Traditionalist order (TA Redemptorists) is ready to return to Rome

We are traditional Catholics. We hold on to the old rite and we don't want to lose any of that."

After false rumours circulated on the internet which suggested the community had already returned to Rome the monks issued a lengthy statement explaining their position.

The document said Pope Benedict XVI's liberalisation of the 1962 form of the Roman Rite with last year's Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum put the order, which is affiliated with the Society of St Pius X, in a position where it must at least consider talks with Rome.

It said: "All these serious considerations, dear friends, move us to go and see what Rome has to say. Let not our contacts with Rome be understood as meaning that we will break off our friendship with the Society of St Pius X and other traditionalist organisations around the world. On the contrary, we positively want with all our hearts to remain in contact sharing all that we may learn with Bishop Fellay and the other heads of traditional orders for the good of tradition as a whole.

"Only time will tell if the moment has come for an agreement with Rome. Prudence requires of us to proceed slowly and cautiously, reflecting well at each step of the discussions."

The Transalpines have come under pressure from certain members of the SSPX, which last month rejected the possibility of a reunion with Rome.

The order recalled three Brothers who were in training at an SSPX seminary after the rector of the seminary took the seminarians aside and suggested they form a break-away community in order to stop an agreement with Rome.

According to the Papa Stronsay blog, the superior, Fr Michael Mary, received an email from the Society which said that Transalpines would no longer be welcome in SSPX seminaries if the order reached an agreement with the Ecclesia Dei commission. "We have no desire to sling mud at people or give a bad name to people but sometimes in order to defend yourself you have to state exactly what happened two or three weeks ago," said Fr Anthony Mary.

Forum: Catholic News, Discussion, History, & Culture

Should I baptize my newborn?

Maybe my question is... Why shouldn't I baptize my newborn?

One week ago I had a baby.

He appears to be in perfect health and is scheduled to be baptized in three weeks. Physically, I am on the road to recovery, although I am not up to going to church yet.

I know that babies used to be baptized very soon after birth but now a one month wait seems pretty standard. No one I know baptizes their babies in the immediate days after birth.

But I'm haunted by the idea that something could happen to baby in the next few weeks. My oldest daughter and I were gazing adoringly at the new baby and she said sweetly, "It's hard to believe that his soul is as dark as his hair.". Gulp.

I know that in cases of imminent death, anyone can baptize... but baby does not seem to be at risk of imminent death. On the other hand, few parents who have lost a baby to SIDS thought that their child was at risk. I can't be sure that my baby is not facing imminent death... none of us can be sure of that, even for ourselves.

So why shouldn't I do the safe thing and just go ahead and baptize him, myself? Would we still go on to have the church ceremony in three weeks? Would the intended Godparents still be Godparents if they're not present at the actual baptism? Would I be sinning in some way if I presumed to go ahead and baptize my child when there is already a church baptism scheduled?

Please be assured that I do intend to ask these questions of my priest. He's out of the office today, so I thought that I'd ask other knowledgeable Catholics... why don't we baptize newborns right away??

Forum: Apologetics and Questions about Traditional Catholicism

I use that downloadable palm pilot feature at Universalis http://www.universalis.com (yes, I am a dedicated Liturgy Of The Hours reciter, but likewise have an interest in learning the "traditional breviary" also, which is why I hang out at fisheaters). I work on a university dairy farm so I'm not at a computer during the day and it's not convenient or often possible to carry around a book, but when I can take a break I can recite the appropriate hour from my palm pilot.

Universalis isn't complete, usually lacking the antiphons, but they do have the saint's biography and the daily Mass readings (which I include in the Office of Readings, or as a short office by itself). Universalis also, at this time, does not have the psalms for Daytime Prayer, but they do have the readings. Using the http://www.kellerbook.com site I constructed a psalm chart in an Excel spreadsheet, which synchs to the palm pilot via Documents To Go. My spreadsheet includes the psalm schema for Liturgy Of The Hours, and both the Pius V and the Pius X breviary. I'd be happy to send this file to anybody who would like a copy. At http://www.olivetree.com one can download bibles and commentaries in palm, pocket pc and smart phone formats. The Douay-Rheims version is free!, so I have that, and recite the daytime psalms from there.

Though not a "traditionalist", I am traditional enough that despite been a techie of sorts, praying from a pda device, cell phone or computer screen just doesnt have the same ambiance as from a book. Likewise, the environment of stopping by the parish church on the way home from work to recite Vespers in front of the Blessed Sacrament is nicer than reading Lauds and the daytime psalms from the palm pilot in a corner of the hay barn . But, the act of praying (especially reciting the daily Office) trumps the format, IMHO, so I thought Id pass these resources on.

In an earlier thread on prayer, there were several references to the Morning Offering prayer, but I dont recall there being any links to the monthly intentions associated with that, so here is a site with these http://apostleshipofprayer.org

Forum: The Divine Office, Ecclesiastical Latin, & Sacred Music

Is modesty in dress absolute or largely relative?

I've always questioned whether modesty in dress was absolute or relative and wondered whether men would be less lustful and distracted in a world where women were covered up and how far this extends. Compare and contract the Muslim world with our western world and it is hard to not draw the conclusion that ones reaction mostly depends what one is used to.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b00b94wq.shtml?src=ip_potpw

a fully covered Yemeni woman goes into a street market and gets "cat calls" and highly suggestive comments thrown at her. I appreciate that these people are Muslims but if modesty in dress DID have the effect of suppressing the ardor of men then why should this happen? They're still humans after all. Taken as an average there is no reason to believe that the average Yemeni man is any less lustful than the average European or American despite the fact that women are locked away for much of the time and covered from head to foot when they are seen in public.

Since this women is showing nothing at all, it clearly can be neither her clothing nor any part of her body which is stimulating this reaction.

Forum: About Women

QUIS! ... VOX! ... LISTEN UP! WE NEED MODS!

I thought I'd make this thread in an effort to convince Quis and Vox, the owners of this fine site, to please give FE some moderators. Obviously, it'd be wonderful to have the both of you back here as regular posters, but your current situations hamper your abilities to effectively moderate your forum.

Because of this I believe the solution would be to choose a handful of regular members as Moderators so as to secure the integrity of this wonderful site. We have been plagued as of recent by an influx of quite vocal and pertinacious sedevacantists and, more alarming, a small "cadre" of atheists. I really haven't the slightest care if an atheist wishes to carouse the forums and engage in genuine, reverent discussions, as I dealt with these meat-heads more times than I can count and truly haven't the time nor the inclination to debate with sock-puppets. However, the line must be drawn as the blasphemies espoused by these adolescents are reprehensible and must not be allowed to persist in their obstinate mockery of our Lord and His Church.

... and so with this, I beseech the two of you to please designate a Moderator(s) to bring back a bit of order to this increasingly anarchic forum. I have enjoyed FE for years and its lively debates with some of the best-and-brightest of the online Trad community and I do not wish to see it subverted or sullied.

PLEASE RESPOND!

God bless,
JRS

Forum: Pig Roast: Mingle and Eat Cooked Pig

Russia expels two U.S. military attachs from Moscow

Russia Expels Two U.S. Military Attaches From Country
By Viola Gienger and Ken Fireman

May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Russia ordered two U.S. military attaches to leave the country, the latest in a series of expulsions by both governments since November.

The ousters follow the U.S. expulsion of a Russian diplomat in November and a second on April 22, about a week after the Russian government ejected an American, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters today. The latest Russian move probably won't prompt a U.S. response, he said.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he viewed the expulsions as ``just the usual tit-for-tat.''

``These things get into kind of a back and forth,'' Gates said during a news conference at the Pentagon today. ``And at some point everybody decides to stop.''

Russia yesterday began a political transition, with Dmitry Medvedev assuming the presidency and former President Vladimir Putin becoming prime minister. Gates, who was a Soviet analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency earlier in his government career, said he didn't think the Russian expulsions were connected to current political events.

Still, ``There are some intriguing developments in Moscow,'' Gates said.

Russia tomorrow celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II with a military parade through Red Square in central Moscow that will be reminiscent of Soviet-era demonstrations of armed might.

Military Parade

``We're going to have the first military parade in 15 years, I guess, tomorrow,'' Gates said. ``And I'm waiting to see if the leadership will be standing atop Lenin's tomb and see if we'll be back to Kremlinology about who's standing in what place and so on.''

During the Cold War, Gates said, ``we devoted enormous effort'' to studying the military hardware on parade and ``looking at who was standing next to whom and who was more heavily bundled up than the next geriatric'' leader atop the Lenin mausoleum in Red Square.

Alexander Rahr, a Russia expert at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, said there may be a connection between the expulsions and the Russian political transition.

``I find it really strange that such a signal comes today, as Medvedev comes into office,'' Rahr said in an interview.

``Either it's an old story that came on the very last day of Putin's era, or maybe it's an attempt by people in Moscow to prevent Medvedev having his own, more positive course versus the U.S. from the beginning,'' Rahr said.

Cold War

``This may be an attempt to keep him in this Cold War way of thinking and Cold War policy, with some hardliners in the Kremlin perhaps thinking that's more appropriate in Russia than a new face of cooperation.''

A Kremlin spokesman said he had no information on the expulsions and referred questions to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The ministry, which previously declined to comment to the state-run news service RIA Novosti, couldn't immediately be reached by Bloomberg News for comment.

In Washington, the press attache at the Russian Embassy to the U.S., Yevgeniy Khorishko, declined to comment.

``We never give any comment on such kinds of issues,'' he said.

``If the Russian government wants to elaborate any further, I'm sure that they will,'' McCormack said.

Russia and Georgia are close to a military conflict.

Believers may be partly responsible for the decline in faith by losing sense of the mystery and treating God as a "fact in the world", he said in a lecture.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor called for more understanding and appreciation between believers and non-believers.

The leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales said that a "hidden God" was active in everyone's life.

The Cardinal's lecture at Westminster Cathedral comes after a spate of public clashes over issues such as stem-cell research, gay adoption and faith schools.

Mystery of God

He expressed concern about the increasing unpopularity of the Christian voice in public life, saying: "Our life together in Britain cannot be a God-free zone and we must not allow Britain to become a world devoid of religious faith and its powerful contribution to the common good." of anti-religious views.

To stem this tide, he said Christians must understand they have something in common with those who do not believe.

God is not a "fact in the world" as though God could be treated as "one thing among other things to be empirically investigated" and affirmed or denied on the "basis of observation", said Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor.

"If Christians really believed in the mystery of God, we would realise that proper talk about God is always difficult, always tentative.

"I want to encourage people of faith to regard those without faith with deep esteem because the hidden God is active in their lives as well as in the lives of those who believe."
