Water bottle

Probably kind of odd to be asking this now, but where should a water bottle be positioned in the cage. Should he have to look up to drink or should it be right in front of his mouth, etc.

We were at the county fair this weekend and everybody did it differently! Petey kind of looks up a little when he drinks and he certainly seems to get plenty of water. Now I'm wondering if the poor guy has neck strain from the last 3 years of drinking water looking up. :)

Thanks!
Pasteurella?

My 5 1/2 year old rabbits died three weeks ago of a suspected case of Pasteurella. Chewy showed no obvious signs of illness until the day he died. Tasha lived five days longer, but refused to eat, even though she was on meds from the vet to stimulate her appetite. Tasha had obvious signs of illness, as with a cold. I am heartbroken.

About two weeks before Tasha and Chewy became sick, I found a dead cottontail in front of their pen. I didn't inspect it to see how it died, I just assumed one of our dogs killed it. Could my rabbits have contracted something from the visiting cottontails in our yard?

My rabbits live in covered pens with freedom to go in and out of their hutches, so I am sure they come in contact with more stuff than hutch rabbits. Any suggestions on how I can prevent this tragedy from happening again? I still have two more rabbits that I want to protect.
Not eating

My rabbit Niomi hadn't eaten for 3 days. She is kenneled with her sister Peaches, who has put on weight because she has been eating her sister's food. Yesterday, Niomi seemed depressed and so I rushed her to the emergency vet. She was checked out by two vets and both agreed that she is a healthy rabbit. No blood work or fecals were done. This morning Niomi is just fine, after no treatment. She is eating and full of energy, unlike the last couple of days. This has happened about four times before this year, but this is the first time I took her to see a vet for this problem. Not eating seems to be unrelated to weather. Any ideas on what is going on with Niomi?

Niomi and Peaches live outside in a covered kennel with a hutch. They are free to go in and out of their hutch at anytime, day or night, to play and graze in the grass. Niomi is the dominant rabbit of the two. Both rabbits are spayed.
question about crab apple leaves

Hi there! We give Petey crab apple twigs/leaves on a daily basis, and this particular summer we've had a bad problem with Japanese beetles. I notice a lot of the leaves on the tree have chewed spots from the beetles. Is there any danger of Petey eating leaves that the beetles have laid their eggs on or chewed on?

Thanks a lot.

I was going to put some Advantage on my rabbits to protect them from fleas, but I found a small tick on Chewy's ear. I think Advantage only works for fleas, and will not protect them from ticks. Are there any preventative flea meds that I can use on my rabbits that also works for ticks? I know that Revolution (Selamectin) works, but I need a perscription for that. I am hoping to find one I can just order on-line.

fleece blankets in the cage

Petey loves a fleece blanket on my daughter's bed, and I would love to put a fleece blanket in his cage for these chilly Ohio winter nights, but I'm scared he would ingest it overnight. If he ate some of it, would it hurt him? He's been known to chew things before... ah hem

Introducing a new pet to Mr. Petey

Well...we would eventually like to get a kitten because the kids are begging. I'm not sure if this is wise with having Petey around, not to mention the fact that it is one more thing for me to take care of. LOL

At any rate, I see cute pics of rabbits hanging out with cats, etc., but my fear is that Petey will withdraw and be meaner than he already can be, and that the kitten will grow into a cat that will eat Petey.

So I guess my question is this: If we buy a young kitten and introduce it while it is a baby to Petey, is it likely the two will be ok together or am I inviting trouble?

On occasion when Petey is being very cute; hopping around the room, jumping through his obstacles, etc., I will go to him and try to pet him while telling him how cute he is. Well, he grunts at me! I wonder why this is? Is he in a mind set where he doesn't want to be interrupted while playing or what?
