Archery Season Frustration & Success!

Our California deer seasons are well under way and in one zone, archery season is already done and the bucks are nearing pre-rut. With an Archery Only tag in my hand, i'm able to hunt much of the state...but with 2 missed shots already this year, i really needed to redeem myself and headed to a 5000 acre ranch that i'd have all to myself.

At 64 yards and dark approaching, i knew this was my buck. In CA, this buck is considered a Pacific Hybrid, a handful of zones in central and southern CA had mule deer introduced there many years ago, some bucks show muley characteristics, while others look like the columbian blacktail. The buck looked all blacktail with his short head and jet black tail.

Applied for my first Elk tag...in PA

Just because I don't live on the West Coast doesn't mean I can't hunt elk...just applied for one of 17 antlered elk tags in Pennsylvania. It's $10 for the application and you get preference points, the odds are really low, but it's close to home so I figure why not?

I don't know exactly what my changes are, but I'm thinking not so great

Looks like I got one to go after. He's coming in during shooting light. Only problem is there's a Sow and 3 cubs that are cleaning up the bait as fast as it gets put out. They're hitting the bait at least twice a day.

The big boy is still hitting this bait at night. He did come in one afternoon about 4:45 but the bait was empty and his pic was a bit blurry but at least there's a chance he will show in daylight.

Field & Stream and Back40??

Take a look at the newest Field & Stream, the September edition, then scroll to the Survival section, think it's on page 37 or so....interesting read on knife wounds while hunting. That story at the beginning kinda sounds familiar, bet that hurt. It actually sounds like a thread we had on here not too long ago.

This deer was hit by River Falls, WI. Thanks to Steiny for sending me the pic. I hunt alot around this area, so hopefully he passed on some of these crazy genes! Sucks that it got hit by a car!!

Bear Trail Cam Pics

It's been a busy summer so I haven't had much time to post anything. My dad and I each drew a wisconsin bear tag permit for this fall. Been baiting for close to a month now. Getting a good amount of bear pics also. Here's a few from the last couple weeks. Season opens the 3rd of Sept so it's coming right up. Can't wait to get back out in the woods hunting again. Well boys hopefully sat. I can get myself my first piggy. Looking forward to a fun hunt and hopefully we can get some good pics and footage. I have been visualizing my shot low and forward that is what I hear is the best shot? Looking at some anatomy photos i would have to agree. Kirk if your reading this where do you shoot your pigs? Now I know why arrowslinger don't like turkey's! high and back on the birds, Low and forward on the hogs he don't want to mix them up.

Almost time to go on the annual trip to the Badlands for some mulies and antelope! Getting real pumped as the time draws closer.

Just got a call from Back 40 team member Chad Baart that he filmed his buddy shoot a 75" antelope Saturday in Idaho. Then the Idaho State archery champion blew a shot at 20 yards on another!! Sorry Chadly, had to do it.

Trev, how was your hunt this past weekend?

Blazers vs. Vantech

I picked up some blazer vanes a few weeks ago and a bitzenburger jig with a right helical and can't get the vanes to adhere to the shaft with both sides of the vane down. I just ditched the helical and am getting a straight clamp so I can try them just using an offset which I hear helps.

Have any of you guys had this problem? I've never had a vane fall off of any arrow when I used an old Arizona EZ Fletch (the vanes were just never exactly 120 degrees apart, lol).

Also, anyone try the Vanetechs that are supposedly identical to the blazers? I hear they're a tiny bit less stiff and the bottom of the vane is rounded like the arrow shaft for better adhesion.
