chronic pain

I wrote an email yesterday and I'm wonderingif it got through or
not? In the messege I told everyone that I have diabeties and fibromyalgia,
also have have a bad back; so this leaves me in pain in one way orther
24 hours a day. Tomorrow I am haviing minor surgery on 3 places on my
face. two of them are in my hair which is a first. The basil cell places are
nothing but I get nervous since this is the sixth one I will have removed
from my face.
I have two children (daughter Meg is 41 and she has 3 children, all teens)
also I have my son Stephen who is 39 and isn't married. I lost my husband
in 1998, he is missed by all of us.I hope someone got this messege and
will respond, Sillycat.

Forum: Threads For All Chronic Pain Issues Post Here

Spinal Cord Injury

Brandi here, and here is my story:
August 20, 2000, I fell apx 40-45 ft from a 3rd story roof. My injuries were 5 fractured vertebrae, all fractured differently, my pelvis was broken in 3 places, one clean break through the backside, and 2 stress fractures from the bone shifting from the first break. I also ruptured my spleen, broke a few ribs, burst an ovarian cyst I didn't know I had, and had a concussion. I am alive today strictly by the grace of god that happened to place an off-duty paramedic driving by the scene as the call went out. I was dead when he got there, CPR was administered until Life-Flight arrived and I was flown to the waiting trauma team at the hospital. I flat-lined three times on the way, and had a "near-death experience" during which I was out of body watching from a distance as they frantically went to work bringing me back. My L5 fracture was a burst fracture, and a chunk of bone was compressing my spinal cord to the point that my prognosis for the first three months of recovery was that I would be paralyzed for the rest of my life from the waist down. I personally had no doubt that I'd walk again, which brought in the psychiatrists to help me understand that I was not accepting the "reality" of the severity of my injuries. Phooey! I was unconscious for the first month of my hospitalization, both naturally and induced ( there was a "complication" from a blood pressure med that caused my colon to break down and perforate) Within a couple weeks of waking, I was able to start wiggling my big toes. My pain was controlled at this point with morphine, but as time passed and nerve activity resumed in my legs, the pain increased. After being in the regular hospital for two months, I was transferred to a crappy rehabilitation hospital for an additional 6 weeks. I say crappy because in the month I spent there, they didn't even teach me how to dress myself or bathe being that I was in a wheelchair. I'll never forget the first time I stood up on my own, Brown Eyed Girl was on the radio, and with the help of two PT's, they got me up with my legs straight and let go of me. It was one of the best moments of my life. For pain at that point I was getting 1-2 5mg oxycodone every 4-6 hours, and for the most part it was working. Working with the PT, I gradually made it to the parallel bars, and the day I made it back and forth twice, I signed out of the hospital AMA. They only wanted me another week, but I didn't think I'd get anymore out of it. For a few weeks the pain was stable, and the meds worked. But the more I worked on my legs, the more they came back to life, and man were they angry! This is when the nightmare began and the first thoughts of suicide arose. My dad had been talking to my Dr's and told them that I only wanted out of the hospital because I wanted to go "party" and do drugs, so when I contacted them about the increase in spasticity and pain, they dismissed it. It got so bad that my mom somehow found someone to buy OC's from for me, while I searched for a physiatrist to take this seriously. When I found one, I was completely honest with him about self-medicating, and that I didn't want it to be that way. He was fantastic, very concerned that I get the pain under control, but with medical supervision. He put me on the duragesic patch, and I stopped self-medicating. His help got me through the grueling physical therapy I went through when they finally admitted that yes, apparently I was going to walk. I stayed on the patches for a year or so, then came off with oxycodone and then codeine.
What I live with now is tightened soft tissue in my legs, my tendons behind my knees feel like razor blades they are so tight, because I didn't have the proper help in the early days with stretching-my mom's house was too crazy and the PT wouldn't come. I couldn't start outpatient PT till all my home care stopped, and since I had a catheter and a central line for IV nutrition, that took some time. I am not on any opiate medications, I take Lyrica, which really helps me with the crazy electrical stabbing, burning, racing up and down my legs and the spasms. I exercise a lot, it helps to strengthen muscles so I don't put so much stress on the injured parts of me. Plus the endorphins are good for reducing inflammation. OK, I think that covers it. It's good to be here, and I'll be writing more!

Forum: Threads For All Chronic Pain Issues Post Here

I have a problem in doing much activity for any length of time on the computer. It somehow affects my nervous sytem such as having palpitations, and feeling nerved up. It is very frustrating because I desire to use the computer to make money in some on-line company but at this point in time don't have any solutions. Anyone have similiar problems and importantly, any solutions? Have to sign off as symptoms are increasing.

Forum: Threads For All Chronic Pain Issues Post Here
