Legendary woman wrestler passes away

Penny Banner, considered one of the best working of all the female wrestlers in history, passed away last night in her sleep after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 73.

Banner is the only woman in the St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame. She was also inducted in 2005 to the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in New York.

She gained some mainstream attention in the 50s from dating Elvis Presley. She had a long, stormy marriage with Johnny Weaver, who passed away earlier this year.

Obama leads field in unsolicited campaign songs

Barack Obama is closing in on the Democratic nomination for president, but he clinched the race for the best campaign soundtrack long ago - no superdelegates needed.

John McCain and Hillary Clinton also have plenty of musical support in the first presidential election of the YouTube era. But from will.i.am's star-studded viral hit "Yes We Can" to amateur odes folk to Spanish-language tunes and even a Jamaican reggae tribute, Obama is the leader in what observers are calling a new form of political campaigning.

"Songs about candidates have really taken off," says Steve Grove, head of YouTube.com's news and politics division. "They've found a new way to support their candidates. ... it stretches from regular average voters all the way up to somebody like will.i.am in terms of being kind of like a new, broader trend in political video."

Annie Palovcik is one of those regular people. She penned the prideful folk tune "Illinois Boy" for Obama when he first came to national prominence a few years back - then put it on the Web when Obama became a serious presidential contender this year.

"The concepts of his character and the place of Illinois filtered through my mind into this allegorical country song," said Palovcik, a songwriter and manager of two musicians.

"He is energizing those around him, daring them to look for a new way to dream," she says.

Not that Obama has a lock on musical inspiration. McCain has had songs penned for him, such as "Lead the Way" by a lawyer named Judd Kessler. Clinton has inspired numerous tuneful tributes - no less than Sir Elton John gave her a benefit concert in April - and "Stuck on Huck" was recorded for Mike Huckabee. Even Republican long shot Ron Paul had a song about him that got 60,000 views on YouTube.

Obama has strong support among young people, which may explain some of his Internet music presence. While Grove says there's no specific statistical data to prove it, just on YouTube alone "it seems that (Obama) has really garnered a lot of songs. I think the early success of the Obama girl music video (the song by a scantily clad woman that became a national sensation last year) probably had something to do with that."

Even Dulce Maria Gonzalez, a musician who supports Clinton, notices an Obama imbalance: "When I started to write a song for her, I noticed that there weren't that many on YouTube, and then I saw a lot of them, but they're just not as popular as the Obama songs."

She's hoping her "We Need A Woman" will help reverse the trend. Featuring Gonzalez crooning about Clinton's feminine power, the midtempo tune has garnered about 5,000 views on YouTube (will.i.am's "Yes We Can," in comparison, has gotten more than five million).

"I wanted to do something special for her, and let her know that she did have a Latin vote, and a young vote as well, and give her this song as a gift," said the resident of Brownsville, Texas.

It's not just musicians writing songs to show their support for Obama. Rolling Stone put him on the cover when endorsing him for president, Bruce Springsteen has announced his support, while performers like OK Go and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz have performed for his benefit. Jay-Z has been taking time out on stage during his tour to flash a picture of Obama and tell the audience, "It's time for a change."

"Musicians generally do not like authority, establishment or bureaucracy. Obama is the first candidate in my lifetime, certainly in memory, that represents any kind of new wave of change," said Craig Wedren of the rock group Shudder to Think, which was part of an indie-rock bill, including OK Go, that recently gave a concert for Obama.

It's hard to pinpoint whether the popularity of songs translates into any particular voting surge. will.i.am released "We Are The Ones" a few days before the Ohio and Texas primaries, but Clinton won both states.

But there has been record turnout in many states this year. will.i.am said he specifically used music to support Obama instead of just lending his celebrity because "people are tired of that."

His song "is driven by inspiration and it's creative and it's love, it isn't anything else," he said.

That's what makes the majority of these songs so key, especially for Obama, says Grove.

"The dream scenario, by the way, is what the Obama campaign has basically landed, which is to inspire a group of supporters to do this on their own without any real top-down campaign control," he said.

And if candidates can move the songwriter, they may be able to move the nation as well.

"I keep wondering, if (Obama) is inspiring so much creativity for songwriters," asked Palovcik, "what is he doing for farmers?"

You can call Neil Young the new spiderman.

A biologist has named a newly discovered trapdoor spider after rock star Neil Young: Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi.

The musician is "worthy of that honor" because he's been an activist for social and political issues, said East Carolina University biologist Jason Bond.

Bond, 40, examined the spider in a collection at the American Museum of Natural History in New York where it was identified as a new species that's indigenous to Alabama. He sent students there to collect more specimens.

It's not the first time Bond has bestowed a beloved name on a new spider species. He named one species Stasimopus mendelai after South African civil rights leader Nelson Mandela. The spider Apomastus kristenae is named after his wife, Kristen.

"I've got about 30 new species of trapdoor spiders from California that I have in the queue to put names to and I've got a few people in mind," Bond said. However, he says, "We don't always name things after people."

The 62-year-old Young - whose hits include "Rockin' in the Free World," "Heart of Gold," and Bond's favorite, "Cowgirl in the Sand" - has released more than 30 albums since 1969. His most recent, "Chrome Dreams II," was released last October. Considered one of rock's most influential figures, he was inducted into the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Joel Graves, a spokesman for Neil Young's management company, Lookout Management, said the company had no comment.

Sometimes love isn't all you need. A judge in London granted a preliminary divorce Monday to former Beatle Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. If no one objects, the divorce will be final in six weeks.

Mills, 40, will emerge from the rancorous divorce with a settlement of $47.5 million but a reputation damaged by her televised outbursts against McCartney.

Neither McCartney nor Mills was in court Monday, which might have been a good thing. At the end of a hearing in March, Mills stole the show by emptying a pitcher of water on the head of McCartney's lawyer, Fiona Shackleton.

"Mrs. Shackleton said something under her breath so I cleansed and baptized her," Mills said afterward. "I thought she looked fantastic - I thought it did her the world of good."

Mills will retain custody of the couple's 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice. McCartney will retain the bulk of his fortune, estimated by the court at $880 million.

The split makes McCartney, at age 65, the last of The Beatles to get a divorce.

John Lennon left his first wife, Cynthia, for Yoko Ono. Ringo Starr and his first wife, Maureen, divorced after 10. And George Harrison's marriage to Patti Boyd ended after 11 years.

But McCartney's marriage to the former Linda Eastman endured 19 years, until her death in 1998.

He married Mills, whose left leg was amputated below the knee after a 1993 motorcycle accident, in an Irish castle in 2002. They separated four years later.

Last year, Mills claimed in interviews that McCartney had failed to protect her and their daughter from slander, death threats and other abuse, and she accused the media of persecuting her.

In November, she said she had been "treated worse than a murderer or a pedophile," despite years of work for land mine victims and animal welfare charities.

David Byrne To Turn Building Into Giant Musical Instrument

Ex-Talking Heads frontman David Byrne plans to turn a landmark building in Manhattan into a giant musical instrument.

State officials say Byrne will create a temporary installation in the Great Hall of the Battery Maritime Building, which is next to the Whitehall Ferry Terminal.

The "Playing the Building" installation will include devices attached to ceiling beams, plumbing, electrical conduits and other parts of the structure. Sound will be produced through vibration, making the building function as an instrument.

The installation and a new waiting room for ferry passengers are set to open in late May.

Byrne, 55, has forged a solo career as a musician and visual artist since the New Wave band Talking Heads stopped making records in the 1980s.

NBC has confirmed that SNL's Jimmy Fallon will take over Conan O'Brien's 12:30 am slot when O'Brian moves to 11:30 to replace Jay Leno as host of the " Tonight Show " in 2009 . SNL producer Lorne Micheals will become executive producer of both Fallon's new show as well as "Tonight" when O'Brien takes over . The exact date is still being kept secret because NBC is negotiating to keep Leno at the network . It has been rumoured that ABC is considering Leno to replace the low rated " Nightline " on ABC at 11:30 , which would push Jimmy Kimmel's show back one half hour , and that Fox is considering putting Leno on at 11:00pm , to give him a head start over both O'Brain and CBS's David Letterman . NBC has said . "We love Jay and want to keep him around."

Robert Goulet "Have Yourself A Merry Little Xmas" Original Stereo Mix

Over the past 15 years, I have been compiling a CD version of the 1964 Columbia Record Club box set, A Treasury Of Christmas. When Columbia first released many of their artists' Christmas albums on CD back in the late '80s, they contained the original stereo mixes, and then sometime during the 1990s, most, if not all of these albums were remixed, and these are the CDs that are currently available. I've been able to track down all of the original stereo mix CDs for Ray Conniff, Johnny Mathis, Mitch Miller, Doris Day, etc. but I can't seem to find a CD with the original 1964? stereo mix of Robert Goulet's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." Does anyone know where I can find it?

I'm also missing Jack Jones version of White Christmas. Apparently, his 1990's MCA CD is extremely hard to come by. I've never even seen it listed on Amazon or eBay for any price, and I've been looking for over five years! I'm currently using a version taken from a reel-to-reel that someone sent me.

Old Vinyl and the fuel crisis

To use one of father's favorite expessions , this would be like peeing on a forest fire , but it my undesrtanding that all vinyl used in records is made from crude oil , the same thing they use to make gas , motor oil, and deisel fuel . There have got to be tons of old records , warped , damaged , bombs, major scratchy , broken cracked ,lying around in collections and stores and attics and basements that nobody wants . Maybe we can gather 'em all up and recycle them into crude oil . They recycle your old oil when they change the oil in your car . I know it's just a fantasy , but can you turn old vinyl back into crude oil ?
