In need of help for an autism class

Hi, my name is Tabitha. I am a student at Alvernia College, located in Pennsylvania, where I am a dual major in elementary and special education. I am taking a course on autism. As a requirement, I must interact with a person with autism. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to interact with me. This will most likely be a few emails back and forth. Or if you would not like to, is there anyone that you know that would be willing to. I will keep everything confidential. However, I must provide evidence to my professor. I will remove your name from any emails that are exchanged.

Thank you so much!

Hi! I am looking for parents or older students to give me input or discussion about ways to be more helpful to preschool autism students. I am also looking for an alternative to time out for students. How can I best work with a student who is always labeling and avoiding interaction with peers? Bubbles has been a big hit with me to encourage interaction with peers. Do you have any other useful suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Time out?

I have this belief that time out used as a consequence is not appropriate for children with autism. A teacher I work with uses this tecnique often with non-verbal low functioning children with autism as a punishment for acting out: like one is a pincher, they other throws fits anytime he doesn't get his way. I think there is so little going on in the classroom that is positive at times that the ladies just are at a lost of what to do. I have been in the classroom and it is overstimulating for me. The tv is on playing the same tape everyday (it is a way to keep one child at peace) But seriously what is he learning, at the same time the radio is playing, and another child will be screaming, while the finally the last child is flapping around the room. I don't think I could do it everyday.
How should it look?

I am wondering if anyone has insight into how a classroom should look. What areas do you have, how are those areas sectioned off, or are they not sectioned off?

If I were to paint the room, what color(s) should I use? And should each area be a different color?

Do desks or tables work best or should there be both?

Does anyone know of a website that has strategies on how a room should look? Not schedules, routines, etc..
genetics

hi all,
my question may be a bit out of the ordinary but here goes. I have worked with a child with autism for 2 years now and her behaviour overall deteriated toward the end of 2007. nothing we did worked in the end even though we had strategies, visuals, aba, iep in place. what i found out was that her uncle is institutionalised (mental problems) on her fathers side and her mother is manic depressive(bipolar) would this be a mitigating factor towards or incorporated in her autism? in oz we start school tomorrow (feb 4) and her new assistants are not happy about what they witnessed last year (physical and emotional assault) on those who were working with her (myself included) and are dubious about this year. any help would be appreciated.
thanx
karen
