harrison Take Down Bow ?????

Any one have experience with the Harrison Take down bow construction?

I have a problem after I built it I cannot string it without it pulling apart.

I Installed a small woodscrew in the bottom limb in the handle (into the male insertion point), to hold it together so I can string up the bow and shoot it. While this does work its not the intension of the product to need a screw.

Does any one know how to fix this problem or what I may have done wrong?

Forum: Bow Crafting

The Bowyer's Journal

Hello everyone! I'm the new owner of The Bowyer's Journal, Tom Colstad. I'd like to provide you with an update regarding the status of the magazine.

After purchasing the magazine business in late August, I discovered that the Bowyer's Journal was not what I was led to believe it was during purchase negotiations - much to my disappointment. The Bowyer's Journal magazine's acquired reputation over the past year or so for publishing late or not at all has driven away many subscribers and most of its advertisers

I intend to continue to publish the magazine but will change its name in an effort to distance it from the previous negative publicity. I also will broaden the scope of the magazine to include topics along the entire spectrum of the traditional archery experience, ranging from crafting bows and other archery equipment to target shooting and tournaments, improving shooting accuracy, archery history, youth programs, stump shooting and hunting adventures. There will be pages set aside for candid photos and associated brief descriptions from 3D shoots, of game harvest, homemade bows and scenes (including traditional archery theme) from hunting adventure landscapes. I hope to include a panel of three "Bow Doctors" (self bow, laminated wood and laminated fiberglass) who will answer readers questions on bow making and bow tuning, etc. I plan to publish results from the major US traditional shoots throughout the year and include photos of the winners. I welcome suggestions from readers on making this a better magazine. The new version of this magazine should be of interest to more people, therefore generating larger subscriber and advertiser bases. I will need the support of the traditional archery community to make this work, however.

I am about done putting together what would have been the Winter 2008 issue of The Bowyer's Journal. Instead of "The Bowyer's Journal," though, I will call the new version of the magazine Traditional Archers' World. It will be published four times per year in March, June, September and December.

The www.bowyersjournal.com Web site will still be operational for a while but will eventually just direct viewers to my new Web site under development, www.tradarchersworld.com. At the new site, viewers will be able to purchase via shopping cart back issues of The Bowyer's Journal and TBJ clothing items, bumper stickers and magazine binders. They also will be able to purchase regular and E-magazine subscriptions to Traditional Archers' World using the shopping cart option.

Forum: Bow Crafting

string length that you prefer?

for a 66" tip to tip or 64" nock to nock laminated longbow, what string length would you choose? i use dacron b50 strings and would like a brace height of 8'' plus. i know you can wind the string to raise the brace height, but i don't like the looks of a bow string thats wound as tight as dental floss. 3 or 4 inches less than the nock to nock dimension? seems i always use a string that is a little long and have to twist it.
what rule of thumb do you use?

Forum: Bow Crafting

Prefered type of bow bench...

Hey Ya'll,

I am going to build me a new bow bench and was wondering what type everyone prefers. What I was considering was either the shaving horse type with the foot pressure arm, or the bench type with the small jaw vise attached to one end.

I have used both (on occasion), and realize some of the pros and cons of each. I am looking for everyone else's impression of how they like one or the other.

Unfortunately i don't have room for both or that would be the solution i would prefer.

Thanks for your comments.

OkKeith

Forum: Bow Crafting

LimbTwist

Ok y'all I have a Tillerin question. While tillerin a Paddle bow, one of the limbs developed a slight Twist in it , about mid-ways. How do I correct it, or can I?
I will try to descibe this as clear as I can. With the Bow on the Tillerin tree, as I draw the limbs down, the Left limb starts to twist, Midways down the limb, the belly of the limb is slightly visible, causing the tip to move towards me, out of alignment.
I figure one side of the limb is stiffer than the other, but if so, which side? I assumed that the high side of the limb twist was the stiffer side and have been taken wood from there, but the twist has not budged. Am I approachin this wrong?
Its only a Red Oak bow, and can make another one easy enough, so ifin I destroy it in the learnin process, it is worth it. I will just put it in the corner with the other lessons! But I do want to learn how to correct this problem, ifin it can be done.

TheWildCat

TheWildCat

Forum: Bow Crafting

Noob Intro and questions.

Good evening, everyone.

As my name indicates, I was once a Bladesmith, forge, anvil and all that. before that, I was a cop,a soldier, and a sailor. (And obviously a glutton for punishment.)

However, a car accident and some failed back surgery in 2005 left me unable to stand at my anvil and forge, much less stand at all, so I've had to give it up.

But the need to craft with my hands is stronger than ever, and I've recently become enamoured of bow making, and hopefully archery in general, both as a means of creating utilitarian beauty and as physical therapy for myself. I'll admit it up front, it was a series of fiction books that got me interested in the bowyer's art, but the more research I did, the more intrigued I became. I intend fully to make a go of this, if it's at all possible.

Up front, I don't hunt, I gave that up after my military days, prior to being injured. I don't oppose sensible, non trophy motivated hunting. I admire those who hunt in the old ways, with the old style weapons, because I believe that it honors the hunt, and the hunted.

I shoot, I fish, when I can, and love the challenge of putting projectile on target.

I hope I've found some kindred spirits here.

Now for my Noob question, which I'm sure has been asked and answered a million times already. Please point me towards those answers, if you would.

What are the least amount of tools required to tun out a good, solid, respectable bow that will last (hopefully), a lifetime, and what are they?

Any and all help is appriciated.

Forum: Bow Crafting

Pa Bow Hunters Need Your Support

Next Thursday October 23rd the PGC Commission is holding a public meeting to get input from both sides on the crossbow issue in Pa. The crossbow manufactures and crossbow groups are pushing to get crossbows introduced into all Archery Seasons. We Pa Bow Hunters are fighting to keep the crossbows out of our seasons. We have been writing letters to the PGC and our legislators, many of us intend to attend this meeting. It would be greatly appreciated if you guys would write a letter to the PGC and add your support for us by asking the PGC Commissioners to keep the crossbows out of our Bow Seasons. If you guys from other states which have crossbows in your seasons could explain any problems or reasons as to why Pa should not allow them, please do so. You can send e-mails to pgccomments@state.pa.us and note to the attention of Carl Roe, Executive Director. And tell them to request that your letter be shared with the members of the PGC Board of Commissioners. Thanks Roy

Forum: Bow Crafting
