Life on Tinian R&R

On Tinian ... did the 509th guys get to go on any R&R to Australia? I have a V-44
knife of which my father told the story of being given to him by Chuck Sweeney. By the time Sweeney may have made it to the Australian area my dad had been awarded a DFC, an Air Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. He also had done
a stint as flight engineer on MacArthurs plane Bataan. He was known to upper
command staff in the Air Corp .
He tells about being approached by Sweeney in the nightlife district of either Cairns or Townsville. He tells how Sweeney told him about the posibility of espionage going on and asked dad to keep his eyes open for any civilian types who may be buying too many drinks and asking too many questions of intoxicated US personnel. Dad says he saw and talked with Sweeney on 4 occasions. Sweeney knew dad was a flight engineer and gave him the green horn handle Collins knife stating he knew enlisted weren't issued these knives.
Hence my question about the "secret 509TH" doing R&R to Australia. My dad was Tech Sgt. Clarence Maham ..418 combat hours ..163 combat missions 22nd Troop
Carrier Squadron .. C-47 Dakotas.

Thanks for any info....

Bart Maham Richmond, Virginia

Forum: Post Your Question Here!

A fairly high level DOL official informed me today that Ann Jones (Seattle DEEOIC) is no longer with the DOL. Of course that is very good news for all current and future Seattle claimants (as anyone who's read my previous posts about that witch instantly realizes).

Whether Jones was fired, forced to resign, or quit on her own terms I don't know. I do know that she would've been terminated years ago if her employer had been an ethics-minded private sector company.

Forum: E.E.O.I.C.P.A.

People who worked in MED Washington offices

My mother, Alice B. Watts (Kelley) was recruited out of high school in Southwestern PA to do clerical work in Gen. Groves Washington, DC offices of the MED from 1942 to 1946. I am in search of anyone who worked there (or their survivors) who might have memories of my mother. I also have a few pictures I would be happy to share with anyone who might be able to identify the people in them. And would be happy to receive copies of pictures anyone else has from those offices, especially if my mother is in them. I would also be interested to know if anyone has family stories about a box of Trinitite that was brought to those offices after the successful test of the bomb. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
Mark Kelley

Forum: Welcome to Our Manhattan Project Community Message Board

chronic and acute exposures

Does anyone on this forum understand the significance of the terms
chronic and acute exposures as they are used in the dose reconstruction?
Say for example, if a workers has 12 years of acute exposures and 8 of chronic, how does that fit into the overall DR?
To me a layperson, it would seem that 12 years of acute exposures are alarming! But the DR is below 50% so the PoC isn't justified.
I believe these terms should be explained to the claimant, would you agree?

Forum: E.E.O.I.C.P.A.

B. F. Shaw employment records

I need advice too. After a "final" hearing a year ago this past Jan. and the case having been sent back to Jacksonville, I am now being asked to furnish proof that my father worked in Savannah in 1952. He worked at Y-12 and X-10 from 1943 to 1959 and I have a great deal of info on that. It is my understanding that he went to Savannah for B. F. Shaw. How do I confirm this? Also, is it possible that there's a list of employees who might have been there at that time.

I don't know why after all these years this should even be an issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm actually being asked to provide affidavits from co-workers of his which is probably not possible. It is their contention that Social Security records would only confirm he worked for the company, not that he was at SRS.

Forum: E.E.O.I.C.P.A.

Survivor compensation if worker has already received Part E....

Just trying to get some discussion going... I've never seen a site get this number of hits yet go days on end without a single new post. It's been five or six days since the last post, maybe longer.

Anyway, I'm quite likely going to be involved with the following situation and was wondering if anyone has dealt with something similar.... A very ill former (pancreatic cancer) has already received Part B ($150K) and had his Part E impairment evaluation performed about a month ago (I don't yet know of any results). If he lives long enough to be paid say $200,000 in impairtment compensation, does anyone know if his wife will still be eligible for Part E survivor compensation when he passes away?
***Believe it or not, $200K is a low guess... that would be what he'd receive for an 80% impairment rating ($2500 for every 1% of whole body impairment). I've read three other final decisions where a terminal patient was rated above 90% (91%, 94%, 96%).

If the wife would be eligible in the above scenario, I know it would be for no more than $50K due to the fact $400,000 is the maximum aggregate compensation allowable for claim(s) filed based on the employment/illness of one former worker.

The rules just sometimes make no sense whatsoever.... The worker's impairment payment becomes null and void if he dies prior to the money making it into his account. The only exception to that rule: Survivor(s) can choose to accept the impairment compensation a deceased worker would've received if "his or her death was solely caused by a non-covered illness or illnesses." In other words, if the worker dies of a heart attack prior to receiving a 90% impairment rating payment, his surviving spouse will receive the $225,000 he would've received (instead of the $125,000 she would've received if worker's death was caused by a covered condition). But if that same worker dies from an EEOICPA-covered disease prior to the impairment payment arriving, the $225,000 decision immiediately becomes null and void and the spouse has to file a survivor claim/wait two or three months to receive $100K less ($125,000).

Click the below link to read a Final Decision that will make you see just how relevant the above can be.... DOL tried to wire $240,000 on 6/29/06 based on a 96% impairment rating. The account numbers were supposedly screwed up and thus the wiring failed. The worker died two days later (July 1) and the second wiring made it into his account on July 6. But once the DOL found out he had died prior to the money actually being deposited, the DOL took back the $240K (reversed the transfer). Then the spouse appealed their ruling and paid who knows how much to a liar for hire (aka attorney) to come in and butt heads with the DOL over the wiring mess, etc. But he failed...... DOL stuck by its decision to vacate the $240K decision and the spouse was forced to settle on $125K Part E survivor compensation (and had to wait about 10 months to get it because of all the time taken up by the appeals process). http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/owcp/eeoicp/Decisions/GenericDecisions/DecisionsRef/10055714-2007--20070411.htm

Forum: E.E.O.I.C.P.A.
