Hogscald float

Am thinking abt going back out to Hogscald this next week, anyone wanna come along? Bring a camera! With the lake full at 1129, we can flaot all the way back to the crystal clear falls..this water is COLD! but sure is pleasant to the eyes and ears. Am thinking wed or thurs, depending on the wx..hopefully the sun will be out. Will post later where to meet, will take the back roads in (5 miles of dirt road) off hwy 127.

Colorado trip

In Sedptember I have organized a five day backpacking trip in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the edge of Great Sand Dunes Natn'l Park in Colorado. The trip will include base camping on the Sand Creek lakes at 10,000 ft. and summiting the 13,000+ footers close by. The scenery is like no other and the experience is going to be one of a lifetime. As of now there are three going and would welcome a couple more. Any questions on dates and interest please reply.

Fireworks paddleing

If anyone else goes out to paddle tonight to watch the fireworks on Beaver lake, Please be very careful and use all of your brightest position lights and stay out of the Go-fast boats way. Defensive boating is the safest course when there are that many folks out there. Many of the folks in power boats will be infrequent boaters at best with little experience boating at night and more than one of them will probably be inebriated. I heard several conversations last year by boat drivers saying that all they do is follow the person in front of them as they can't see anything. Scarey enough when a sober person says this but even scarier when they say that with a way over the limit slurred speech pattern. My advice to anyone in a canoe or kayak would be to keep to the extreme sides where the big boats don't dare to go, (but not close enough to get dashed up against the shoreline, bluffs, or into any bushes) except when crossing the channels and then time your crossing till a lower flow in the traffic. It would be worth waiting a while till most of the big boats have cleared out, sort of like a movie theater or stadium crowd, or picking a route that doesn't require you to cross traffic. Last year there were about 400 boats on the water at the site I went to south of point 11. It was a steady stream of them when everybody started to head home and only 1 or 2 ranger/sheriff's office type boats out there that I saw to handle the drunks and other violators. The waves were as high as a foot tall from some of the big boats and even then, I was on the opposite side away from almost all the traffic. Spray skirt for a kayak in these conditions and a bailer for an open canoe should be considered a must.

As on any water trip in Arkansas,

Wear your life jackets,
have all appropriate lights if at night,
no glass containers,
floatation huggies for any beverages not in a cooler,
mesh trash bag in your possession that is tied in,
have a strap or lock on any coolers so that they can not accidentally be opened if you turn over

and you should have a good fun safe time without incurring the wrath of any law enforcement types. Just being out there in a paddle craft at night in heavy traffic areas may be reason enough for you to be inspected even if you have lights, so I'd recommend you not take any adult beverages.

Hwy71 ride from West Fork 7-5-08

We have a group meeting to ride from the West Fork park 7am on Saturday. We will ride to Mountainburg and on the way there or back take in the new Lake Fort Smith State Park. This is an all levels ride. Don't worry about your speed, if you can do the mileage, come join us. If you just want to do part of the ride come join us. Most of us are just moderate riders.

Hello all,
I did my first triathlon on June 22 (Ozark Valley Triathlon) and have only been swimming since Feb. and riding since April. I am looking for people to ride or swim with who are new or experienced to get tips and support from. I am going to try to attend the group ride on July 5, but I'm not too sure I can make it 40-45 miles!

OZARK ROADIES RIDE SATURDAY, JULY 5, 8:00 A.M.

The Roadies will be riding out of Elkins Saturday, July 5, at 8:00 a.m. We'll take Black Oak Road out through Sulphur City, then 43 South to Old 71 and on to the Brentwood rest stop, for a total of approx. 40-45 miles.

We'll be meeting at a private business on Hwy 16 E in Elkins. Coming from Fayetteville, take the first road to the left after Harris Community Road (on the right). You will see a large log building on the left, with a large parking lot.

There will be no scheduled rides on July 12 and July 19. Some of the Roadies will be in Colorado biking around the Frisco/Dillon area, Glenwood Springs Canyon, and then attending the Ozark Society encampment in the Mt. Princeton National Forest. We'll also try to get in a ride at Lake Turquoise and at Leadville.

A lot of you have looked at our posts, so come out and check us out. We are a very welcoming group riding for fun and fitness.

Group rides this weekend

A couple of rides over the next few days:

1. We will be having a ride at Devils Den, Saturday, 28th, that will leave at 9:00 am (more details to follow today)

2. Our regularly scheduled ride, which takes place on Mondays will be Monday, 30th at 6 pm at Lake Fayetteville. We will meet in the softball field parking lots. Lake Fayetteville trail is 6 miles, and some will do one lap and others multiple laps. The first lap is typically at an easy pace, depending on what individuals want to do.

Lewis and clark rides this weekend will include:

Fayetteville - Saturday 8:00 am, leaving from the Walton Arts Center Parking Lot - north of Flying Burrito; The group will be riding the State Road Race Course at a moderate pace. (Will have mileage estimate today);

Rogers - Saturday, 10:00 am; Leave from the Rogers store; This is an easy paced ride, between 12 - 14 mph; The group typically does about 15 - 25 miles, with options for shorter or longer routes depending on what individuals want to do.

Rogers - Sunday, 1:00 am; Leave from the Rogers store; Easy pace; (Will have mileage estimate today).

Time to get out and work on those trailswe need a few good hands to help with some touch up trail maintenance. Al and I intend on working the sweet cool mornings of July 12^th & 13^th. Our intentions for the day are to work a few of the Ruff spots along the new War Eagle Loop Trail. We plan on starting at about 7:30am and working until???

The Roadies will be riding out of Savoy this Sat. the 28th at 8:30 a.m. The ride will include going to the Prairie Grove Battlefield, and the total mileage will be 40-45 miles. To get to Savoy from Fayetteville, take Hwy. 16W toward Lake Wedington. Just before you go over the Illinois River bridge, there will be a sign on the right that says "Savoy". Follow the road over a bridge and the road will bear to the left. You will see a white building and a gravel parking lot.
