying the same. It seemed like distance from mile 1 to mile 2 went on forever!

Anyone know for sure?

First Place 5k

2.5 miles into this 5k a train come by and only the top 5 runners got across the tracks.... About 3 minutes or so, the train passes and the pack of runners take off again. Kinda comical in the big scheme of things. I've done hundreds of races and I now have the pleasure of adding this to the list of things I've never experienced.
Just curious though.... Did the local community map the course or was it the "fault" of Hermes? Seems like the locals should have been more aware of the train schedule. Not a big deal, thanks for the new experience.... Shoulda seen the looks on the faces of the people in the cars on the opposite side; Once the train passed and the gate goes up they were treated to about 50 runners making a mad dash.. Priceless.
