First Friday

The First Friday Art tour continues to morph and change, but is arguable become a staple event for Downtown Santa Cruz.

It seems to me the potential of this event for bringing people downtown and into the stores is enormous. There are many examples of First Friday's or similar art tours all over the place that do really well.

In thinking about how the Downtown Association can assist with this event and help it grow I have the following thoughts.

Promotion - Obviously using or existing promotional streams to advertise the event and let people know specifically what's going on each month.

Coordination 0 Helping administer the gather of information about what activities are going on each month.

Fundraising - Helping to identify sponsors to help underwrite the cost of the bus and other First Friday expenses.

I welcome other thoughts on how to leverage this event and increase it's reach.

Forum: Promotions Committee

Charge of the Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is the natural link between the many business members and the DTA. In order for the organization to be effective in the execution of it's mission, an engaged and informed membership is essential.
Over the years many avenues of communication and many programs have been enacted towards this end. As we move forward and enter a period of planning and potential restructuring, a relationship with the membership is more important than ever.

Below are some of the tools the Membership Committee has employed to involve the membership. At the September Membership Committee meeting we will be discussing the role and functions of the Committee. Whether you can make the meeting or not, please take a minute to share any thoughts you may have on how this committee can best function.

Membership Communications -
Newsletter
E-Newsletter
Welcome Packets
Ribbon Cuttings
DTA Brochure
Block Captains
Mixers
Quarterly Breakfasts
Annual Dinner
Workshops

Forum: Membership Committee

Identity

As the Promotions Committee is charged with the very general function of promoting Downtown, two fundamental ideas are continually in question. One, Who are we promoting Downtown to? and perhaps more basically, What exactly are we promoting?

The questions go hand and hand, and point to a more refined concept of identity development. Downtown has always been, and will presumably always be, a center for many cultures, many communities and many uses. As new housing, especially condos are being built, there is an increased level of ownership of the neighborhood. As the city develops more venues for commerce, whether in the form of big box stores, or complete shopping districts, there is an opportunity for the Downtown to craft a specific identity, that stands out and exploits the differences between downtown and other shopping options.

The DTA has employed slogans in the past such as, "Something for Everyone" and currently, "It's All Right Here". While these are intended to attract a broad audience and express appeal to everyone - literally, the really do not do anything to explain our downtown.

So then, how do we explain our downtown? From the business community's perspective, What is the image we want to convey about our downtown? When visioning the Downtown that we want to live in, shop in, do business in, how would we describe it?

I could imagine that the 600+ businesses in the district would have trouble achieving consensus on the big question of, what is a successful downtown. And certainly when you add thousands of residents, employees, visitors and the rest of the at large community, it is probably impossible, but what are the points we can agree on. Is there a shared vision for a successful and vibrant Downtown?

Once we can agree on what success looks like, then we can work together to achieve it. Without a road map, we are all lost, even if we are on the same street.

Chip

Forum: Promotions Committee
