We are from Iowa. We have been looking at various differnet rescues trying to find a great dane to adopt, but due to our location know one has been willing to work with us nor have they been able to list a location that is willing to adopt to people in our area. We have 2 cats and would love the opportunity to adopt a great dane pair. Actually, we would love the opportunity to adopt any great dane regardless of age, sex, or color. If someone could help us by pointing us in the right direction we would be very grateful.
Thank you,
Brianne

Forum: Big Dogs in need of new homes

He was at our rescue and we think he is a great dog! Perhaps he wouldn't be the dog Marc describes below if he wasn't with Marc being beat up by other dogs!

Ice - Another dog at the Deaf Dane "Rescue" who will seem to have NO ESCAPE from there as a result of Marc Sayer's sad fight and bite atmosphere of having intact males roaming with all the other dogs and then not being corrected of the bad behaviors that they learn there. Sadly, in Marc Sayer's unnatural abusive environment, Ice has learned to and is allowed to growl at people and is allowed to vocalize aggressively towards other dogs. HE DID NOT ACT THIS WAY IN HIS OTHER FOSTER HOME (read below their very wonderful description of him*)

* Ice came to us from Arkansas Great Dane Rescue. He is learning about crates. great on a leash. He is hw positive and is on preventative. He is altered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is a very special guy. He is smart and very loyal. He will be a great addition to any family that has a little extra time to spend with him. His picture does not do him justice as he is quite the looker.

ICE HAS BEEN CAUSED TO ACT THIS WAY BASED ON THE WAY MARC SAYER IS HANDLING HIM AND ALL THE OTHERS THAT ARE IN HIS SAD "RESCUE"!!! This behavior has been learned from being in Marc Sayer's environment and could be easily corrected but he is instead allowed to have these quirks which then makes Marc Sayer justify that he is not adoptable. Marc Sayer admits that he is not an aggressive dog, yet because Marc is unable to correct this new behavior that has been learned by Ice as a direct result of being in this horrible situation - and which Marc Sayer is either unable to correct or has not tried but has just accepted it, as it is made to seem from his website description below - Marc Sayer is causing this sweet dog to spend his whole life at this sad rescue - likely fighting and biting with intact dogs that do not want to play with him as is also described in Marc's description below about Ice. In addition, Marc Sayer does not get the dogs medical care when they fight and instead says it is part of the learning process to have the cuts heal without stitches and medical care, etc. Poor Cassie, the blind and deaf Dane that Marc Sayer bred was a mess of cuts and unhealed scratches from this horrble environment and then he bred her after keeping her there her WHOLE LIFE and then she died! That is what poor Cassie learned and had for her entire life after coming to Marc Sayer as a little puppy and living her whole life there till he bred this blind and deaf girl at 18 months and now she is dead and so are most of her puppies - read her stories here ; http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/danegang/vpost?id=1146597 and http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/danegang/vpost?id=1146599 and http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/danegang/vpost?id=1146606 and http://www.danegang.org/id159.html. Please don't let poor Ice have the same fate as Cassie - living his whole life in this place being fought with and bitten and then dying there, never knowing a true home of his own! Instead of allowing Ice to act this way, he could be easily corrected and could go to a good home. He was NOT acting this way before and therefore can be corrected if he could just be rescued from Marc Sayer. He was sent to Marc Sayer by the other rescue for the purpose of finding him a good home. There is no excuse for this happy sweet dog to stay his entire life in this rescue. He should be turned over to someone able to correct this situation and have the home that he deserves. There is no excuse for a Great Dane sized dog or any dog for that matter to be allowed to growl - even playfully - at people and dogs - when it is an easily corected behavior! Also quoted and described below: Ice is being allowed to fight and have inexcusable interaction with intact dogs which can also lead to problems and should NEVER be allowed in rescue:

Marc Sayer is allowing intact male dogs to be amidst the neutered dogs which is usually NOT EVER ALLOWED IN RESCUE!!! This is also why he is always having accidental breedings and why some dogs are more likely to fight if they are intact and there are also unaltered females around as we all know there are now based on the several accidental breedings we have personal knowledge of and likely there were and are alot more! Rescues are usually required to keep all dogs separated until they are neutered. Here as per Marc Sayer's description from his very own website, Ice is "playing" with two intact males, one of them likes him and the other is afraid of him - AND WILL LIKELY FIGHT WITH HIM and cause him to be more aggressive. Both should have been separated until neutered. If an unaltered female is thrown into the mix, Ice could be beaten up and have his ears tattered. which has also happened in Marc Sayer's environment also as per his own descriptions of what has happened to other dogs that we have reprinted here from his very own website (see Chyna's story about her tattered ears after living in Marc Sayer's "rescue" for two years of her life from the age of a little puppy: http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/danegang/vpost?id=1146358 - TOO SAD!!) Although Marc Sayer has around 30 Danes in his house which is a violation of his limits with his Animal Control, here he admits to Ice being with a pack of 19 Great Danes. And when Ice first came to him, Ice was good with all of the dogs. Sadly, despite all descriptions of others who knew Ice and fostered him and think he can be a happy, sweet dog in a loving family as every rescue dog should have a chance to be, Ice will likely spend the rest of his life and even die there in this fight and bite environment because Marc Sayer has now deemed Ice to be an unnadoptable "Sanctuary Dog" Poor thing! There will be NO ESCAPE for Ice!

See attached pictures and you can see that Ice had no marks on him when he was transported to Marc Sayer. You can see him pictured with three different people including Jeannie Laub. Then see him in the picture with a Brindle Great Dane who is putting his neck over Ice in a manner that usually precedes an aggression problem. That Brindle dog is NOT in a friendly posture towards Ice. Look closely at all of the pictures and you will see that his fur is very smooth and there is not a scratch on Ice at the time he arrived. If you are able to zoom into the last picture of Ice with the brindle dog or just look very closely, you will see there are scratches and cuts and raised skin bumps and marks all over him. On his face alone, there is a large scratch on his forehead and two smaller scratches over each eye. The smaller scratches almost look as if he has a black spot over each eye, but look again at the arrival pictures closely and you will see he does not have spots over his eyes towads the middle of his face. The whole front of his nose seems scratched and very pick as well. Also look at his legs and see so many welts and scratches . There is also an extra large cut that almost looks like a hole on his left front foot and another on his chest. He is also wearing a "Flea collar" which has pretty much been deemed ineffective to prevent fleas and ticks on such a large dog. In today's world , rescues put Advantix or Frontline on all dogs to truly prevent fleas and ticks so who knows if having a flea infestation could be part of the reason his skin looks so bad other than being fought with and having cuts and scratches. Also remember that he is deaf and that it seems as if in this picture, he is about to be fought with right then by this Brindle Great Dane who has put his neck over him in a dominant manner - and it seems as if Ice is oblivious to this, possibly because he cannot hear the dog and has not sensed the aggressive posture and will likely get hurt or cut or scratched again unless it is stopped. Who knows if it was. From all the other marks on him and from Marc Sayer's conversations with those who know him, it may just be "part of the learing process" to Marc Sayer, though definitely NOT in the best interests of these dogs.

This description is reprinted directly from Marc Sayer's Website:

ICE

Gender - male
Age/DOB - 12/18/01

Height at the shoulder -

Weight - 120

Spayed/Neutered - Yes

Taken in on - 10/10/04
Available as of - 04/10/05
Housebroken - Yes

Obedience trained - some

Good with other dogs - Not some small dogs

with cats - No

with kids - not very young

with the elderly - no

Temperament - Seems to have a higher than average prey drive

Comments

* Ice came to us from Arkansas Great Dane Rescue. He will be a great addition to any family that has a little extra time to spend with him. He is a happy kind of guy, a bit exuberant, and needs a strong but very loving hand from what we can see so far. He had no trouble dealing with suddenly being part of a pack of 19 Danes. He can get a bit out of control. He eats like he's never seen enough food. He was a hit with all the people involved in his transport. We'll update this page with more info and photos as time goes by.

After being there for 5 months at the time this description was written below and now he has been there for almost 2 YEARS!!!!, he is now acting differently and will now likely NEVER ESCAPE:

Read about how he is always interacting with intact males continuously as should never happen in rescue:

Update 5/1/05 - We have had Ice for a while now. He is generally a very sweet, mellow dog, but he also has his moments of rowdiness. He can get hyper excited sometimes and can be a handful. He does growl at you sometimes but it is not aggressive, he is just a very talkative dog. In fact he often growls when he is happy. It can be unnerving for someone who isn't used to this sort of behavior. He has special needs and will require a firm loving hand. He will only be placed in a home with experience with large active assertive dogs. All in all he is a wonderful boy, and he will be devoted to his new owners. But he is certainly not the dog for everyone. If you are up to the task, he will reward you with love unending, and a marvelous quirky personality. He gets along just fine with the other dogs here, though he can come on a little strong for some. As in other situations where he tends to vocalize a lot, he can sound a bit scary when playing with the other dogs, but it is just his way, he is not being aggressive. If the dog can deal with this, there won't be a problem. But he intimidates some dogs, so we need to be careful about placing him with other dogs. But let me reiterate, he is not being aggressive with the other dogs, he just is very vocal and enthusiastic, and he is not the most socially adept dog so he can get too rowdy sometimes. His favorite play buddy is an intact male we have right now named Frodo. Frodo is unfazed by Ice and sees it all as just good fun, so these two guys get along great. If Ice were really aggressive in any way, this just would not be possible. But these two guys are always playing and roughhousing together and they get along just fine. Their play often sounds like WWII, but if you watch them, they are just having the time of their lives playing. On the other hand we have another intact male who is fearful and insecure, and he and Ice do not get along all that well.

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

There was one witness in the restaurant that came out to check on me. She was a thin blond about 55 years old wearing a boot cast on her right leg. There were other patrons and workers in the restaurant at the time.

Mark put the dog in the back of my vehicle that had a metal barricade between the front and open back area of a Jeep Cherokee. He put the puppies in a crate in the back of my vehicle.

While I was petting the dog, it lunged and bit me from the back of my vehicle where it had been placed for transportation to a Great Dane Rescue. Mark had to pry the dogs jaws off of my arm. At that time he stated I had blood running down my face. I had been bitten in less than a second on both my face and right fore arm. At that time I had gone into shock and did not know it. (My doctor informed me of this.)

The owner, Mark, stated to the dog, This is going to make it much harder to place you with a family.

The owner stated to me, She always bites and hangs on when she fights with other dogs. Because she is dog aggressive, I have to physically pry her jaws loose from the other dogs. That is why she has all the scars on her face. They are from dog bites. See, she has a new one there besides an old one on this side and a few on the other side.

He said, I will be at this number for the next few hours if you need to reach me. He said, Well, you might need to call me and if you do, I will be at this number.

The owner had no concern with leaving this dog with me. The owner had my cell phone number.

The owner was dirty, stunk, had bad breath and was driving a pickup in disrepair. The dog was dirty, stunk and was covered with scars. The dog was quite visibly blind except for limited sight in its right eye. The dog was completely deaf. I believe the dog lived by its sense of smell and when it could no longer smell its odiferous owner it was terrified and became vicious in an attempt to protect its puppies. This irresponsible owner said the dog was 18 months old. There is no excuse for her not being spayed and especially for her being bred and whelped. This owner is not responsible and should not be allowed to portray himself as a Rescue organization when he allows breeding (apparently he has a breeding male) instead of spay/neuter and harbors a vicious dog that should have been put down for the safety of other dogs and humans and itself.

While traveling, the dog lunged at me numerous times. I offered food and water that resulted in vicious lunges at me. I wrapped a blanket behind my head to protect myself from her lunges at the barricade. Animal control and my husband insisted I stay in the vehicle as they removed the dog from my vehicle by the use of 2 choke poles. The dog almost broke the window out of my vehicle by lunging at people outside the vehicle. Animal control insisted Jeannie at GDR was in the vehicle during this removal, also.

My doctor has examined me. I do not have a doctors report. I have been given a tetanus shot and oral antibiotics for the dog bites. I am anxiously waiting the results of the rabies test on the dog.

CS

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

Issue #5 Marc breeds Cassie & kills 4 puppies

Marc took Cassie in as a young puppy. Now she's 18 months, bred by "BO" a Harlequin male currently at Marc's "rescue"

Marc allowed 2 Danes to breed

Marc allowed a blind / deaf dog with kennel couch to whelp pups

Marc culled 4 puppies while on the phone with us

(Just because they were white)

Marc asked us to help him

We drove 500 miles each way

We had a volunteer bit in the face and arm

We had to have the dog put to sleep to be tested for Rabies

(Marc won't provide a Rabies certificate)

We had to have her put to sleep because she was so vicious as a result

of not being properly socialized while in Marc's care and also because

she was in so many fights and her many wounds and scars show that she

was attacked often in his rescue, it was second nature for her to bite and

that made her dangerous.

She would not have had to be put down had he not so ruined her by keeping her with him in that terrible environement of fighting and biting for her entire lifetime.

Her face showed the many scars.

Sadly she was never rewarded with a home of her own, because of him!

We have already lost 1 puppy and the other one is being hospitalized.

We have spent enough money covering up Marc's dirty secrets!

_________________________________________________________

Marc Sayer wrote:

Gender- female

Age -
DOB - 11/20/04
Height at the shoulder - unk
Weight -
Spayed/Neutered - not yet
Taken in on - 4/24/05
Available as of - 8/24/05
Housebroken - working on it
Obedience trained - not yet
Good with other dogs - yes

with cats - Yes
with kids - unk
with the elderly - unk

Temperament - Cassie is a very happy little girl at this point, the typical puppy without a care in the world. She is well behaved and very affectionate.
Local story on Marc (Sinner or Saint?)

Three belong to Sayer, and the others are in various stages of being readied for adoption.

All Sayer's dogs are rescued dogs. That means they have been surrendered to shelters or other Great Dane rescuers because of health or behavior problems, and have been transported to Sayer to train and adopt out to suitable homes.

"I am the only rescuer in the state who trains the dogs brought to me," Sayer said Thursday at his north Springfield home.

Each new dog will stay with Sayer an average of six or seven months.

In that time each giant pooch will wolf down roughly 35 bags -- at 40 pounds per bag -- of premium dog food. Sayer said he buys seven or eight 40-pound bags per week and spends about $1,200 a month feeding the canine platoon.

One dog is unable to digest commercial kibble, so Sayer cooks for him. A refrigerator on his back porch is used exclusively for this purpose.

"We live for the dogs," he said with a chuckle. "We have no furniture in our house."

Soon his bare house will be empty of dogs too -- but only at night. To comply with the city's three-dog limit, every night Sayer will load up the remaining 21 dogs and take them to spend the night at property outside the city.

And every morning he will drive them back home again.

Grace and Gandolf will not be bothered by the barks of the other dogs in Sayer's donated Volkswagen van on their daily round trip, nor will they be able to fully enjoy the summer scenery. They are both deaf and partially blind. It's a genetic defect characteristic of Great Danes, Sayer said.

Froto will have to sit next to Sayer during the trip, because he suffers from separation anxiety and panics when Sayer is not close. Froto is completely deaf and blind.

Bo is sighted and can hear, but at 145 pounds, he is grossly overweight and must diet. Bo was surrendered by his Springfield owner. He is Sayer's newest rescue and his largest current resident.

His largest former resident was 195 pounds and stood 40 inches at the shoulder; his smallest was a female at 85 pounds.

He has dogs from Texas, Florida and Las Vegas. Some dogs have been delivered to him; others he has driven to pick up. On one rescue trip Sayer drove 7,500 miles in a week.

"We try hard to not say no to rescue requests," Sayer said. "Often times if we can't take a dog, I know I've signed its death warrant."

He said he is known among Great Dane rescuers as the Houdini of dog trainers. It's a title he has earned with over 30 years experience with Great Danes.

Sayer has been training dogs since he was 8 years old and got his first paying client at age ten.

"Nine out of 10 times, it is the owner who needs training," he said.

Sayer tries to match the dog with its potential owner by taking the dog to the applicant's home and observing how the dog interacts with other household members such as cats, other dogs and children.

Sayer even notes the dog's tail-wagging height. If it is too high, he will not allow the dog to be adopted by a family with children because their tail could knock a child down, he said.

Sayer's adoption fees are $300, which include all shots, microchipping, spaying and neutering.

"No dog leaves here intact," he said.

And no one leaves Sayer's rescue residence without a thorough sniffing from Grace and Gandolf, and a friendly head bump from Bo.

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

A SPRINGFIELD COUPLE IS GOING TO GREAT LENGTHS TO HELP THEIR GREAT DANES. THEY'RE TRAVELING MILES EVERYDAY TO GET AROUND A CITY ORDINANCE THAT ALMOST FORCED THEM TO SHUT DOWN THEIR RESCUE SHELTER.

MARC SAYER USED TO WORK WITH DEAF CHILDREN. NOW HE TRAINES DOZENS OF DEAF DOGS AT HIS SPRINGFIELD HOME. HE AND HIS WIFE, CAROLE LIVE WITH 25 GREAT DANES...21 OF THEM ARE DEAF..SOME EVEN BLIND. THEY STARTED RESCUING THE GIANT POOCHES FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY THREE YEARS AGO. THEY NOW TEACH THEM COMMANDS WITH SIGN LANGUAGE...AND ADOPT THEM OUT TO SUITABLE HOMES.

THE SAYERS HAVE BEEN DOING ALL OF THIS AT THEIR SPRINGFIELD HOME. BUT NOW THEY HAVE TO MOVE...BECAUSE AN ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER STOPPED BY LAST MONTH TO ENFORCE THE CITY'S THREE DOG LIMIT. - (Been here since 1985...now we'be been forced to move..no choice)

(NAT OF DOGS RUNNING INTO CAR) SO THE COUPLE HAS TO SHUTTLE THE GIANT POOCHES EVERYDAY TO WEST FIR FOR THE NIGHT...UNTIL THEY CAN FIND A NEW HOME. THEY KNOW IT WON'T BE IN THE AREA....BECAUSE THE CITY OF EUGENE AND SURROUNDING AREAS ALSO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF CANINES THAT CAN BE CARED FOR AT A HOME. FOR NOW...THE HUNDRED POUND PLUS POOCHES DON'T SEEM TO MIND THEIR 45-MILE TREK... COINCIDENTALLY... TO A PLACE CALLED THE TIRED DOG RANCH. THE OWNER...AMY JO MAURER AGREED TO HELP THE SAYERS OUT AFTER ADOPTING A GREAT DANE FROM THEM A YEAR AGO.

(They're phenomenal...to do this...he has devoted his life...to save teh dogs lives)

IN THE MEANTIME..THE SAYERS ARE LOOKING FOR A HOME IN THE OAKRIDGE AREA...BECAUSE ITS ONE OF THE FEW PLACES THAT ALLOWS DOZENS OF DOGS TO LIVE TOGETHER.
Issue #4 Angel & Remmington

Angel & Remmington came to us from Marc also!

Why? Because Angel a beautiful Harl cropped female was given to Marc by a breeder. Why, because she didn't pass her OFA and needed a new home. You should know that Dane Train arranged this transport.

In the end Marc allowed Angel to breed and could not afford to have her spayed. We went running once again, took both dogs, they were altered immediatly to stop the process Marc had started.

The dog's were adopted by us, to loving homes.

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

Issue #3 Tiergan & Gentle Giants

"Luke"/"Tiergan" was in a shelter in Northern California . Just about

every Great Dane Rescue group in Northern California was called by this

shelter and not one even responded to take him. Finally, the shelter

called Gentle Giants in Southern California. The shelter described his

condition at the time he was turned in as having a leg that had limited

functionality though he did use it and it did help him get around.

Gentle Giants was the only group who would take him out of the shelter.

Gentle Giants transports Great Danes from Northern California at a high

cost regularly because no other Northern CA rescues will take them, just

like no other rescue was willing to take "Luke"/"Tiergan" out of the

shelter. Because "Luke" was very ill with kennel cough and near

pneumonia at the time, he was waived for surgery, per California law, by

the veterinarian at the shelter. Gentle Giants sent a driver to get

"Luke," and he was brought back to Gentle Giants where he was

immediately examined by several vets, heartworm tested, etc. One of

their expert vets was voted "BEST Veterinarian in the Inland Empire for

2004." "Luke" then spent a month at Gentle Giants being cared for and

treated while he recovered. Further exams were done and "Luke"/"Tiergan"

spent a week to ten days at the hospital for an orthopedic evaluation

regarding his leg. It was determined that sometimes the foot could find

the ground, sometimes it couldn't, but it was altogether a better

prognosis for "Luke" to keep his leg. After "Luke" completely recovered,

he was neutered and reexamined, and it was the final decision of the

vets involved that "Luke"/"Tiergan" would be better off keeping his leg

than having it removed. He was healthy and happy, and was given a little

shoe to protect his toes for those times the nerves could not perceive

the ground and they dragged ever so slightly. He was so capable with his

leg that he was able to use it to stand up on both legs and put his paws

on people's shoulders. He jumped around and played like a puppy. He was

adopted from Gentle Giants and was in perfect health and looking and

feeling happy and healthy. Gentle Giants is the only rescue that came

through to save him, and they were prepared to pay whatever was

necessary to help him. And they did have significant expenses! When they

saw this happy puppy with his adoptive family, nothing else matters!

Here is an email from Luke/Tiergan's adopters saying how he is strong

and doing great when they first adopted him from Gentle Giants:

Hi Tracy!

Well, Day One and "Luke" is doing wonderful!

We are thinking of renaming him "Donovan" which means 'dark warrior' or

"Tiergan" which means 'strong' (because he IS strong!). You can tell

he's unsure of his surroundings, at the moment, but he's settling in

quickly.

I emailed the general adoptions addy, but figured you might give a

quicker response to this address. What was "Snuffy" the Saint's,

adoption fee? Just curious- my husband really enjoyed playing with him.

Thank you so much for all of your time last night- I have never seen

such a beautiful group of furkids in one area!

We had a ton of fun playing with the dogs and meeting you and Burt.

Hope to get pics to you soon of Luke settling in here in Vegas.

Trish & Jeremy

Sadly, the story, however did not have a happy ending: Luke/Tiergan was

healthy and beautiful at the time of adoption and it is clear from their

own emails written above that the family adopting him was very happy

too. He was a confident and outgoing dog who loved everyone and who was

never handicapped in his heart and got around wonderfully! While his leg

did not have full function, he used it and was fast and agile. And the

way he used his leg at the time was in a manner that it rarely ever was

in a position to hinder him and in fact only made him stronger. He was

so capable with his leg that he was able to use it to stand and put his

paws on people's shoulders and jumped around and played like a puppy. He

was adopted April 11th from Gentle Giants and was in perfect health and

looking and feeling happy and healthy. Unfortunately the family who

adopted him seems to have committed true abuse and neglect to let a

sweet healthy young dog fall into such disrepair and worse yet, to then

try to blame it on the rescue that they got him from is ludicrous. The

vet who examined and x-rayed and neutered him for Gentle Giants was

voted one of the top vets that year. The family called and talked to

Gentle Giants for weeks after the adoption saying how happy they were

and what a wonderful dog he was. As can be seen from the emails above,

they thought the Gentle Giants dogs were so beautiful and healthy and

happy and they were so happy with Luke/Tiergan that just the day after

adopting him , they were already considering driving back from Las Vegas

to adopt another Gentle Giants dog! They sent several more emails about

adopting this Saint Bernard that they met there as a friend for

Luke/Tiergan and Gentle Giants had begun discussions about that which

continued until the Saint Bernard was adopted along with another Great

Dane to a family who drove to Gentle Giants from Arizona and adopted two

dogs from them and both are doing great there, too. Not once were any

problems brought up ever about Luke /Tiergan. Several months later,

after getting an infection while in his Adopters' home and not being

treated for a whole month because of Marc Sayer, Tiergan lost his leg

and ultimately his life. Tiergan got infected at the Adopters' home and

the Adopters could not afford to care for him. Instead of calling GG for

help, they called Marc Sayer. Marc convinced the Adopters NOT to retun

Tiergan to GG, even though GG would have taken him back and cared for

him. Marc left him infected for a month while he plotted against GG and

"arranged a transport." He put Tiergan's life on hold for his own

selfish, self-serving purposes. Tiergan became septic in that month with

no care and that is why he had to lose his leg . . .

ALL BECAUSE OF MARC SAYER AND HIS ADOPTERS GIVING HIM

NO CARE FOR A MONTH, NOT BECAUSE OF GG!

This is why Rescues require that their dogs be returned to the rescue if

the adopters can't keep them. We at Idaho Great Dane Rescue apologize to

Gentle Giants for not givng them the chance to save the dog that they

cared for so well.

Tracy Ward begged repeatedly at the time to return Tiergan to them and

that they would fly him back to their vets at their own expense, and

that they would have paid for all of his medical needs and saved him

from whatever those people had done to him.

We were unable to return Tiergan due to his urgent need for medical care.

In addition we believed all the lies that Marc Sayer had told about

Gentle Giants and were not sure what to believe. Well, it has all been

verified now. Tiergan really was cared for and vet checked by GG, and we

have his medical records to prove it. This whole story was little more

than a lie with the victim being this sweet loving dog Tiergan and all

of us who believed in Marc. Though we all screen as well as we can, it

is sad when Adopters violate the contract and in this case with the aid

of a supposed "rescue," this poor dog paid with his life and all of us

followed Marc like sheep against a fellow rescuer who was only trying to

save the life of their dog.

Because Tiergan was prevented from getting any care for that critical

month or more by Marc Sayer, poor Tiergan never had a chance! Because of Marc Sayer, Tiergan arrived here already too late to be saved! His death was caused by the same man who killed those four innocent puppies that he bred with his own hands!

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

This is what Marc posted about Tug. Tug was adopted to Julie a woman who had previously adopted a Dane from us. As you will see after Tug attacked her child she was crusified on line for it.

THIS DOG IS DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE PUT TO SLEEP

Gender- Neutered male
Age - 2 years
DOB - 9/2/01
Height at the shoulder - unk

Weight - 121
Spayed/Neutered -Yes
Taken in on - 10/1/03
Available as of - on hold

Housebroken - yes
Obedience trained - Yes very well

Good with other dogs - mostly

with cats - unk
with kids - maybe

with the elderly - yes

Temperament - Under evaluation now

Comments

Tug is a beautiful fawn neutered male. He is AKC registered, has had his dew claws removed and his ears cropped. He has lived with the same family all his life. He is very timid and does not deal well with strangers at this time. We will be working with him and evaluating him over the next few weeks. He is UTD on all his shots and is microchipped. Despite his timidity, he has adapted well to being moved into a home full of Danes and he has not snapped at or gotten aggressive with either me or my wife. In fact he is very sweet and loving when he can screw up the courage to let us pet him.

Well, Tug's been with us for a few days now. He is really starting to come out of his shell. He such a sweet, affectionate dog. He is still not good with strangers, and probably never will be all that good with them. But he is going to make someone a wonderful pet. He is so well trained, and so obedient. And he just wants someone to love him and be there for him. He is fine with all the dogs here, including all the males. He is a bit inept socially with the other dogs. He frequently tries to get them to play but doesn't quite know how to go about it. He tends to come on a bit strong and this discourages the others from playing, but he is slowly learning. The only other dog in his life before this was an older Dachshund, so a house full of Danes is something totally new for him. He is a good protector and excellent watchdog, but he is not going to be good outdoors. Like most Danes, he is a housepuppy. Overall, despite his timidity, he is a great dog. And once he decides you are okay and starts to bond with you, he is going to be a super companion. He is not an aggressive or dangerous dog in any way, however he will need an owner who understands he is not the sort of dog you just let strangers come up to, or let the local neighbor kids play with unsupervised. More for his emotional well being than for the safety of the strangers or kids, however he will scare the pants off some people. Tug needs an owner with lots of Dane experience and some familiarity with "aggressive" dogs. Tug is definitely not a set and forget kind of dog, as so many Danes are. OTOH with his family he is the typical Dane, devoted, loving and very affectionate. He likes to stay near you, preferring to be in the same room with you, but he isn't your typical velcro dog. He doesn't need constant petting, he just wants to keep you in sight. He will happily lay on "his" bed at the other side of the room and not bother you. But if you leave the room, he will be right there with you.

He has beautiful light colored eyes, almost a fawn color. I know this is not the preferred color, but they are truly striking. He is a very handsome dog.

Marc Sayer wrote:

>A woman in Arlington, WA adopted a dog from us the weekend of 8/28. >The dog has aggression issues and she knew all about them from day >one. Less than 36 hours after she picked up the dog, she was emailing me >saying the placement wasn't going to work out because he had lunged at >her 12 year old son several times and he was afraid of him. All of them VERY UPSET with Marc Sayer for breaking the code of rescue and adopting out a dangerous dog that could not be corrected of attacking people. And to make matters worse, a young boy's life was risked by this adoption. Marc Sayer then blamed the Adopter for what had been done and labled her as a Do Not Adopt. Meaning that he told every Rescue that they should NOT adopt a dog to her as a result of his bad judgement for what he had done in adopting out a dog that was a dangerous dog with aggressions issues. He based this on the fact that the poor woman was afraid of the dangerous dog after it attacked her son three times and she did not want to drive six or more hours back to Marc Sayer in the car with him. When Marc Sayer got there to pick up the dog, it was twitching and aggressive to Marc's wife and to all the other people who were there at the time as well. It had been taken to a shelter and they deem ed it a very dangerous dog. Why risk a serious injury or death? Below Marc blames the woman for what happened byut as you can see from the responses, the other rescues think he is very wrong inhis actions:

> the problems were her own fault, and that sending him to the pound would be very traumatic for him. Again, adopting out an aggressive dog as he was described, would have been the traumatic part for him. Once they have the behavior first shown, it is hard to extinguish it forever. Less than 36 hours after she picked up the dog, she was emailing me
saying the placement wasn't going to work out because he had lunged at
her 12 year old son several times and he was afraid of him. Okay, not a
problem so far, although she mishandled the situation and made things
worse, despite supposedly having experience with dogs like this. So I
told her, no problem, just bring him back here to us as agreed (and
stipulated in the contract). Now we have the problem. She refuses to
return the dog to us. At first she says she'll drive him down to
Portland, then she says we have to come get him at the Everett shelter.
I do not know exactly what happened in the hours between her picking him
up and her calling AC, but it's clear that somehow Tug had been
agitated, made to feel extremely fearful, and was generalizing his
aggression. And she was using that as a rationale for her refusal to
return him. She told me at first she was going to take him to the
Everett shelter. But then it got even worse. She had an AC officer
come out and get him like some rabid animal. I believe in part she
wanted to be sure she had an AC officer who could swear to how
aggressive the dog was, and that she set this up as a part of her
planned defense for when we sue her. From the report I got from the AC
officer, who was clearly very scared of Tug, it sounds as though they
may even have intentionally antagonized Tug to make him appear even more
aggressive to the officer.

<> In point of fact his aggression issues were clearly outlined right in the contract:

"17. The adopting family has been advised and understands that Tug has
aggression issues with strangers and must be treated as a dangerous dog.
While he is generally fine with his family, he can be unpredictable,
especially with strangers, and may attack without warning. He must
always be confined or on leash, and closely supervised, especially if he
is around strangers. He must always be closely monitored and supervised,
or confined in a secure crate or kennel. _____ initial here."

This woman looks and sounds good, though she has some financial
problems. She makes all the right noises and says all the right things.
But when it gets right down to it, apparently she could care less about
the dogs. She refused to give the dog the care she had promised she
would and then tried hard to blame it all on me and the dog. Yes the dog
did have issues, and yes he can be very scary. But she knew all this up
front. It should not have been unexpected. The problem is he was scared to death by the
time she contacted AC, and the handling he got from her and her family
as well as from the AC officer, was guaranteed to absolutely send him
ballistic. I now believe that dogs entrusted to her care are at risk, and are not safe. I strongly recommend she be a DNA and I urge all rescues to be very wary of
having anything to do with her.

If you want the DNA's info please contact me privately.

When my wife got up there Tug was scared to death. He was hunkered in
the back of a secluded kennel shaking and twitching, and would not let
anyone near him.

Marc Sayer
Springfield, OR USA

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue

She is under evaluation now and we will update this page as things develop. We can tell you right now that Lambchop is crate trained and amazingly well potty trained for her age. When in her crate she cries to be let out when she needs to go potty. Of course she also cries at other times too, so sometimes we do have false starts. And if you don't get to her fairly quickly, she may not be able to hold it, but she is doing very very well overall. She is not so good if left to wander the house, so we keep her confined to a single room, or the crate when we can not watch her closely. She is very affectionate and playful, basically a typical Dane pup. However IGDR reported she was not so people oriented with them. Here she has been a doll. I think the big difference has been the environment. We have 4 deaf pups right now and she is the largest so she is feeling pretty safe and pleased with herself here. She seems pretty secure and confident, but as with most dogs going through the turmoil of a change in placement, she does not like to be left alone and will raise a ruckus.

Lambchop is a big girl for her age. Not huge as danes go, but much bigger than most of the pups we see. We have two pups about 6 months old right now and she is significantly bigger than both of them. She has a lot of color for a deaf dog, especially around her head and ears. But she is deaf. She has two different color eyes, her left eye is blue, as many double merles' are, but her right eye is green, which is unusual. It is really a modified brown/gold, but it looks green at first. Her eyes are especially striking because of the dark "mascara" all around each eye.

Why did we change her name to Lambchop? - Well Chyna just didn't seem to fit (aside from the size thing, she was in no way reminiscent of the pro wrestler Chyna) and somehow she reminded my wife and I of Shari Lewis' hand puppet Lambchop. And her personality is much more a Lambchop type too.

Update 2/12/05 - Lambchop has really grown up to be a very nice dog. She is affectionate and trouble free. She gets along with all the other dogs and is as reliable on her potty training as any dog we've ever had. Her ears are kind of ratty as they have been torn repeatedly. They seem to be rather fragile. They've been torn by other dogs and even just by her shaking her head near something and hitting her ears. She loves to curl up in a lap or on the couch next to you. She is really a very sweet wonderful girl. Someone will be very lucky to get her.

Forum: Deaf Dane Rescue
