CHALPA update

Chalfont and Latimer Passenger Action Group (CHALPA) was established in the latter part of 2006 in reaction to Chiltern Railways axing our peak 7-39am train service. The purpose of CHALPA is to help protect our train and underground service from further erosion. Little Chalfont is a village which developed around the arrival of the Metropolitan Railway in late Victorian times. Without doubt, it would be damaging to our community should this key focal point be further undermined.

The good news is that the Passenger Service Requirement should protect us from any further deterioration in service. In summary, the PSR requires:

an early service to arrive at Marylebone no later than 7-30am

in practice, at most 30-35 minutes between services. The requirement is for a maximum 30 minutes gap, but with a national fiddle factor allowed. The formula essentially ensures that the flexing of the timings is not excessive, and where there is a slightly longer gap that this is offset with a slightly shorter gap elsewhere. The formula is such that 35, 25, 37, 24, 30, 28 gaps would be allowed, but 30, 50, 10, 40, 15, 20 would not. The 36 minute gap between the 7-55am and 8-31am services is the longest one we have currently.

two services arriving in Marylebone an hour between 7am and 9pm outside of peak hours

These requirements give Chiltern Railways no room to axe Monday-Friday services further.

As the Met Line infrastructure is improved, we should see better service times (I have noticed my 6-40pm train arrive at C&L a few minutes earlier). I have suggested to Graham Cross from Chiltern Railways that they narrow the wide gap between the two peak morning services. The issue for most Chalfont and Latimer commuters is that the 7-22am train is too early, particularly in the grim winter months, and the 7-55am train means arriving at the office slightly late. Narrowing the 33 minute gap by 5-10 minutes would help ease this immeasurably, there is no other time during the day that the gap is that large. It is obviously a difficult task to juggle the timetable with the Metline, but Graham Cross has said he is hopeful that it will be possible to do something more satisfactory when the Metline new trains and resignalling are completed.

I have posted this on the Little Chalfont Village Society website to encourage those of you interested in maintaining our train and underground service to post on this Message Board your views or convey any important news you might have picked up. Amersham use their Message Board very effectively as a forum for discussing key issues: the huge response to the proposed axing of the 7-35am train service was instrumental in keeping their service, a valuable lesson for us.

Information is the crucial element in winning our cause.

Pay and Display parking

Chiltern District Council are proposing changes to the parking arrangements in the District, including Little Chalfont. If accepted, 'pay & display' parking would take the place of almost all of the present legitimate parking in the centre of the village.

CDC has decided not to proceed with these proposals in Little Chalfont although some on-street charging is likely in Amersham.

Parking in Little Chalfont

Since Tesco Express opened, I have noticed that parking in the service road has become even more difficult. Are there any plans afoot to alleviate the problem? We cannot expect elderly residents to carry heavy bags from Tesco to the car park by the library and there are only two disabled spaces in the service road. One solution might be to reduce the parking limit to one hour or even 30 minutes, but it should be possible to create a few more parking spaces. MichaelB.

Little Chalfont visual impact

Is our village a credit to the community? Could it look better?
Are there broken road signs, overgrown foliage, walls spayed with graffiti and other unsightly concerns?
If so, the Parish Council will do what it can to get these items attended to by whichever body is responsible. The Council is already aware of a number of items that require attention but you can help by posting a reply to this message giving details of any suggestions you have.
Please give an accurate description of the location as well as item itself.

Bell Lane - Proposed development

Many residents in Little Chalfont visited an exhibition recently to view proposals for a large residential development on the old (Ercol) sawmill site.
The outline plans, not yet submitted for planning approval, show 270 dwellings including about 90 'affordable housing' units. A YMCA hostel is included which would house approximately 45 people.
The Village Society is keen to have views from members and others before deciding to whether to support the scheme. Please either use this message board or e-mail secretary@littlechalfont.org.uk with an opinion.

Chiltern Railways

Amersham commuters are jumping with joy that they have persuaded Chiltern Railways to have second thoughts about cutting several peak time trains.
However, passengers from Chalfont & Latimer have received no concession - unless you accept that a new 06.36 departure is a good substitute for the 07.39!

As this affects Chesham and Chorleywood commuters as well as those from Little Chalfont, surely the same amount of noise can be made as Amersham did to save it's trains.

Welcome to the new Message Board.

I had to suspend the old one as it was increasingly being abused by advertisers etc.

This board requires registration which should stop most of the problems. You will not be able to post messages until your account has been approved but normally this will be done within a day or two.

I look forward to seeing messages (including repeats from the previous board) posted by Society members and others on topics which concern Little Chalfont and surrounding district.
