Porting help & pricing

Hello Bob,
I have a 2004 Cobra. I drive the car when I can on the weekends when I can & love taking it to shows. My goal with this car is the keep it looking as stock as possible for the shows but to get as much HP as possible for me. I've done A LOT of research & have decided that my best option is you. I have looked at the different stages on your web site. This car is my baby & I'm nervous to decide anything on my own when it comes to this. I want the max HP & TQ I can get without hurting how the car runs & looks. I've read about how the accufab TB's may stick. Not sure if that's the same for the dragon or not. I know I could go with the stock TB but again that's where the greed sets in cause I want the max power possible. I would love some help if you would be so kind.

Here is whats on the car now.....
2.76 upper pulley & Idler
4" LFP CAI (into fender well)
SLP cat back exhaust
LFP heat exchanger
SCT tuner(car programmed to 91 oct)

After I have everything done I will have the car re-tuned & set to 93 oct.

Thanks for any help on this!!!!
                                                     Matt

Forum: ASK BOB

THROTTLE BODY AND PLENUM REVIEWS FOR PORTED EATON'S

Throttle body and Plenum review for ported Eaton's.

Stock OEM Tb have great drive ability and manners, however in many cases is sized smaller than the optimum or you have modified your Cobra to the point where your Tb is the bottle neck that is holding your back.

When looking at your OEM Throttle body you probably have noticed the sprayed on sealer type material around the butterfly's, there are 2 reasons for this, one is to keep a build up of carbon from forming and secondly to seal the throttle blades and allow the IAC motor computer to control idle manners, idle down speed, and idle speed.

When opting for a large type Tb we are going to increase performance but usually sacrifice throttle manners. The reasons are many and vary from brand to brand. The most common complaints are idle speed, slow idle down, throttle sticking at off idle, weird air sounds detected at CAI, and cruise control problems. With advanced tuning techniques and mechanical tweaking, large Tb's can perform very nicely.

Stiegemeier porting modifies stock OEM Tb and Pl along with all large Tb types.

Air flow on a stock Cobra Tb and Pl is 878 CFM. Our latest large Tb an Pl we use flow at a rate of 1132 CFM by welding the Pl and enlarging the gasket area at the low pressure side of the ported Supercharger. We are now taking advantage of the large throttle blade and seeing a flow rate of 1283 CFM. These large flowing welded Tb and Pl are an option on Stiegemeier ported superchargers Stage 5+.

Forum: STAGE 4 OR 5 COBRA PORT

Header install, 2lb boost loss

Bob:
I know 2lbs of boost is typically lost when installing full length headers. I am currently running your stage V ported Eaton with a 4lb. lower, giving me 10lbs. of boost with the headers. With a new tune could I safely run an 8lb. lower to restore approx 4 ilbs. of boost for a total of 14 to 15? Or would this max out the Eaton's effective operating range? I also have a 6lb. lower I could add. I do have a Mafia extender to go with any new tune.....Other mods include an Accufab TB, Trueflow intake tube, K&N CAI....

Forum: ASK BOB

INFORMATION TO READ

More is not always better especially with blower speed

Our Stage 4 is great- but the Stage 5 stands on it's own in a different way.
When modifying a Supercharger we are porting and polishing the unit for Max efficiency, at the same time keeping a balance between the low to high pressure sides.
Look at this procedure the same way you would a camshaft change. Larger Cams make more power because a duration (how long you hold the valve open) and lift (how high you lift the valve over stock) Center line overlap, the amount of degrees the intake valve is ahead of the exhaust and finally RPM speed how quick you open the valve. The larger the CAM profile the higher the working RPM range is.

Now let's go back to Supercharger porting, As the stages increased from 1-4 the unit got larger, sacrificing off throttle peak torque for unbelievable HP and TQ gains at higher RPM,s.
About 99% of all supercharged cars have modified their pulley's for more blower speed which in turn brings the improved power curve back down to an off throttle position.
The SVT Cobra with an upper pulley only can safely run a stock fuel system along with a stock MAF, if someone tells you differently you are being mis-informed.

It is fair to say that most of us want our cake and eat it too, Max HP and TQ gains with zero sacrifice's at a fair price. We have tested long and hard to build the most efficient Supercharger port. The result is Stage 5, a design which does not need to be over spun to make up for off throttle differences. A Stage 5 will make even HP and TQ with an upper pulley at 15.5 #s boost with a straight shot CAI 23 degree's timing.
500 RWHP 500 RWTQ

The throttle response is equal to a 2# lower on a Stage 5 port.
Now let's go back to what our fuel system can handle, we know an upper only pulley, say a 2.76 can run an OEM fuel system.
We now have the Stage 5 blower that has throttle response equal to running a 2# lower-but without the cost of not only a lower pulley but no expensive fuel system upgrades. We also retain all OEM drivability and idle manners. It is a win win situation on efficiency and cost, I am proud of this accomplishment.
For those of you who desire running more boost and high blower speeds, listen to what I say
2.76 upper a 2# lower with Stage 5 porting
2.76 upper a 3# lower with Stage 4 porting
These setups require fuel mods, MAF and clutch upgrades.

Higher blower speed than this can be ran, but engine mods, exhaust mods, fuel and tuning expertise is required.
Average Cost for RWHP on a SVT Cobra:

500/500 $1000.00-1500.00
525/525 $2500.00-3000.00
550/550 $3000.00-3500.00
600/600 $6000.00-7500.00- Must run at least 110 Octane at all times to avoid engine damage.
(these are just averages)

When you add a 4 to a 6# lower without correct engine and exhaust mods you will make more heat less power.
More is not always better especially with blower speed.
Is more timing better than the correct amount? NO
Is more fuel better than the correct amount? NO
Is more blower speed better than the correct amount? NO

I hope this helps those of you who might have been confused or had concerns.
We will talk about the TB and PL porting next.

Thank you
Sincerely
Bob Stiegemeier
           ___________________________
Forum: STAGE 4 OR 5 COBRA PORT

Bob,

'04 Cobra w/Stieg. Stg. 4+ Eaton. I am DONE with the Accufab TB as it has been rebuilt once and still sticks after WOT and when the car sits for over 3 days upon start-up.

I am interested in the Dragon setup w/plenum. Should the plenum be port matched for the stg. 4+ inlet? Is the port match enough or should it be welded as well as ported?
Does the Dragon come with a IAC motor? I notice the Dragon relocates the IAC to below the TB but there doesn't appear to be any clearence for the stocker.

Thanks

Forum: ASK BOB

(this are just averages)

When you add a 4 to a 6# lower without correct engine exhaust mods you will make more heat less power.

Forum: 03/04 COBRA STAGE 4 VERSES STAGE 5

Installing an '08 Shelby GT 500 engine in my '03 Lightning

Good afternoon, Bob
Have been looking at your web a couple years now....1st - time 'talker'! At 1st blush, it doesn't look like a major project...even if I decide to convert to 6-speed manual...most of the issues are converting to 'drive-by-wire' throttle, OR, going with a conventional Lightning throttle. I've begun port-matching the intake-side of the heads and, thought while the top-end is apart, it might be a pro-active thought to have you go through the blower with a Stage-V tune and 2.2" pulley.
Another thought occurs; Reichard Racing makes a 1" billet spacer for the Eatons on the 5.4L 2-valve motor and has proven great success in "straightening - out" the airflow into the after-cooler. They proved their $300 piece good for 30+ RWHP. I'd be interested in your thoughts concerning having one mfg'd for the 5.4L 4-valve motor, which has even greater shrouding of the after-cooler...
Lastly, why do you NOT recommend phenolic throttle and plenum spacers??? Seems to me, keeping the in-coming air as cold as possible will also aid in keeping charge-air temps down....OR, are these things promoting heat-saturation of the supercharger???? If THIS is the case, how about having the inside of the plenum, throttle housing and MAF housing JET-HOT coated as this, although FAR MORE expensive than JDM's plastic pieces, will have a better result, do to the superior thermal barrier???
Hope you and the family had a safe and relaxing holiday weekend

Reggio Calabria........"buena fortuna famiglia d'Steigemeier "

Forum: ASK BOB
