I've gotten some emails from folks regarding the Triple D race... for a race that's say 8 hours (bikes), 5 hours (sky/run)... where would you want that in your training schedule prior to the Arrowhead?

For me I thought the two weeks out was ideal (some have said 3 or more), give me some feedback.

Forum: General Discussions

270 miler?

It would be fun to up the ante a bit for next year? Like for example, have the Bikers start at the finish, ride to the start and then turn around and head her back for a 270 miler? Itz just an idea? It would be a heck of a challenge...of course the logistics would be tough...but I am an "ideas" guy, a theorist
Charlie

Forum: Bike

2008 Year of the skiers

This was a great year for the ski category in the 2008 Arrowhead. A skier just won the Susitna 100 as well.

We had 8 skiers participating and 2 people broke multiple records--Phillipp Finzel of Indiana and local Bria Schurke of Ely, MN. Ron Kadera, Phil Rogers, Jim Reed and Chuck Regenold all performed great as well.

We had a tough group including Alicia Hudleson who skied despite recent ankle surgery and Matt Maxwell the Myrtle Turtle, inexperienced at skiing, but decided to try skiing for the first time instead of riding bike.

We have never received a race report from a skier before, so we would love to hear your ski stories and advice. It is not necessary to finish the Arrowhead to write an interesting report.

Forum: Ski

Sarah Lowell has been competing in the Susitna yesterday/today as part of her Arctic Slam. The weather has been warm and the trail has been slow going and only one skier finished so far, no bikes.

Here is a link to the results page. They finally show that Sarah is back out on the trail after only an hour or so. It looked like she may have stayed there, but there is a time lag on the updates.

http://www.susitna100.com/Results/susitna2008results.htm

Update: Sarah finished in 44h 15 min. Congrats, Sarah!
Forum: Foot Division

Pat White looks fine but keeping his arm immobile. He said he is friends with the Yoga Slackers and they are planning to come back next year.

Dave Gray and others are camping out in the parking lot tonight. I think Dave is really the toughest man :)

Forum: General Discussions

Recommended Reading List

Hello Folks,

I thought a Recommended Reading List might be interesting and helpful to both past and future participants of the Arrowhead.

Here is what I suggest: don't comment on other people's suggestions, but add your own (title and author, plus a comment about why you think it might be helpful).

Plus, this could be a fun way to find out about some good reading.

I'm starting it off with the following:

Secrets of Warmth: For Comfort or Survival by Hal Weiss
This book takes the basic concept of warmth and explains it scientifically as well as conceptually. Great stuff for staying alive and a bit more comfortable.

Lost in the Wild: Danger and Survival in the North Woods by Cary J Griffith
This is a great read. Tells the tales of two seperate instances of guys getting lost on foot in the Boundary Waters Canoe area. Different circumstances in each case, but it lets you see how simple it can be to get lost.

Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales
A look at what is going inside your brain when in a survival situation. Recognizing the internal processes and trying to sort them out could make all the difference in the world.

Forum: General Discussions

CAF Charity

We would like to keep our event small and grass roots feeling, but we would like to figure out a way to get the larger community more involved and raise money for our charity (Challenged Athletes Foundation) or other local charities...maybe the local hospital since it seems to be our new checkpoint this year. :)

We can start in Tower and finish at the International Falls hospital. :)

Any ideas?

Forum: General Discussions

MP3 Players (radios)

I saw a note that MP3 players may be banned in 2009. May I ask what the issue is?

I personally log 12 to 15,000 miles per year on a bike with a radio or MP3 player. To be safer, I keep the volume down and only put the ear bud in the right ear (the left ear is free of the headphone to listen for other traffic such as cars and snow machines).

During my long distance rides, I often listen to weather reports (weather radio) since I live were tornadoes and severe storms pop up with little warning. I also admit to loving music and cycling seems to be one of the few times I can enjoy it without frequent interruptions.

-Spencer
St Joseph, MO

Forum: General Discussions
