Hip-hop 'wrong' for Glastonbury

Noel Gallagher has criticised the decision to have a hip-hop act headlining the Glastonbury Festival.

The Oasis guitarist said having rapper Jay-Z at the festival was the reason tickets had not sold out this year.

He said it was "wrong" to have a hip-hop headliner and added that organisers had changed things too much.

There were 100,000 tickets sold for Glastonbury on the first day, but in past years all tickets had sold out in a matter of hours.

Gallagher said: "If it ain't broke don't fix it. "If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

"Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?'

"I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Oasis headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1995 and 2004, with the event selling out on both occasions.

Gallagher also rubbished recent stories saying Oasis were ready to "do a Prince" and have a residency at London's O2 Arena. "We'll never play the O2," he said. "We went there to see Led Zeppelin and to be honest the gig was fantastic, but it was the most soul destroying venue I've ever been to.

"And much to our manager and agent's disappointment, we came back and said we would never play there.

"So it means we are going to have to do 640 nights at Earl's Court, I would have thought.

"It's too Americanised for me, and it's too far away. Any gig you can get to by boat that hasn't got a beach is wrong."

He did confirm that Oasis' seventh studio album had been completed.

"That's finished. All done. We're just kind of waiting to get a record deal and get it out.

"We've not managed to get a title yet. We're in the middle of doing the artwork. Down to a shortlist of about three. The first single? That will be four-and-half minutes long."

Battle of the bands

When asked if Oasis were still Britain's biggest band, or whether the Arctic Monkeys had taken over that mantle, Noel admitted: "We'll be bigger than them in terms of ticket sales, but they'll probably sell slightly more records than us.

"But then again, they've got about 20 years on us. So see where they are in 2089, or whenever it is they'll be my age."

Meanwhile, Glastonbury organisers took out an advert in Monday's Guardian newspaper to encourage ticket sales.

The ad invites people to "take a five-day break at Worthy Farm and enjoy the most extraordinary festival anywhere in the world".

The full line-up will be announced on 1 May.

1.    First and foremost congratulations on the return of Jay Sean, the music, the lyrics and the video.

Thanx its great to be back!

2.    It's been 3 years since the albums music etc, apart from touring, major label headaches what else have you either learnt or matured in your mindset & character

That in a job like this, my career is usually in the hands of others...my producers, my management, my label, my pr, my radio and tv pluggers, marketing, video directors, photographers etc..so I soon realised that I needed to handpick my team and work with the people that I have a great rapport with and those that love the project and will want to work it as hard as they can. So I set up my own label with my management - 2point9, so that I could be in control of all these factors.

3.    From your own personal opinion why is it that there is a big problem with majors and why their is a lack of Asian talent at the forefront, as this has been said many times before from football, Olympics television and so on (Brit Asian Perspective)

I just think the music industry is evolving, record sales have declined because a lot of people download illegally for free. There were days when a single could sell a million copies because there was no other way to buy it, now a successful single might only sell a max of 100,000. So majors are watching their money. Many have merged or changed their deals so that they take a percentage of live income. The model is different now. This has allowed independent labels such as my own, Jayded records, to compete. As for Asians the time will come. Only 40 years ago we were packing sausages at meat factories for a living, slowly mentalities have changed and we are more prevalent in media..it can't happen overnight. The opportunities will come and times have already started to change.

4.    You have a great fan following, we love you (ahem) the people love you and are admired by many, is there anything that you still have to achieve that you haven't done so

Haha. Thankyou. Of course. In my head, I have only just begun. I wish to take my music and my name to the levels of the Eminems, the Ushers, the    Justin Timberlakes etc. To be up there performing at the Grammys, and to take it as far as I can. I am very happy with what I have achieved so far, but I have a long way to go.

5.    We were at the UK AMAS recently, congrats on the double awards, but also more importantly was your speech (apart from the performance), you were very grateful appreciative and also came out and told everyone that you had spent money from your own pocket to achieve what you do, this was fantastic and seriously something that should educate people to understand more... can you elaborate on the message let the people know why

I believe in myself. I love what I do, and its the only thing I know. It makes me happy- writing and recording and performing RnB music, and I won't let anyone hold me down or take away my dream. I knew I had a very loyal fanbase that would support me and so I took control of my future, because no one will care about me more than me!

6.    Maybe - the new video and single from yourself, already playlisted on the ShitzNitz video player, personally I like this video and the track as it brings out a more RnB flow and style. Is there going to be anymore videos?

Thanx! Of course! the video for "Stay", the 3rd single is already done and ready for u guys once the time comes! (Personally, its my favourite thing I've ever done)

7.    It's good to also see you back to the London boy looks with the short hair and so on, how comes with the big change from the other hairdos and the mullets you had before? I think shorter hair is better do you agree?

Thank you very much! I prefer it too! Its good for the soul not to spend an hour styling your hair in the mornings!

8.    How are you perceived within your family? How do your family take to you? As we all know Indian families tend to be big as Italian families with extended aunts uncles cousins and nephews, what kind of things do they say to you when they meet up?

Its always strange when u have a big family reunion and people want to take photos of u and ur like "ummm..but I'm ur cousin..." Hahahahha. Okay well its not quite as bad as that...but the extended family do get happy to see you and of course everyone is really proud.

9.    What words of advice and encouragement would you give to those who want to get into music and get your status?

Don't let anyone rob you of your dreams, so go for it, BUT be realistic, its not easy in this industry, its a tough game and there's a lot of rejection and hurt, so be thick skinned, work hard at it, and believe in yourself.

10.    Finally, you know this interview is going out to a global audience from different musical backgrounds, what would you like to say to them?

Last night (6 March) was a big night for the UK Asian music scene. Fans and industry representatives gathered at the Southbank Centres Royal Festival Hall for the UK Asian Music Awards. With West End star Preeya Kalidas and B4U Music VJ Salil presenting, the stage played host to some of the UKs most talented Asian artists and an array of celebrity guest presenters such as Grammy nominated Daniel Bedingfield, Panjabi singer Juggy D, director Gurinder Chadha, UK RnB group Fundamental 03, Syed Ahmed and Ghazal from apprentice, Grand Prix driver Adam Khan and many more.

Audiences were treated to performances by North American hip hop artists Blitzkrieg, Roachkilla with Surinder Rattan, D-Boy featuring Swiss and V Dubl E, Dutch singer Imran Khan, RnB sensation Jay Sean, Singer-songwriter Karen David, Punjabi singer Lehmber Hussainpuri, Punjabi Hit Squad featuring Alyssia, the Shaanti Collective with The Kalyan, Sona Family, Bollywood producers Trickbaby and Rishi Rich closed the show with a special performance with Veronica, Mumzy and H Dhami.

R Kelly judge threatens jail term

R Kelly judge threatens jail term

R&B singer R Kelly has been threatened with jail by the judge in his child pornography trial in Illinois.

Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan scolded the singer for missing a pre-trial hearing earlier this week, and said he may revoke the star's bail.

"Mr Kelly, I'm very disappointed," he said. "These are extraordinary things and not to be taken for granted."

The 40-year-old has pleaded not guilty to charges of videotaping sex acts with a teenage girl.

"I need more input about what happens to you if I revoke your bail and stop you from concerts," said Mr Gaughan.

Mr Kelly's lawyer, Ed Genson, told the judge his client had always appeared on time in court before and had adhered to other rules and restrictions that had been set.

"He's not violated your honour's trust," he said.

Earlier this week Mr Kelly, who is touring the US, missed a court appearance because his bus was stopped by police in Utah.

Officers ordered the driver to stop for eight hours after the bus log book failed to document enough rest time for him.

Jay Seans much anticipated single Ride It is riding high across radio airwaves and has recently been playlisted on Londons Capital FM, is Song of the Week on Kiss FM and is now on the A' list playlists for Choice FM and 1xtra!

Last night Jay was featured on BBC News 24's entertainment segment. If you missed it you can see it via the interactive button, online and on BBC World Service from the weekend. Jay will also be performing a number of songs for the recording of Desi DNA and Asian Network presents... at Scala, London on Monday. Also, don't forget to tune into a special live lounge session with Ras Kwame - Radio 1 on 16^th December.

Making the most of the great support from both Asian and mainstream media, the single Ride It will now be release on 21st January.

THE TRACK

Swiss eloquent and sharp rap style combined with angelic Punjabi vocals and

superstar-spit from V Dubl E makes Nach Ke a mix made in PLAYBACK heaven.

The icing on the cake is a soon to be legendary video, shot in Hollywood,

complete with palm trees, an afro wig, 70s dance moves and leopard skin furry

dice! It perfectly captures the energy and the heat that comes with the bhangra

infused hip hop single.

THE ALBUM

The rest of the highly anticipated PLAYBACK album

features a wealth of talent pulled together by D-boy

including Punjabi Maestro Des-E (formally of the Mentor

Kolectiv), R&B crooner Sef, Ranjit Mani from India, Swiss,
