Urinary Tract Infection

Hi All-

I took Boop in to be neutered on Wednesday. She seemed fine, a little groggy on Wed night. She had an accident in our living room and I thought little of it, due to her tramatic day.

The following day, Thanksgiving, she came to my mom's house with us, as I didn't want to leave her alone. She had two more accidents. This I found wierd, as she is fully house trained. I put that down as being in a new environment.

Today, she peed twice in my house and I knew something was not right. Plus she is peeing every ten feet when I walk her (excessive for her!). I called the vet and they told me to bring in a urine sample. That was a task, but I managed and brought both her and the sample into the vet.

It seems she has a "trace" of bacteria in her urine, so they put her on antibiotics (clavamox). I have to give her two doses for the next 14 days. What's really bad is that she is squatting and peeing (usually just drops) as she walks through the house. I'm walking her every hour and she still is leaving drops or urine. I feel so bad for her and am concerned that she will revert to peeing wherever and whenever. I hope the medication kicks in quickly and gives her some relief. She can't control her bladder and I'm a wreck.

Anyone experience anything like this after having your dog spayed? or has anyone's dog had a UTI? Help!!

Joan

Forum: The Clinic

Very sick doggie

Hi all-

I have not posted on here in a long time but now I need help. My little Rosie (15 months) is very sick. Lethargic, can barely walk, collapses when we put her down. not eating much, groans, trembles... We took her to the vet (she was new to the practice- just out of school- not our usual vet) who found nothing in bloodwork or xrays and gave her some anti-inflammatories. They helped a little but now that she is finished with them she is back to the same way.

I happened to connect with an old friend on facebook tonight who is a vet. I told her about Rosie and she immediately said to have her checked out for Addison's disease. I am beside myself at this news because my family dog was put down because of this when I was away at college- (she was about 12 years old).

Has anyone had experience with Addison's? We are taking her back to the vet (our usual vet) first thing in the morning because if she does have it and it's not treated she can die!

Thanks
Claudia

Forum: Japanese Chin Discussion

More on puppy mills

If I was more of a techy I would have given you a link to this story on MSNBC.COM, but at least here's the first paragraph:

After an eight-month investigation, the Humane Society of the United States accused Petland, the national pet store chain, of selling dogs bred under appalling conditions at puppy mills around the country.
What really PO's me is that later in the article Petland said that it is a franchise operation, so they are passing the buck onto each individual store. I'd love to see the franchise agreement.

I know most of you would not buy from a pet store (I did - a stand alone in a pricey suburb near my work) but for those who do don't go to Petland.

Forum: Japanese Chin Discussion

I wonder if any of you could explain something to me. Mittsu has been in our family since 6 months. He's now 21 months old. Since we have had him he is absolutely petrified of the basement. I have taken him down there on several occasions and after clinging and shaking on my shoulder for about five minutes, he's fine. He runs around and explores, happy as can be. He refuses to go down there by himself and STILL shakes when I take him down there with me. (I like to watch TV down there in front of the fireplace). My husband says that its a good thing because thats where the cats go to get away from him... I disagree. Any advice for my nerve raked pumpkin-butt?

Forum: Life With Chin

BeBe's first season!

Well, BeBe was all set for her spay surgery this Friday, but I had my suspicions that she had gone into heat. The vet confirmed this today and unfortunately, they can't operate so I've postponed it until early next yer.

I've only seen a few tiny drops of blood; she keeps herself very clean. But she's really swollen down there and seems a little uncomfortable, licking herself a lot and "scooting" on the cool linoleum in the kitchen. She's also turned into a humping maniac, but hopefully that won't last!

Any advice from other owners of little girls as to how I can make this time more comfortable for her? Fortunately, we don't have many other dogs in the neighbourhood so I can still take her for short walks on a lead. How long should I expect the bleeding to last?

Forum: The Clinic

Time to get another Chin!!

Now that we've moved back home to Chicago, got married and are settled comfortably in our apartment with Hana, we want to get another chin (a male). Does anyone have any recommendations on breeders in Illinois or nearby Illinois? I don't want to get one from the same breeder we got Hana because she needed surgery for her luxating patella at such a young age.

I emailed people about rescues and I check petfinder frequently, but my husband really wants to get a pup from a breeder.

I am sooooooo excited to get another chin!
Here is a pic of Hana... help us find her a brother! :)
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v217/246/23/671840724/n671840724_2496109_2482.jpg

Forum: Japanese Chin Discussion
