My wait is almost over

For 3 years I have waited for figs from a locally found plant. (the story has been posted many times, so I won't re-hash it here...I will say that it has that all too common thread of an Italian immigrant family and a special plant brough to Michigan)

I feared that this year I wouldn't see ripening figs, that I would be left with hard green figs when all the leaves fell. The weather lately certainly has not been cooperating (we saw upper to mid thirties this past week) but, on Friday I saw something surprising!

I have pictures (see below) and I'm hoping someone can give me a clue about what variety it might be. Once fruit has fully ripened I'll post a picture of a split fruit as well.

<img src="http://usera.ImageCave.com/hills98/08%20Figs%20003.jpg">

<img src="http://usera.ImageCave.com/hills98/08%20Figs%20002.jpg">

~Chills (I can say that the leaves are a foot long (plus or minus a couple inches) and they are mosaic free!! So what is it??)

btw...Jon, the plant I ordered from you arrived yesterday safe and sound. (and being outside repotting it was when I noticed the figs on the above plant had started ripening!)
rootstock

Hi everyone!
Today I was digging up my Celeste I planted earlier in Spring. It was no doing good in that spot. So when digging it up I discovered it had alot more roots (including a tap root growing upward???) than I thought it would. I was pulling the St. Augustine grass off of the rootball and accidently pulled a Big root with a small rootsystem attached off of the side of the trunk. I stuck it in a pot with potting soil but I was wondering, can you do anything with the rootstock like that? I have started a tree with a piece of trunk and rootstock attached but never just roots.. Any ideas? Thanks :)
Kim
New figs came

I hit a fig jackpot yesterday :) Jon sent my order from Encanto Farms which was 4 Trees: Stella, Bournabat, Dannys Delight, and Unknown Pastilier. And then when I went to the nursery to get some potting soil to pot up. Well there was a clearance sale.... one lonely fig. It was a 5gal. Brown Turkey with a ton of figs on it, some ripe. It looks nothing like my Brown Turkey fig trees.
Well, here are the pictures and I added the sunrise this morning :)) HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!
EL Figs Arrived Today

UPS delivered my Marseilles and Celeste today. Very impressed with the good packing job by EL. The Celeste has 3 small figs on it and roots already growing out of the bottom of the pot. The Marseilles also very healthy. So, need some advice ...

Should I pot-up and keep indoors for the winter? The paperwork says they are hardened off so should I move them outside and let them go dormant? I'll post some pics when I get a chance.
Repotted Little Fig Plants (Turface, Grit, Pine Mulch)

After talking with Tapla and his advice for my growing needs i bought the mixture from various stores and pulled out little ones today as it was overcast at the time and in the 50s it rained as well last night.I shook off a lot of the old miracle grow potting soil from roots as much i can and repotted with new mix and little lime gave some rain water with little miracle grow fertilzer.I also washed the pots as these will go indoors for winter under a T5 sun blaze grow light with a 6500k bulb nothing to fancy but hope to keep most leaves and give some growth, nest year i winter them in garage. Leaves on the largest of 3 plants wilted some but i expect they will be fine with some time i keep in some shade till they point back again. Hope you enjoy pictures. Oh and Tapla if you read this post i want to thank you for takeing the time for me to help, its deeply appreciated any sticks you ever need i help you too.
So here are some pictures for you hopefully to enjoy, i really enjoyed myself doing this and will have something to look at in winter other than bare tree's in my garage
Martin
previous miracle grow potting soil

cleaned pots

here are the roots before i repot them from the 3 little plants

here is new soil mix potted and after i washed dirty leaves

Zombie fig- back from the dead...

This past spring I was very successful at rooting my UCD cuttings in a bag. They sent me 26 and I rooted 24. There were 2 that had several mold issues adding to the fact that they didn't look good from the start.

Since I'm not one who gives up easy, I took the dead sticks and plugged them in to my vegtable garden. Nothing special done other than my usual waterings. This weekend I cleaned out the garden and much to my surprise, one of the dead sticks was showing some growth (see photo). I started rooting these cuttings in March. It's been 6 months!!! I think this may qualify as the longest fig rooting experiment.
Too bad I don't remember what variety it was.

Osborn Prolific-aka Neveralla & Archipel-Color Variations

I see Osborn Prolific described by various nurseries & others with skin colors ranging from dark to light. Raintree Nursery describes it as a dark purple skin fig; Condit describes it as bronze with a violet tinge and mine is as Condit describes. Are there different color variations or different strains?

Very Last E.L. Sal's Fig of Season

This is it no more on tree for season. Soon when hard frost comes i put the tree away this year.
I tasted this fig and not nearly as good as before but it tasted better than my favorite this year Hardy Chicago only now as it was not as dry and the sweetness although not so much as before during height of season was ok to eat unlike hardy chicago and my unknown tree. Either way its just the last fig so for me the last 2 years Hardy chicago wins out for my palate. You know i will have for me some different types waiting to produce now that i never had before some are very small and will not produce next year another few maybe, im sorry to see season end but then i really look forward to next year to watch new ones grow up, i always liked to watch them grow especially how beautiful the tiny laeaves look!
Martin
