Ceramics Biennial 2008 - College Students: Deadline Aug 1, 2008

The New Hampshire Institute of Art will hold its Ceramics Biennial October 8 - November 7th, 2008.

Entry restricted to current college students.

Fee: $25 for up to 2 entries.

Artwork may be for sale or not for sale, the ceramics department will take a 35% commission on sales.

Awards, minimum of $2000 in prize money.

NCECA will hold its Clay National Biennial Exhibition March 22 to May 30, 2009. The theme is "Ceramic Interface: From Dawn to Digital"

Open to all NCECA members and all ceramic artists 18 and older residing in the U.S.

Fees: $15 for NCECA members, $30 for non-members. Up to 2 submissions with up to 2 views per submission.

Awards: merit and purchase awards totaling $5000.

Functional Porcelain: Deadline: June 2, 2008

The Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL has announced its first annual Lillstreet International

"Lillstreet International is a juried exhibition that addresses contemporary issues in ceramic arts. The show is designed to challenge and showcase the ever changing scope of ceramic art. Lillstreet International is open to all artists working in clay. Each year the show will take on a different theme, this year the focus is functional porcelain."

Size not to exceed 35 inches in any dimension or 30 pounds.
All works must be for sale, the art center will take 40% commission.

Fee: $30 for up to 3 pieces or sets.

Archie Bray Foundation Competition: Deadline Aug 15th

The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana is holding its 1st annual competition called "Beyond the Brickyard" for artists working mainly in ceramics.

Fee: $35 for up to 3 submissions

All items must be for sale, Archie Bray Foundation takes 45% of sale.

Items may not exceed 36" in any dimension. Artists must be 18 or older.

I haven't seen any sort of them for the competition (e.g., functional, sculptural, etc) and their gallery seems to have both.

Professional Skills Artists Workshop

Professional Skills Artist Workshop

Saturday, May 31, 9:30 3:00 at the Art Barn in Salt Lake City

The workshop covers marketing, communication materials (work samples, bio, artist statement, and portfolio), identifying audience, time-management, and organizational strategies.

Limited to 15 artists, this is an opportunity to define and/or refine direction and to connect with other artists. Register early to secure a spot; $50 pre-paid is due by Wednesday, May 28. The workshop is made affordable for artists by a generous grant from the Salt Lake City Arts Council.

Presenter, Tay Haines gained a broad perspective of the artist's world in 19 years at the Utah Arts Council, designing and programming services for Individual Artists and establishing the Utah Artist Endowment Campaign to increase grants and fellowships for artists. A follow-up session will allow for individual review of communication materials and direction.

An artists response to February 08 workshop: I now have a much more concrete idea of how to get my work out there. I feel good about organizing my works, myself and my relationship to the arts community. Terrific job! and later, Thank you so much for the workshop last February and for serving as a reference for me. I just got accepted to show at the City Library for next April/May and am so thrilled. I simply would not have known where to begin to assemble a portfolio and resume, etc., without your workshop. Nor would I have had the self-confidence to even enter my work. I am just so grateful.

Pug Mills

I need to order a Pug Mill for my school program...but I don't have much experience with them and I'm not sure what brand to buy.
I'm looking at de-airing types, and also found one that is a pug mill/mixer in one. That seems cool, but I'm not sure how they hold up over time, if that's really a good thing, etc.

Foundation Center Orientation

The city library has access to the Foundation Center (an online database of private funding foundations).

They will be holding orientations to the Foundation Center on April 4th and May 2nd, 11 to Noon on the 3rd floor of the main library downtown.

When I called about making a reservation, I was told that the reservations were only for the computer classes and that there is no reservation for the orientation. Your mileage may vary.

I will be going to the April 4th orientation and will add more information to this note after that.
