Myanmar: Children's Home Washed Away, Many Other Homes and Schools Damaged

MAY 8, 2008Al Lackey, President of Kids Alive International USA announced today that the cyclone that hit Myanmar has completely destroyed one of the Kids Alive childrens homes. It was washed away by the cyclone.

While many children, staff, and families lost everything, Mr. Lackey reports that the children are all safe and temporarily residing in a local church. Thank God these dear ones are completely safe. However, the children will soon need to be moved into temporary quarters outside of the church. Several other Kids Alive homes and area schools have significant structural damage, including lost roofs and water damage. Complete devastation surrounds the area now void of clean water and electricity. Food is scarce causing food prices to skyrocket. The cost of a bag of rice is now twenty times the average daily wage. Emergency food, clean water, supplies, and housing for the children are needed right now. Our staff of nurses is moving in to give aid to the children in our care as well as the children and families in the surrounding communities.

Mr. Lackey also reported that over $180,000 is urgently needed to rebuild the destroyed childrens home, to repair the damage on the other homes and schools, and provide the emergency care, shelter and medical services that these children desperately need. Additionally, another $100,000 is needed to help support those who live in these communities and show God's love to them in practical ways. Please do whatever you can today to help with this urgent need.

Prominent evangelicals urged Christian conservatives Wednesday to support "an expansion of our concerns beyond single-issue politics," angering some leaders on the religious right allied with the Republian Party.

In a 19-page document called "An Evangelical Manifesto," more than 70 theologians, pastors and others said faith and politics have been too closely mixed. They warned against Christians adopting any one political view.

"That way faith loses its independence, Christians become 'useful idiots' for one political party or another, and the Christian faith becomes an ideology," they wrote.

need roomie for june.

hey, looks like the person I was going to have as a roomie dropped the ball, so ... I'm in need of a roommate for a June lease. It would be a sublease under me so long term would be nice (until next june) but I might be flexible. the place in the Humboldt Park area, is close to the North Ave. bus and somewhat close to the Blue Line.

The cost is $375+ utilities (gas and electric and net) and the deposit of $375, the room is like 9x9 plus a large closet. overall the place is well sized for a two bedroom, lots of light, on the second floor. totally cool landlord who lives here and aside from the outside on a nice day it's pretty quiet. laundry on-site. street parking isn't bad. I'm trying to bring my cat back from my folks since my current roomie is allergic, so you may have to put up with a cat.

Roomate Needed July 1

Hi Everyone,

The place is at Buena and Sheridan. It's one of those old Apts. from the 1920's with spacious living areas that hasn't gotten torn down yet. It's a 30 minute walk to COW. And the rent....is cheap. All the reasons why I'm fighting to stay here. The smallest room is around 400.00; the largest 500.00, utilities included. On site washer and dryer; 1.25 a load.

Host Team: Vision Meeting

To those of you who signed up for more info on the Host Team, or even if you haven't heard about us and are just interested...

Ever walk in a new place and not know who to talk to? That awkward feeling when you really don't know anyone... but you wish you did? Maybe you've come a few times and still not made a connection... people didn't reach out to you, and you didn't quite feel comfortable to make the first move...

Not sure if you knew, but this is a top issue we've heard about in our growing community.

We're listening, and like yourself, we want to be available to serve others others. Thanks so much for stepping forward to become a vital part of our community. We will be holding an informational meeting just after morning worship this coming Sunday, May 4th in the main auditorium.

In this gathering we'll set the vision for what we'll be doing together, answering any questions and forming teams. As well, we'll outline the practical role that will be played by team members. The Hosting team is fun place to meet a very real need, as well as getting to know one another.

Sports, anyone?

I'm newish to Chicago (been here since October, found COWrigleyville in December) and have met a few people, but I'd really love to get a flag football team (or softball team or maybe both) going this summer and I don't know enough people to do that.

I've got two guys plus me right now, so I'm thinking we probably need 7 more committed people to do either sport.

You don't have to be a great athlete or even an above average one. I just want to meet some new guys, have some fun and play outside. As long as we play hard and have fun, that's all I need.

Most of the leagues I've looked into run about $70-$80 per person per sport. The more people we have join, the less it costs per person, though.

If you're interested, just reply back to this and we can go from there. Maybe a meeting of the minds at Guthries...
