A DVD?

What chance of a DVD of the Gillingham Concert then . . . or something similar please.

And at the risk of being accused of calling "The King is Dead! Long Live the King!" are we taking bets on who Pat's replacement is going to be? What an act to follow for whoever it turns out to be!

Peter

John Service

Delighted to see John now playing alongside Chris, who he has followed and admired since we were both pupils at Mainholm Academy, Ayr. Having been part of the band which he formed while we were "educated" there, I have happy memories of playing alongside John, Scott Linden and Mike Daly in the beginning. The "modern" sessions were memorable, in particular "Spasmodic Terminology", "Egg" and "Race to the City".We even recorded a special track (the name escapes me) which was sent to BBC for the weekly broadcast of "Jazz in Britain". It was never aired....I wonder why.
Good to see things have moved on John.
Ah....theres that...

I guess we're all a bit shell-shocked. I've just read all the tributes by band members and friends and it's brought it home what a big thing this is. My eyes have got quite moist.

Obviously Mike Snelling and I were at the same concert . . they were a regular late summer season excitement in Weymouth as I recall.

Can we get the Mac compatibility thing sorted team? I can never open Helge's slide shows.

Peter

The life and times of Ian Wheler is now being broadcast on Trad. Jazz Radio

Dear jazz friends.
The programme I produced called The Life and Times of Ian Wheeler (of the CB band fame!) is now uploaded and running on Trad. Jazz Radio. To listen, for free, go to www.SeanMoyses.com and click on the Trad. Jazz Radio link. The programmes go out randomly so you may hear Ian several times a day if you listen a lot. It will run, along with the other fine music, until the end of the month, when the playlist is refreshed with more great jazz. I'm grateful to John Westwood and Ed Jackson for providing some really rare recordings of Ian.
Greetings all,
Sean Moyses.

Recordings by Pat Halcox

One of the things I want to do on the "Tribute page" I'm currently putting together for Pat is to link to some selected music clips which give a good idea of the range, beauty, and excitement of his playing. There are already a few listed on the "Trumpet page" in the "Instrumentalists" section of the website (http://www.chrisbarber.net/instrs/trumpet.htm) but I want to add more for the tribute page.

This is where you come in: I'd be grateful if people would send me the titles of the tunes they think ought to be included. It would also help if you told me the date of recording and the title of the record/EP/CD (I have over 3000 tracks and something like 300 CDs: I have 40 versions of "Bourbon Street Parade", for example) so I'd like to make sure I get the correct ones.

It would be fun to post the replies here in this thread on the message board so that we can all see what the favourite tracks are, but if you'd prefer to contact me directly, my email address is edjackson@shaw.ca

Thanks.
Ed

Lost and found

Hi Chris , purchased Lost and Found Vol 3 in a shop today and it really was evocative. I was on security, such as it was, for the Richmond jazz festivals, recall you on your back in the grass at 10.00 just for a photo for the press. Standing by the stage and listening to Jimmy Witherspoon remains one of the musical highlights of my life. Others from the same era are the first two Blues festivals at Fairfield Hall, you were MC for one, I think the first with Muddy closing at nearly one in the morning. A couple of years ago I finally got to Clarksdale MS and saw what remains of his shack. This is just a short thank you for championing jazz and blues for so long. I was already listening to Kig Ory, Jelly Roll and Benny Goodman when the trad and skiffle music boom happened and the music has remained a love ever since.
I hope you continue in good health for many more years
John
