: How are the threads sorted?

By default, the threads are sorted according to last post. When a new thread is created, it automatically appears towards the top of the threads listing. However, if a new reply is posted to a different thread, that thread is "bumped" to the top of the list so that people can see the new reply. This option is called "update to top".

If you have member registration activated on your message board, each member can turn this option on or off through their profile settings. If this option is turned off, threads will be sorted according to the date they were created. New replies will not bump the thread to the top of the list.
