Hybrid spinner/rope lures

I've been having some success when i go home to visit my dad in Baxley, GA on the Altamaha River with a Hybrid spnner/rope lure I made. I just pull the skirt off and tie about eight inches of rope on then smear some plumbing glue around the wrap. I keep the hook, but flatten the barb. It helps keep the rope on, especially after a couple fish. Silver willow leaf blades and red headed spinner have been most successful. I also dip the rope in red garlic dye. Doesn't work in my pain the rear river here in Valdosta, though. Try it out. let me know if you have any success.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k169/mttoler/Hyrbridlure.jpg

Team Rough Neck, Captain,

Matt T

www.myspace.com/teamroughneck
Forum: Gar Fishing

The Bill Engvall Dork Fish

I think I caught Bill EnGvall's Dork Fish on Tuesday the 15th. Caught on a corndog as you might guess. Rope lure actually and I'm guessing it got it's beak damaged when it was very young. It came right out of the water and looked up at me and said "I'm a Dork Fish"!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moY9aNiYBHI

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u19/dhink256/GarJuly13th2008005-Resized.jpg
Forum: Gar Fishing

More Lure Testing... 6 Gar Caught

I went Garin' up the creek for longnose and Spotted Gar...

I left 30 minutes late so I knew I had 2 hours to fish before the heat would run me off.
As got the the spot I normally start at there were NO gar anywhere... I could not even see them surfacing way out in front like you normally can. So I idled the boat a bit further to try to cover more water and find the gar. I found a small school and began fishing with a yellow 1/2oz Gar Max. Still not any Gar surfacing in the number they normally are.

After a short while of cruising looking for a Gar a nice Spotted Gar surfaced near the boat..... short cast.... FISH ON!! This fish though average size fought HARD, bowing by rod over as it tried to plunge to the depths...
I got a video rather than a still pic as I was fishing by my self.
I'll have to post it later as Uptube is down...

I did get this pic of a Spotted Gar with the Gar Max in it's snout.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x285/caneycreekfisherman/100_2004.jpg

After catching a few smaller Spotted Gar I came to a area where the longnosers started surfacing, so I put down the rod with the Gar Max on it for the rod with a 7 inch Rope Lure.

I was going slowly along when I saw what I thought was a large Spotted Gar cruising along the surface... I grabbed my Gar Max rod and made a perfect cast and I saw the gar lunge forward and grab the lure... I then set the hook and all heck broke loose. The Gar started OWNING ME with a powerful run then a high jump. I then saw I miss ID'd the gar... It was not a Large Spot, but a small Alligator Gar! Then ir hit me.... I'm alone... No one to help boat the Gar. Uh Oh! I was forced to fight the Strong, Angry Gator Gar in and use a small net I use for landing Spotted Gar.
I was able to hook and land the Gator Gar on a yellow 1/2oz Gar Max!
I got a video of the Gar too but youtube is down at the moment.

I ended up catching 5 Spotted Gar and 1 Gator Gar!

Till next time!
Dustin
http://www.snaggletoothluresandrigs.com/
Forum: Gar Fishing

On one of the In-Fisherman shows I heard Mr. Kirkland say something about Gator Gar not being able to go down to the depths or something like that...

So.....
using rope lures

I guess me and rope lures don't work out. I have no luck with them at all. Even when i sight fish for gar and toss the bait and few feet in front of the fish they just ignore it. I have caught gar before while fishing for bowfin but not on purpose, they usually get tangled in my line or i snag them. Are there certain colors I should use down here in Florida? Also is there a certain way to swim the bait?

thanks
Nick V
Forum: Gar Fishing

Several Questions About Gar Bait

I have a few questions regarding baits and rigging for gator gar.

I have a good idea of what to use for bait, however getting it is my problem.

How do you guys catch 1-2# carp, buffalo, etc to use for cut bait?
As of right now im having to use perch because its all me and my friend seem to be able to catch. I have a cast net, and a sane net that I can use. Also, what kind of trebles are you guys using, and I am looking for a very specific answer to the hook questions. i.e. 2/0 mustad muskie hooks. (Name, size, brand, model.) As of right now, in three trips targeting gator gar I have caught 2, one of them 54" and the other 66" in length.
Forum: Gar Fishing

Caught my first bowfin

I had bought some new lures for trying to catch some pike. I fish in upstate NY on Lake Champlain. I went out this past Sunday at about 1 in the afternoon. It was a rainy overcast day. I had been casting out for about 20 minutes when I felt a light hit or tug on the lure. About 2 seconds later, the fish hit the lure hard and I hooked him. I assumed it was a pike, but when I brought him closer to shore I realized it was a bowfin. I ended up landing him, but he broke my rod in half. Teach me to use a light weight spinning rod:D He put up a good 4-5 minute fight before I was able to bring him in. The bowfin was 23 inches long. Using the tables, he equated to about a 4 1/2 pounder. I would have let him go, but my son loves fishing and chose to stay home that day because it was raining. SO, I had to bring the fish home to show him. I did fillet the bowfin and ate him so it didnt go to waste. They are not my favorite fish to eat. The meat seemed to almost break apart and be mushy to me. I do have to admit though that I think the bowfin has hooked another angler here. That fish put up the best fight I've ever had in a fish. From now on though I'll be doing catch and release. I don't eat fish very much anyway so just about every fish I catch I let go. Thanks for a great site here and I hope to see you all around.
Forum: Bowfin Fishing

Todays Lure Testing...... 2 longnosers.... (no pics)

Well, all weekend I've been planing on running a short ways up the creek to a place I know as a lot of Spotted and Longnose Gar. I had planed the trip so that I could do some testing with my concept Spotted Gar lure, and rope lures.

I lost two Longnosers at the boat on my rope lures, and later caught 2 longnosers on my Concept Spotted Gar lure I have now dubbed "Gar Max" (coming soon). I also lost a fair amount of Spotted Gar on the Gar Max. I think I need to down size the hooks a tad.

Most all the longnosers would just follow the rope lure, but then take off at top speed. I tried a 5,6, and 7 inch lure. What could I be doin' wrong?

I think I'm going to head out in a bit and fish for Alligator Gar.

Dustin
Snaggletooth Lures & Rigs
Forum: Gar Fishing

I've been looking through the pictures on the site and I noticed that most of the bowfin that are posted are slim. The bowfin down here in Florida are really fat (making them heavy fighters).
